When it fills in

No fill-in hour to wait for. The wind is frontal rather than thermal, so a working day can be blowing from first light and a dead morning is not rescued by an afternoon sea breeze. Indicative: no measured onset time exists for the cove.

Cala Martina is a small cove on the east coast of Ibiza, between Es Canar and Santa Eularia, and it is a fraction of the size of Playa d'en Bossa.
Southwest is the direction that makes it work: it accelerates into the bay, reportedly arrives a little stronger than forecast, and leaves flat water for freestyle when the sky is clear. South is very onshore, which on a beach this small is the thing to think about before you launch. Ibiza wind is not reliable.
Usable wind above 15 knots turns up maybe two to four times per week, and winter storms run 15-30 knots on 5-8 m kites. The season is October to May; from April to October the beach rules tighten, the cove fills with tourists and anchored boats, and kiting here is reportedly not allowed from May to October (2023), with boat access the only way in.
Read the signage yourself, because the posted dates do not agree with each other. Behind the sand there is a grass field to rig on when it is empty.

Typical strength

15+ knots on the days it works. Ibiza winter storms generally run 15-30 knots.

Ibiza wind is unpredictable, but SW accelerates into the bay and reportedly comes in slightly stronger than forecast at Cala Martina. Under a clear sky it holds.
The practical beach season is October to May, or November to May depending on which posted dates you go by. Through the summer the cove belongs to tourists and anchored boats.

5-8 m covers the winter storm days at 15-30 knots. On an ordinary 15-20 knot day a 75-85 kg rider is on 9-12 m. Indicative, derived from the wind range rather than from a local kite log.

Direction to shore

S is very onshore, with S, SSW and SW listed as best directions; SW is identified as the working freestyle wind.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

A small east-coast cove with fine sand and shallow, calm water. Shallow chop and small waves are the norm; on southwest wind under a clear sky it goes flat.

The ratings disagree and nothing resolves them: one puts Cala Martina at every level, another warns that kitesurfing is dangerous for beginners without instruction. The beach is small and S wind is straight onshore, so a beginner needs a school and someone watching from the sand.

Rescue

No lifeguard tower and no rescue boat is documented for the cove. The municipal beach ordinance provides for a surveillance and rescue service whose boats may work inside the 200 m strip, but it names no beaches and no staffing dates, so cover at Cala Martina specifically is unconfirmed. 112 is the emergency number.
The kite school sits on the sand at C/Llevant (+34 971 330 452, +34 600 481 449) and is the nearest help on the beach in season.

Launch

Small sandy beach with room to launch and land in winter, plus a grass field behind it for rigging once the tourists and boats are gone. There is a shower and a toilet on the beach, and the kite school is on the cove at C/Llevant.

Rules & access
Municipal beach ordinance of Santa Eulària des Riu, approved 29 May 2008 and still the text published by the town hall in 2026: craft including sailing boards, rowing craft, windsurf boards and water skis are barred from operating within 200 m of the beach at all times, even with nobody in the water; beaching or leaving craft outside signposted zones is prohibited; buoyed entry and exit channels are fixed by the State, marked by the town hall, and swimming inside them is banned.
Kitesurfing is not named anywhere in that ordinance, and no kitesurf dates appear in it. That is why the posted seasons contradict one another: one set of dates bans beach kitesurfing on Ibiza in peak season and allows it only November to May, another sends you to the beach signage for April to October, a third closes Cala Martina to kiting May to October as a busy beach with boat access the only way in (2023). Read the sign on the day.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig on the grass field behind the beach, and only when it is clear.
  • Enter on the right-hand side as you look at the sea.
  • Leave yourself landing room on S days: it is straight onshore onto a small beach.
  • Do not plan a summer session off the sand; from May to October access is reportedly by boat only (2023).
  • Come between October and May and wait for SW, the direction that turns the cove flat.

FAQ

Is Cala Martina suitable for beginners?

Sources disagree: one lists it as suitable for all levels, while another warns kitesurfing is dangerous for inexperienced beginners without instruction, so local judgment on the small beach matters.

When is the best time to kite at Cala Martina?

October through May is the practical season, since summer tourists and boats occupy the small cove.

What is the wind like at Cala Martina?

South to southwest wind is the working setup, with S very onshore; usable wind above 15 knots is reported roughly two to four times a week in winter.

Are there rules for kiting at Cala Martina?

Posted seasons differ between sources, but most agree kiting is prohibited or restricted during the busy summer months, roughly May/June to September/October, so beach access should be confirmed locally.

Are there kite schools near Cala Martina?

Yes, Ciel Azul Ibiza is located by the beach, along with other listed schools such as Duotone Kiteschool Ibiza.
