Andora, or Marina di Andora on the signs, sits on the Riviera di Ponente, and its one real asset is the Capo Mimosa thermal: around 15 knots in spring or summer on days when the rest of Liguria is flat.
The usable wind is SW-W, side-onshore to onshore from the right into the south-facing bay, and it comes under two names, Ponente on the ordinary thermal days and Libeccio when a low-pressure front arrives. Those fronts turn the sandy beach into a wave spot; strong wind, stormy sea, and not a beginner's afternoon.
Normal days are clean water over sand, flat to chop, with small waves that grow to medium as the wind builds. A beginner is fine here with a school and not on their own in August: the summer public corridor by L'Ultima Spiaggia, at the western end of the promenade, is the customary way through the bathing zone, and rigging on the public gardens gets you a fine from the local police.
Water runs 25.3 C in summer and 12.5 C in winter, so a shorty covers the middle of the year and a full suit covers the rest. March to October is the window.

Typical strength

about 15 knots in the Capo Mimosa thermal; fronts can be much stronger

Reliable by Ligurian standards whenever the Capo Mimosa thermal works. In a Libeccio front it turns strong and stormy, and the session becomes a wave session.
March through October is the window, with the SW-W thermal working across those months and reportedly around 100 usable days a year. Winter and spring low-pressure Libeccio can be strong and stormy, with waves to about 2 m and gusts reported to force 9. No monthly wind statistics are published for Andora itself.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider: 11-12 m on the ordinary Capo Mimosa thermal day of about 15 kt, 9 m once it pushes into the high teens, 7-8 m in a Libeccio front. Indicative, worked back from the wind figures — no local size log exists.

Direction to shore

Side-onshore to onshore from the right into the south-facing Andora bay. The exact angle changes along the bay and is unconfirmed.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

No shallow standing flat. This is an open sea beach over sand, nothing like a lagoon, and no depth profile has been published for any point along the bay. With no tide, the depth you find on arrival is the depth all day.

Tides

Marina di Andora is tide independent. Detailed local tide notes are unconfirmed.

Temperature

25.3°C summer · 12.5°C winter

Wetsuit

Rash vest or shorty in the warm summer water; a full wetsuit in winter and through the shoulder seasons.

14–27°C water
Clean water over a sandy beach and a sandy seabed. Flat to chop most days, small waves in normal wind, medium waves once it blows harder.

The bay works for beginners as much as for expert and pro riders, but a beginner needs instruction first. The beach is broad enough to make kite handling look easier than it is.

Rescue

Recovery and rescue appear among the spot services; the closest thing on the ground is the rubber boat that runs lifts and lessons out of Andora port in summer under easterly or northerly winds, through Surfing Park Andora. Whether independent riders can use it, and on what hours and conditions, is unconfirmed.

Rules & access
2026: Andora is one of the seven comuni (with Loano, Borghetto Santo Spirito, Ceriale, Albenga, Alassio, Laigueglia) covered by the Ufficio Circondariale Marittimo di Loano-Albenga's Ordinanza di sicurezza balneare n. 43/2026, in force from 9 May 2026, with the 2026 bathing season running from the third week of May to the third week of September. Kitesurf and windsurf riders holding a shoreline-occupation permit must install and use an authorized transit corridor at least 10 m wide to cross the 200 m swimming-reserved zone. The summer public corridor by L'Ultima Spiaggia, at the western end of the Andora promenade, is the customary kite launch point, and rigging in the public gardens is fined by local police.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check Andora even when the rest of the Ligurian forecast looks marginal: the Capo Mimosa thermal can add usable wind.
  • Rig on the sand, never on the public gardens, where local police issue fines.
  • Use the summer corridor by L'Ultima Spiaggia at the western end of the Andora promenade.
  • Treat a strong Libeccio day as a wave and storm session, not a normal freeride.
  • Call Surfing Park Andora or a local club to confirm this season's corridor and boat recovery before a first session.
