When it fills in

On the fair-weather days that make up most of the summer, the working wind is a west to south-west thermal that comes in around the middle of the day and holds until after sunset, in the 12-18 kt band typical of this stretch of the Riviera di Ponente. Synoptic days - Libeccio, Grecale, Levante, Tramontana - run to their own timetable and can blow at any hour. Regional pattern, not an Albenga measurement.

Albenga rides off the free beach at the mouth of the Centa, the practical launch for kite, wingfoil and windsurf on this part of the Riviera di Ponente. The river mouth gives you a choice inside one session: flatter water near the estuary, chop outside it, waves on the right synoptic day.
Libeccio, Scirocco, Grecale, Levante and Tramontana all get used, but Tramontana is the one to respect, gusty and turbulent off the inland mountains and side-off enough to push a rider out. With Libeccio there is an insidious shore break and offshore waves that reach 2-3 m.
Beginners should go somewhere else; intermediate is the minimum level here, and the bottom is sand mixed with gravel and pebbles. In summer the beach establishments hold the other beaches, so kites use the Centa mouth alongside the swimmers.
No 2026 kite corridor for that free beach shows up in public records and no local rescue arrangement was found, so verify the rules on the sand before rigging.

Typical strength

10-20 kt is the usual working range, with the spot still rideable through 20-40 kt on synoptic days and peaks of about 40 kt described locally. The summer thermal sits in the 12-18 kt band.

Everything depends on the direction. Grecale and Levante are the cleaner ones. Libeccio builds shore break and irregular waves, and Tramontana arrives gusty and turbulent off the inland mountains.
In summer kites launch from the Centa river-mouth beach because the other beaches are occupied by establishments; winter or Tramontana sessions may move to the beaches farther north near LNI. The summer working wind is the west to south-west thermal of the Ponente coast, roughly April to October on fair-weather days, while the synoptic winds are spread through the year.
High waves are put at about 60 days a year. No reliable month-by-month wind season was found.

The quiver, in words

No published local quiver. The spot is described as working from 10-20 kt and holding through 20-40 kt, which for a 75-85 kg rider puts you on 11-12 m at the bottom of the range, 9 m around 18-20 kt, 7 m from the mid-20s and 5-6 m on a full Libeccio or Tramontana day. Indicative from the quoted wind range, not from local rider experience.

Direction to shore

At the south-facing river-mouth beach, SW and SE are side-shore; NE can be side-on on the east-facing town coast; Tramontana/N can be side to side-off and gusty.

Dominant direction

SW to SE work side-shore on the south-facing river-mouth beach; N and NE, W and SW also come up in local descriptions of the coast.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

sea and river mouth

Standing depth

Standing depth at both high and low tide, with shallow flat water inside and immediately beside the river mouth and chop or waves once you are outside it. No measured depth profile was found, and the bottom is sand mixed with gravel, so a river-mouth bar shifts with the Centa's flow.

Tides

Both high- and low-tide navigation are described as possible. No major tide dependency was found.

Temperature

24°C summer · 14.6°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer: shorty or no full suit depending on wind chill; winter: full wetsuit. Published Albenga sea-temperature summaries put summer average around 24 C and winter around 14-15 C.

Currents

Currents can be stronger at the Centa river mouth, especially during significant river flow.

Rescue

No dedicated kite rescue. Under the 2026 Loano-Albenga bathing-safety ordinance, staffed beach concessions and, where they run a lifeguard service, the comune on free beaches must provide rescue cover during the official bathing season (third week of May to third week of September); the national coast-guard emergency line 1530 covers the whole maritime district at any time.
Outside supervised beach hours or areas, no organized rescue is guaranteed for independent kitesurfers.

Launch

Kites generally launch in summer from the free beach at the Centa river mouth, while windsurf can also use beaches to the north outside peak beach-establishment occupation. Parking is available near Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo and Lungocenta Croce Bianca.

Hazards riders report 11

  • Currents at the Centa river mouth.
  • Shore break.
  • Sand and pebble bottom.
  • Swimmers in summer.
  • North wind can be side-off and gusty.
  • Shore break, especially with Libeccio, reaching about 1 m in those conditions.
  • Waves offshore can reach 2-3 m with Libeccio and may be irregular.
  • Sand mixed with gravel/pebbles on beach and bottom.
  • Swimmers and summer beach crowding.
  • Tramontana/N wind can be gusty, turbulent and side-off, with risk of being pushed offshore.
  • Pedestrians and limited rigging space near promenade/parking areas if launching outside the river-mouth beach.
Rules & access
2026: Ufficio Circondariale Marittimo di Loano-Albenga Ordinanza di sicurezza balneare n. 43/2026 (in force from 9 May 2026) covers the whole Loano-Albenga maritime district, including Albenga, and sets the 2026 bathing season from the third week of May to the third week of September. Within 1 May-30 September, a 200 m swimming-reserved zone runs off every beach, and kitesurf and windsurf can cross it only through authorized transit corridors at least 10 m wide, laid perpendicular to the shore and marked with yellow buoys; opening a corridor needs a municipal permit held by whoever is authorized to use that stretch of shoreline for sailing sports, kitesurf included. No corridor specific to the Centa river-mouth free beach was found in public records, so the customary free-beach launch there is not confirmed as an officially marked transit corridor.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Launch from the Centa river-mouth free beach in summer; the other beaches are taken by establishments and no alternative legal launch is confirmed.
  • Do not read flat water as an easy day in Tramontana: it is gusty and side-off.
  • In Libeccio, look at the shore break before you launch and pick your exit first.
  • Wear water shoes; the beach and the bottom are sand mixed with gravel and pebbles.
  • Park near Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo or Lungocenta Croce Bianca.
  • When the wind angle at Albenga is marginal, drive to Andora or Imperia instead.
  • A 9 and a 12 cover the ordinary days; add a 7 if Libeccio is in the forecast.
  • The summer thermal is a lunchtime-onwards wind. Rig early only when a synoptic front is due.
  • There is no kite rescue here. Save 1530 for the coast guard and 112, and remember that lifeguard cover on the free beach only runs inside the official bathing season.
