The spot

Boca Paila is a remote kite spot at the lagoon outlet and bridge inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, south of Tulum. The ridable zone is on the Caribbean side, where a small shallow flat area forms by the sandbank and waves show up farther out toward the reef when it blows. The lagoon and the river mouth are off limits: crocodiles are reported there, and the reserve puts habitat and wildlife ahead of your session.

Wind and access

Wind follows the Tulum season, roughly November to April or May, and the honest local numbers are moderate, commonly around 10-22 or 12-20 knots rather than the 20-28 knots you sometimes see quoted. Getting there is part of the risk. Past the Sian Ka'an gate the road turns unpaved, potholed and sometimes flooded, and it is slow in anything low. There is no kite rescue, so this suits self-sufficient intermediate and advanced riders, guided excursions and downwinders, and nobody who is still learning.

Bring big: 10-14 m is what the spot asks for, with 12 m the everyday size, because the wind here is moderate rather than strong. A 9 m covers the winter Norte days that run 20-30 knots and over. Anything smaller rarely comes out of the bag.

The flat patch forms where the lagoon outlet meets the sea, roughly 300 square metres of it, and the water there does not come above hip height. Past that patch the depth and the bottom are undocumented.

Drive south from the Tulum beach zone into Sian Ka'an, past the reserve gate and on for about 14 km of dirt road, to the Boca Paila bridge and outlet, then take the short narrow jungle path to the sea-side beach and sandbank. Do not launch or ride in the river or lagoon water under or behind the bridge.

2026: Sian Ka'an is a CONANP-managed federal biosphere reserve. Visitors pay the CONANP conservation entry fee, about $225 MXN (2026), stay on the marked roads, trails and navigation areas, follow ANP staff and guide instructions, leave wildlife, flora and coral alone, carry out their trash, use biodegradable sun protection, and use authorized local operators where reserve access is regulated.

Kite-specific rules

No kite-specific Boca Paila permit, launch zone map or seasonal kite restriction was found: the reserve's published management programme sets permitted and prohibited activities for fishing, research, environmental education, low-impact tourism and vessel transit, and does not mention kitesurfing, windsurfing or water sports at all.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

Ride the sea side only and keep away from the river and lagoon mouth because of the crocodile reports.
Pack bigger kites than you would for a windy destination: 10-13 m is the range that comes up for Tulum and Boca Paila.
Go with a local school or guide the first time; the access, the conservation zones and the lack of help are not obvious when you arrive.
Carry water, shade, repair basics and a way to call someone. Services stop at the reserve gate.
Use biodegradable sun protection or cover up, and keep off the coral, the mangroves and the wildlife.
Line up wind and tide timing at Boca Paila before you commit to the outlet area.
Do not count on public transport for the Boca Paila road in 2026; rent a vehicle with clearance or join an organized trip.
The flat patch by the outlet is small, about 300 square metres, and hip deep. It is a session, not a day.

Route

Drive from Cancun or Tulum onto the Tulum hotel-zone coastal road, pass the Sian Ka'an entrance, then continue south on the unpaved Tulum-Punta Allen/Boca Paila road to the Boca Paila bridge. Public colectivos to Punta Allen were unavailable in 2026, and the reserve road is slow, potholed and worse after rain.

Transfer

About 135-180 minutes by car from Cancun airport in normal conditions, adding the rough-road section to the usual Cancun-Tulum run; from the reserve and hotel-zone end at Tulum it is roughly 40-45 minutes depending on road condition.
