When it fills in

No thermal cycle to time. Wind arrives with fronts and pressure systems and can blow at any hour, so the forecast decides the day rather than the clock. Summer highs sitting to the east are what deliver the steadier easterlies.

Allmannsdorf is the kite launch on the north shore at the east end of Groesser Brombachsee, next to the dam near Pleinfeld. Park in the paid lot by the dam and carry the gear 200-300 m to a broad sand shore.
The lake runs east to west, long enough for either end of the compass to build usable freeride water, flat to choppy, with more wind wave once a west wind has the full length of it.
West arrives sideshore from the right and clean, and it also puts the dam about 100 m downwind in the lee: if you cannot hold ground, stay on the beach. Northwest sits in the wind shadow and is gusty enough to spoil the day.
East wind is ridden here too, and the guidance on directions contradicts itself, so ask on the day rather than trusting one line. The shore drops away steeply and the standing-depth area is tiny, which rules out learning on your own; progressing riders, freeriders and foilers are who this suits.
On sunny east-wind days the beach fills with bathers, and the passenger steamer works the lake all season.

Character

synoptic

fills in: No thermal cycle to time. Wind arrives with fronts and pressure systems and can blow at any hour, so the forecast decides the day rather than the clock. Summer highs sitting to the east are what deliver the steadier easterlies.

Typical strength

Light and gusty. Most rideable days sit at 2-3 Bft, roughly 7-12 kt; a good one reaches 4 Bft, about 11-16 kt, and the strong frontal days gust to 6 Bft. Around 30 kiteable days a year is the honest count, and only for someone who can go at short notice. Nothing measures wind at Allmannsdorf itself; the closest on-lake record, a station at Ramsberg on the south shore that ran from September 2017 to January 2020, averaged 5 kt with gusts of 6 kt and stopped reporting.

Inland synoptic wind. W and SW arrive cleanly at Allmannsdorf, NW is very gusty because of the wind shadow, and E setups are usable. SW is elsewhere rated only partly suitable, and that contradiction is unresolved.
Wind here is weather-system driven. Inland German wind is often weak, with the stronger days arriving around Atlantic lows and the occasional stable east wind in a high-pressure spell.

The quiver, in words

No local size guidance is published. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider on this lake: 15-17 m or a light-wind foil kite on the usual 7-12 kt, 12-13 m on a 4 Bft day, 9-10 m on the rare strong front. Gusts run far above the mean, so pick the size that gets you moving in the lull.

Direction to shore

W is sideshore from the right at the Allmannsdorf dam-side launch; E is also described as usable by Spotnetz/Pleinfeld; NW is wind-shadowed and gusty.

Dominant direction

W, WSW and SW are the directions usually given for Allmannsdorf, while east wind is also rated especially good on this north shore. The two claims conflict and neither is settled.

modelled

A weather model covers this place, but its figures do not sit with the wind strength this record states, so no season is drawn from them. They are in the table above, and no riding season is on record either.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month.

Standing depth

Limited. The shore falls away steeply and the standing-depth area is tiny.

Tides

None; inland reservoir.

Temperature

Summer Brombachsee was 19 C on 26 Aug 2026; high-summer averages generally run around 23-24 C with possible maxima up to 27 C.

Winter 2-4°C

Wetsuit

Summer shorty or thin full suit depending on wind chill; spring/autumn full suit; winter cold-water gear. Exact local kite wetsuit guidance was not found.

Currents

No tidal current, and nothing confirms a significant lake current at Allmannsdorf.

Large reservoir on an east-west axis. Flat to choppy freeride water, with more wind wave once a west wind runs down the lake.

Your level

Brombachsee is a spot for progressing riders, freeriders and foilers. Raw beginners are wrong here: the shore drops steeply and the standing-depth area is very small. Local schools teach kite, so start with a lesson rather than alone.

Hazards riders report 10

  • passenger ferry traffic
  • limited space in the shore zone
  • gusty NW wind due to wind shadow
  • Dam close downwind in west wind: about 100 m in the lee for riders who cannot hold ground.
  • Passenger ferry/steamer traffic on Groesser Brombachsee.
  • NW wind shadow and gusts.
  • Limited standing-depth area and steeply shelving shore.
  • Bathers in good-weather east-wind/summer periods.
  • Trees near shore at alternative Brombachsee launches can disturb wind.
  • Paid parking and carrying gear several hundred meters from the car.
Rules & access
2024-2026: the Zweckverband Brombachsee beach-use ordinance, in force since 16 Aug 2024, covers the Allmannsdorf recreation area and contains no kitesurfing-specific rule. General conduct duties apply: sport and play only where they do not endanger or disturb others, no camping, no unlicensed commercial activity, fines up to EUR 2,500 under that 2024 ordinance. Parts of the beach can be closed temporarily for swim lessons, competitions or overcrowding, with no fixed seasonal calendar. Pleinfeld names Allmannsdorf on the north shore as a kite-surf start area and warns that west wind can push riders toward the dam. No permit, licence or fixed seasonal kite closure is published.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Skip west wind unless you can hold height: the dam is about 100 m downwind in the lee.
  • Ask the school or whoever is rigging whether Allmannsdorf or Ramsberg suits the day's exact wind angle.
  • Keep off the passenger steamer's line across the lake.
  • Budget for paid parking and a 200-300 m carry from the car to the water.
  • On sunny east-wind days, launch clear of the bathers instead of through them.

FAQ

Is Allmannsdorf suitable for beginners?

No, the shore drops steeply and the standing-depth area is very small, so KITE Magazin recommends beginners take lessons rather than ride independently.

What is the wind like?

West and southwest are the main working directions and arrive cleanly, while northwest is very gusty because of wind shadow from the shoreline.

What are the main hazards?

In west wind the dam sits only about 100 m downwind, so riders who cannot hold their ground can be pushed onto it; passenger ferry traffic also crosses the lake.

Are there kite schools nearby?

Yes, Surf- und Kiteschule Brombachsee operates directly at Allmannsdorf, offering surf, SUP and kite courses.
