Curral Velho is the empty end of Boa Vista. The beach sits on the south coast below the ruins of an abandoned salt-trading hamlet, which is where the name comes from, and getting there is an hour or more of 4x4 track through the dunes from Sal Rei.
Same NE trades as the rest of the island, roughly late Oct-May, 16-28 knots; how that wind sits relative to the shore depends on the bay's orientation, and nobody has written it down. Open-ocean swell and current come straight in. There is nothing here: no school, no rescue, no phone signal, no other kiters to notice if you drift off.
That makes it a spot for self-sufficient, experienced riders who come with a guide or as one leg of a downwinder, and for nobody else. The whole coastline is loggerhead turtle nesting ground, so stay off the nesting stretches and keep away at night in season.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2020-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rider tips

  • Go with a local guide or on an organised 4x4 safari or downwind trip; do not drive in alone.
  • Carry everything: water, food, spare lines, pump, repair kit. There is no shop, no shade and no signal.
  • Stay off the beach at night in turtle season and give any nest markers a wide berth.
