When it fills in

No thermal clock. The wind here comes with fronts, not with the sun, so it can be in at any hour and can shift or drop through the day. Decide on the forecast and on live readings, not on a time.

Stegen is the north end of the Ammersee, by the ferry pier at Inning, and it is the easy-access alternative to Herrschinger Kreuz: a gravel beach, grass to rig on, a big paid car park at the pier, and in front of you the largest standing-depth area on the lake before the bottom drops away. The catch is the wind.
Stegen wants south to southwest, side-on; west works some days with wind shadow along the shore, and on any given front it is gustier and weaker than Herrsching, so people here are often still waiting while the cross is already riding.
It is not a beginner spot despite the shallows: you have to edge upwind off a busy shore into open water, and in bathing season (busy May to September; the exact dates are unconfirmed) the shallow area is a swimming lawn you stay out of, board-dragging or walking to its edge before you ride.
Watch the landing stage and the ferry, the sailboats anchored south of the entry from spring to autumn, the stones near shore, the trees. Water is 21-24 C in summer and 3.5-6 C in winter. Stegen is sometimes left off the Ammersee kite list altogether in favour of Herrschinger Kreuz and Eching, which tells you how conditional it is.

Character

synoptic

fills in: No thermal clock. The wind here comes with fronts, not with the sun, so it can be in at any hour and can shift or drop through the day. Decide on the forecast and on live readings, not on a time.

Typical strength

Not a steady band. Days that swing from 2 to 7 Bft, roughly 5 to 30 knots, in the same afternoon are normal here; the good days are a fairly constant Bft 6, about 22-27 knots. There is no measuring station at the spot itself, so the numbers riders quote come from stations 5-9 km away and from what they have felt on the water.

Very gusty and weaker than Herrschinger Kreuz, with wind holes and shadow along the shore.
Ammersee is a front-driven lake and works best in west-sector wind. Stegen wants south to southwest, which gives good side-onshore riding; west can still work, but with shadow near the shore, and in any direction the wind here is gustier and weaker than in Herrschinger Bucht.
It is normal to be still waiting at Stegen when Herrschinger Kreuz is already rideable.

front-driven inland lake wind

The quiver, in words

No local size guidance is published for Stegen; the following is indicative for a 75-85 kg rider. Around 9 m on the constant Bft 6 days (22-27 knots), 12 m when it sits at 12-16 knots. On the swing days rig for the gusts rather than the lulls: the top of the range is 7 Bft and the bottom is unrideable anyway, and you are edging upwind off a shore with trees and buildings on it.

Direction to shore

Side-onshore in SW; also described as onshore at the spot.

Dominant direction

S to SW, with W on some days; the wider fan from SW through WSW, W, WNW to NW is what appears on paper.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

lake

Standing depth

The largest standing-depth area on the Ammersee. Sand has built up to the point that the waist-deep zone now runs up to about 200 m offshore before the bottom drops away. Gravel and stones at the entry, soft sand once you are out.

Tides

none; freshwater lake

Temperature

21-24°C summer · 3.5-6°C winter

Wetsuit

Wetsuit except on warm summer days; cold-water gear in spring, autumn, winter. Surf shoes: there are stones in the shallows near shore.

Currents

No current. Wind drift and cold water are the real risks.

Shallow and flat in the front section, chop and small wind waves further out on a stormy day. Gravel at the entry, softer sand once you are offshore. The wind has shadow along the shore and is gustier and weaker than in Herrschinger Bucht.

Your level

Not for beginners: you have to edge upwind off the shore into open water in gusty wind. Intermediate and up, with advanced the safer label.

The scene

What riders come here for

freeridewingfoilcold-water standing-depth sessionssouthwest-front sessions
A shared lakefront: bathers on the lawn, windsurfers and wingfoilers and kiters on the water, the ferry next door. Less of a kite spot than Herrschinger Kreuz, and it stays usable only as long as everyone behaves.

Rescue

No kite rescue and no lifeguard watching the water. For a lost board or a kite you had to release, call the water rescue station on 08152 969809, which is not an emergency line, or 112 if someone is in trouble.
If you are the one being searched for, stay where you are and stay reachable; a search costs you nothing unless you set off a false alarm deliberately. Write your name and phone number on board and kite in permanent marker so found gear does not start a search at all.

Launch

Gravel beach and grass at the north end of the Ammersee, with plenty of room to set up. It is a bathing lawn first; keep the launch and landing strip clear and work upwind away from the shore as soon as you are up.

Rules & access
2026: no kiting in the shore and standing-depth area while bathing is on; keep the start and landing zone clear, landing kites have priority, and when the swimmers are in, board-drag or walk to the edge of the shallows and ride outside them. Foilers stay out of the swimming zone to protect the front wing and the mast as much as the bathers. The wind arrives onshore, so work upwind away from the shore. From 1 November to 31 March a voluntary Ammersee agreement asks watersports to stay off the lake for wintering and migrating birds. Parking at the pier is metered, paid at the machine or by app, and it is checked regularly. No municipal kite ordinance specific to Stegen exists for 2026, and no signed bathing-season dates were found for the launch itself.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Look at the Herrschinger Kreuz readings before you commit to Stegen; the cross is often riding while Stegen is still waiting.
  • In bathing season board-drag or walk to the edge of the shallows and ride outside them; the standing-depth area is the swimming lawn.
  • Keep the start and landing strip open; the shore is shared and landing kites have priority.
  • Come for south to southwest. In west expect wind shadow along the shore; for anything else go to another Ammersee spot or another lake.
  • Stay clear of the landing stage, the ferry line and the sailboats anchored south of the entry from spring to autumn.
  • Park in the big paid lot at the pier, Landsberger Str. 81, or along Landsberger Strasse in Inning; from Munich Airport it is about 40 minutes by car.
  • Write your name and phone number on the board and the kite. A stray board on the Ammersee starts a search unless someone can call you.
  • Rig for the gusts. A day that runs 2 to 7 Bft is a normal day here, and the shore behind you is trees and buildings.

FAQ

Is Stegen suitable for beginners?

No, the spot requires riders to work upwind into open water, and independent beginners are not recommended even though the shallow front section is the largest standing-depth area on Ammersee.

What is the wind like at Stegen?

South to southwest wind works best, but it arrives noticeably gustier and weaker here than at Ammersee's Herrschinger Kreuz, with wind shadow near shore.

Are there rules to follow?

Kiting is not allowed in the shore/standing-depth area while it is used for bathing, and landing kites always have priority in the shared launch zone.

What are the main hazards?

Ferry traffic and the Stegen landing stage, anchored sailboats from spring to autumn, and nearshore stones near the shallow entry.
