Shamal

08:00 · 11:30 · 12:00 · 14:30

No set hour to plan around. The winter Shamal arrives with the weather system rather than as a daily thermal, and lessons here are booked either in the morning, starting between 08:00 and 11:30, or in the early afternoon, starting between 12:00 and 14:30, with the beach confirmed the day before off the forecast.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Al Wakrah is the easy Gulf session out of Doha, 25 minutes south, on a public beach that turns up in kite directories as Al Arouba or Wakrah Park. Shallow water, sand banks and a road that ends on the sand are the reasons to go.
Winter is the window: December to March is when the windy days stack up, while broader Qatar guidance stretches the season to January-June, or November-July. The wind is Shamal, NW to N when it works, and the modelled monthly averages are modest at 6-11 kt, so this is a spot you check a forecast for rather than turn up at.
Tide decides the sandbank setup and the guidance conflicts: low tide uncovers the benches and leaves a secure shallow area to ride between them, while high tide is named elsewhere with no reason attached. It is a family beach with children, swimmers and football pitches behind it, not a kite station, and no rescue service is documented.
In summer heat comes before wind: June to September reaches 45 C and higher.

Typical strength

Modelled monthly means run about 10-11 knots December to March and drop to 6-8 knots through the summer, with 20-21 days a month over the 12-knot threshold in that winter block and 179 such days across the year. Sessions themselves sit above the monthly mean, but no measured session range is published.

Forecast-dependent, and lighter outside winter. Windy in winter, light in summer, with the modelled windy-day counts peaking December-March.
The season here is winter. January, February, November and December are the named best months, and December-March is the strong block for Al Arouba/Wakrah Park. Qatar-wide the window widens to January-June with a July-August heat break, driven by the Shamal north wind.
Summer Shamal still happens, but June-September temperatures reach 45 C or higher.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Shallow, with riding between sand benches in a secure shallow learning area; also described as shallow with a sandy bottom, shallow and calm overall.

Tides

Tide-sensitive. Low tide is the one to want: it uncovers sand benches and leaves a secure shallow area to ride and learn between them. High tide is named instead in one place with no reason attached, unconfirmed, so low tide is the working read.A 2026 Al Wakrah tide table runs from about -0.3 m minimum to 2.0 m maximum.

Temperature

32.9°C summer · 20.4°C winter

Wetsuit

Qatar Tourism says a wetsuit is only necessary in Qatar from December to February; otherwise boardshorts or light sun protection are typical.

20–35°C water
A Gulf beach with sand banks, not a dedicated kite lagoon. Al Wakra Beach is reported shallow with lots of rocks, while the kite access itself has a sandy bottom. No Al Wakrah-specific current pattern is documented.

Your level

Shallow water, sand banks and a school working the beach make this a fair place to learn, and the low-tide bench setup is secure enough for early progression. It is not a big-air or wave venue.

Rescue

No kite rescue and no lifeguard. Qatar's free public beaches are not guarded and this is one of them, so cover is whoever else is on the water. The national emergency number is 999.

Launch

Public beach and sand-bank access at Al Wakrah, south of Doha. The road runs out onto the beach itself, with soft sand and room to launch and land.

Hazards riders report 11

  • Busy family beach: swimmers and beachgoers close to the launch.
  • Urban/port traffic in the wider area
  • Children and non-kiters in the water on the same shallow banks you ride.
  • The shallow sand banks change with the tide, and guidance disagrees on whether low or high tide is preferred.
  • Rocks are reported in the shallows at Al Wakra Beach, though the kite access itself is described as sandy.
  • No on-site kite rescue is documented, and lifeguards are reported absent at most free public beaches.
  • Heat: the hot season runs June-September and reaches 45 C or higher.
  • Urban coastline beside Al Wakrah and Doha, with beach users, parking areas and wider marine traffic.
  • No lifeguard: free public beaches in Qatar are not guarded, and no on-site kite rescue is documented.
  • Open sea in front of the beach rather than a closed lagoon, so a downwind problem takes you offshore.
  • Urban and port coastline beside Al Wakrah and Doha, with beach users, parking areas and wider marine traffic.
Rules & access
2026: no Al Wakrah-specific kitesurf permit, ban or marked kite zone was found. Check on arrival that kiting is allowed, because local rules change, and talk to the locals before you go on the water.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the tide as well as the wind before you drive down: low tide opens the sand banks, though other advice names high tide.
  • Ask a local school or rider which access to use, because the Al Wakrah shoreline runs long and the safe wind angle depends on where you put in.
  • Give the families room; this is a family beach with children in the shallow water near you.
  • Walk the shallows or wear booties first, since rocks are reported at Al Wakra Beach.
  • Skip the middle of the day in summer: June-September reaches 45 C or higher.
