The spot

Location

Buen Hombre is a fishing village on the north-west coast in Monte Cristi Province, about a 3-hour drive from Cabarete, and the kiting is a reef lagoon in front of the village: flat, shallow, some of it only inches deep.

Wind

The trades come in E to ENE, side-on to side-shore depending where in the bay you launch, usually 15-25 knots and stronger than Cabarete because they hit the bay clean and the coast accelerates them. Kites are 7-10 m for most riders; bring the small ones.

Timing

When it starts is disputed, around 1 pm by one account and earlier than Cabarete by another, and it builds through the afternoon either way. June to August is the strongest and busiest stretch, the rideable season runs December to September, and late September into October or November is the wet gap.

Flat water and tricks

Good place to learn, good place for flat-water tricks, and the schools run downwinders out to the Siete Hermanos cays.

Hazards

The catch is the village itself: the launch is small and hemmed in by trees, power poles and fishing boats, the reef bites at low tide, and the nearest serious medical help is a long drive.

2026: no municipal permit, fee or riding zone for the village beach was found, and the launch runs on the two schools' own beach etiquette rather than a written rule.

Wildlife refuge

The Siete Hermanos cays that the downwinders and boat trips run out to are a wildlife refuge inside the Monte Cristi protected coastline: do not collect coral, shells or wildlife, do not disturb nesting birds, do not damage the reef, anchor only where it is appropriate and never on coral, and carry your rubbish back. Boobies nest on the cays from late May to early September, when the colonies need a wide berth.

Rider tips

Bring booties; the lagoon bottom has urchins and sharp shell, and the reef is exposed at low tide.
Ride the high tide. At low water rock and reef show through the shallows, some patches only inches deep.
Pack kites in the 7-10 m range plus spares; the schools rent bigger sizes for the light days but there is no full kite shop in the village.
Get a launch briefing from Kite Buen Hombre or Friendly Kite before an independent first session; the beach is narrow with poles and boats close behind.
Download offline maps for the drive from Cabarete, about 3 hours, and expect basic village rooms; a night was USD 10-40 in 2018.
Stay off the bird-nesting area near the beach from late May to early September.
