Cabedelo beach is across the estuary from the city, on the Darque side - factor the pedestrian/bike bridge crossing (or the longer drive via the Eiffel Bridge) into your day, especially when hauling kite gear.
August brings the Festa da Agonia crowds - book accommodation well ahead if your trip overlaps with it.
Outside the historic centre this is a small, quiet town - don't expect Tarifa/Cabarete-style beach nightlife, and Porto is too far for a casual night out and back.
