Playa d'en Bossa is an off-season spot with an airport at one end. It is the longest beach on Ibiza, facing east-southeast, fine white sand over a shallow bottom with rocky patches. East is the wind here: light east leaves it choppy and side-on, more of it turns the sandbar into something surfable, and broader easterly sectors work too.
Beach launching is closed through the summer bathing season, roughly May to October, and open again roughly November to April/May, which is why the good window runs November to May on an island most people visit in August.
Kitesurfing is not allowed in the southern part of the beach because of airport safety, and the boundary is worth confirming on the sand, since no official map or ordinance text with exact dates was found.
Winter wind comes off storms, 15-30 knots and gusty, with 5-8 m the usual Ibiza storm range; summer thermal wind is a boat game on 11-13 m, building through the afternoon. Water runs 25.2 C in summer and 15.4 C in winter, and the spot is tide-independent. If you want a summer beach launch on Ibiza, this is not it.

Character

fills in: Summer thermal wind, when accessed by boat rather than beach launch, usually builds through the afternoon.

Typical strength

15-30 knots for Ibiza winter storm winds generally; one local video title reports a 25-30 knot Playa d'en Bossa session.

Light east is choppy and manageable for most riders. Stronger wind builds surf and raises the level needed. Winter wind runs off storms, so it is less predictable than a trade-wind island.
Beach launching is an off-season affair because of the bathing-season closure. The summer alternative is boat-based, which is a different trip and a different budget.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

The Sant Josep municipal lifeguard service covers this beach and staffs it more heavily than any other in the municipality: six lifeguards plus a coordination assistant, with a jet ski based here and three semi-rigid rescue boats working the municipality's coast from other bases.
In 2026 the full service ran 1 May to 31 October, with a partial Easter service from 23 March; hours were 11:00-18:00 in May, 11:00-19:00 from June, and 10:00-19:30 in July and August. The mismatch matters: that cover sits exactly on the months when beach kitesurfing is closed and stops before the winter kite season opens.
Nothing is kite-specific, and in winter the call is 112 or Salvamento Maritimo on 900 202 202.

Launch

Very long sandy beach south of Ibiza Town. The usable part is smaller than it looks: beach users take the middle in season and the southern end is closed for the airport.

Rules & access
2026: beach kitesurf launching at Playa d'en Bossa, and on most Ibiza beaches, is closed through the summer bathing season and open in the cooler months. Independent kite-specific sources put the closed window at roughly May to October and the open one at roughly November to April/May. Kitesurfing is not allowed in the southern part of the beach because of airport-safety regulations, and the posted general beach-conduct rules run April to October. No official municipal or Costas ordinance text with exact calendar dates was found, so the dates are unconfirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Keep out of the southern end of the beach; it is closed to kitesurfing for airport safety.
  • Take the light east days for easy freeride, and expect to need wave skills once the sandbar starts breaking.
  • Read the posted beach rules before you pump, especially in April and May, and again in October, when the seasons overlap.
  • For summer thermal wind, book a boat session instead of trying to launch off the sand.
  • Pack 5-8 m for a winter storm and 11-13 m for the light-wind boat days.
  • Ride with someone in winter. The lifeguards, the jet ski and the rescue boats all stop on 31 October and come back on 1 May, either side of the season you are here for.
