When it fills in

Trade-driven, so it can be blowing at any hour rather than switching on at a set time. Mornings tend to be the calmer part of the day and the wind commonly builds through the afternoon, but it varies day to day and no onset pattern is measured here.

Bel Ombre is a working kite spot on the south-west coast of Mauritius, with KiteGlobing running out of C Beach Club directly onto the lagoon. Inside the reef the water is flat to lightly choppy with a big shallow standing area, but coral patches mean boots and a tide plan. Southeast to south trade wind is the good setup.
Easterly days can save a trip when Le Morne is too offshore, though the launch gets gustier the further east the wind swings. High tide is the safe call, because low water brings reef and coral close to the surface.
Confident freeriders get open lagoon space; the reef waves and the channels are for riders with local knowledge or a boat behind them. It is quieter and more resort-based than Le Morne, which buys you less crowd pressure and costs you more swimming zones and beach users to keep clear of.

Typical strength

Usually side-onshore. South and southeast are the stronger, better days; easterly wind works here when Le Morne has gone too offshore and east, but it is gustier, above all at the launch.
The Mauritius south-coast kite season runs April to November. For Bel Ombre the best window is given as June to October, with May to November as the broader season; April, May, October and November are shoulder months, and December to March is less reliable with cyclone-season weather risk.

The quiver, in words

No spot table is published, so these are indicative sizes off the usual 15-25 kt. A 75-85 kg rider covers June to October on a 9 m and a 12 m, drops to 7 m on the strong south days and wants something near 14 m for a light shoulder-month morning.A south day generally asks for a size up on a southeast day at the same forecast reading.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

Standing depth

A large shallow standing area, reportedly about 700 m x 300 m: the first 30 m is sand, then sea grass and shallow water, then coral patches around 100-150 m from shore.

Tides

High tide is the recommendation. Low tide exposes reef and coral close to the surface, and accounts differ: some say the tide barely matters inside the lagoon, others that low water rules out the marked coral and the outer reef.

Temperature

28°C summer · 24°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts/rash vest are generally enough year-round; a shorty can be useful in winter or for long windy sessions.

Currents

Strong currents can occur in the reef channels and, in high tide plus big swell, a downwind current can run inside the lagoon.

25–28°C water
Reef-protected lagoon, flat to lightly choppy inside, with wave riding beyond the reef for experienced riders. Coral patches sit inside the lagoon and boots come recommended again and again. The outer reef and the channels need local knowledge or boat support.
Depending on tide and swell the water runs shallow and flat, choppy, or small to medium wave.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginner suitability means lessons or accompanied riding in the shallow lagoon with school or boat support. On your own, treat it as demanding: the launch wind can be gusty, coral is present, high tide is preferred, and the reef and channels are a long way from shore.
Intermediates freeride and freestyle in the lagoon; advanced riders take the reef waves and the Bel Ombre to Le Morne downwinder.

Quieter than Le Morne, built around the resort and the beach club, with school support and enough lagoon for everyone on a normal day; holiday months put more people on the sand.

Rescue

KiteGlobing at C Beach Club runs a safety boat, storage and launch and landing help, and covers its own students and guests. There is no public lifeguard and no independent rescue on this beach: a rider not signed in with the centre has no cover, and anything past the lagoon wants a support boat of its own. The reef is a long way out and lightly watched.

Launch

Sandy beach and lagoon launch by the Bel Ombre public beach and the C Beach Club/KiteGlobing centre. The beach is long and narrow, with a marked launch by the centre and swimmer and resort zones to keep off; when easterly wind makes the sand gusty, walk 10-20 m toward the lagoon before you water-start.

Hazards riders report 11

  • gusty wind near the shoreline
  • Gusty wind at the beach/launch, especially in easterly wind
  • Coral patches inside the lagoon; boots recommended
  • Reef comes close to the surface at low tide
  • Strong currents in reef channels
  • Downwind current in the lagoon during high tide with big swell
  • Outer reef and distant channels are not recommended without local knowledge or support
  • Trees and other beach users near the launch
  • Swimming/resort zones near the marked launch areas
  • Shells, stones and sea grass on the lagoon bottom
  • No public lifeguard or independent rescue on the beach
Rules & access
2026: no Bel Ombre-specific rider permit or seasonal kitesurf restriction is published, and nothing is posted at the beach; the launch areas are marked near the centre and the resort swimming areas are to be avoided. The current Beach Authority Act gives the Beach Authority power to regulate activities on public beaches, and the Tourism Authority lists kite surf under its rental agency and Pleasure Craft Licence checklists for commercial operators.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the tide before you commit; high tide is the consistent recommendation here.
  • Wear booties: past the sandy first stretch it is sea grass, shallow bottom and coral patches.
  • Do not go out to the reef or the channels alone; take KiteGlobing or other local support if you leave the lagoon.
  • On easterly wind, expect a gusty beach launch and walk 10-20 m toward the lagoon before you ride.
  • Use Bel Ombre when Le Morne has gone too easterly, or when you want a quieter freeride session.
  • Keep off the marked swimming and resort zones around the beach club launch.
  • Rig a size up on a south day compared with a southeast day at the same forecast reading.
  • If you have the choice, take the afternoon. Mornings here are more often the calm half of the day.
