The spot

El Burrero is the wind beach of Ingenio, just south of Gran Canaria Airport, and it lives in the shadow of Vargas and Pozo Izquierdo. It has held national kiteboarding championships and international wingfoil events, so the wind is not in doubt.

Wind conditions

The normal setup is the Alisios out of N-NE in the warm season, with S-SW also workable and less common. This is freeride and chop, not a sheltered teaching lagoon: the wind goes gusty close in because of the risco behind the beach, cleans up further out, and the water outside is very choppy.

Launch zone

The strip El Burrero shares with the San Agustin coast runs about 500 m, sand mixed with callaos, rocks in the entry area, a breakwater and rocks on the right side, shorebreak, medium currents.

Season and skill

Summer Alisios are the strong ones and winter drops off considerably, so treat May-September as the real season rather than assuming a year-round guarantee. Come here as an intermediate unless a local confirms the low-tide SW setup is safe that day.

For a beach with no resort attached the facilities are good: parking, showers, summer lifeguards and flags, buses, plus the Club Nautico El Burrero next door.

Local working beach rather than a resort spot: a small fishing/hostelry village with a beach popular among surfers and watersports users. It is mainly frequented by Ingenio residents in summer, with some island residents and fewer foreign tourists. Competition weeks for kiteboarding or wingfoil can make the beach temporarily busy.

Rescue

Municipal surveillance and lifeguard cover runs 1 July to 30 September, seven days a week, 11:00-19:00 from the beach post; the 2026 service is contracted to Pro-Activa Serveis Aquatics, normally two water lifeguards and a coordinator with rescue and medical kit.

Coverage scope and changes

It exists for the bathing zone, not for a kiter downwind, and outside that window nobody is on the sand. The end date has moved before: in 2023 the service ran from June to 1 November. The Club Nautico El Burrero on the seafront, 609 096 941 on weekdays 09:00-21:00, is the practical local contact.

Launch off the sand at El Burrero, inside the signed zoning and clear of the rocks, the breakwater and the bathing area.Entry and exit go over rocks and sand, with rocks on the right side of the beach; there are ramps down to the sand and marked entry and exit for recreational craft.Some riders instead rig at San Agustín next door and sail across to El Burrero and the Bahía de Gando.

Services and regulations

2026: lifeguard and surveillance service 1 July to 30 September, daily 11:00-19:00, with the sea-state flags flown only in that window. Beach use is governed by the Ordenanza de Uso y Disfrute de las Playas of Ingenio, published in the BOP de Las Palmas number 158 on 22 December 2004; fines run 150-300 euro for minor breaches, 301-750 euro for serious ones and 751-1,500 euro for very serious ones. Article 24 bans dogs from the beach except rescue and guide dogs, restated by the council in May 2025 after complaints about the bathing zone.

Kite zones

No special permit is required to kitesurf anywhere on Gran Canaria. The beach carries a zonal map with signed entry and exit for recreational craft and an exclusive windsurf and kitesurf zone; the zoning has been moved before, so read the signage on the day. El Burrero has held the Blue Flag since 2018, and public toilets are open in the summer season by lifeguard permission.

Rider tips

Check the tide first: low tide is the one to ride here.
Walk the entry and the exit before you rig, because the sand-and-stone mix and the breakwater on the right decide where you can get in.
Do not judge the wind from the sand. It is gusty on the shore and cleaner outside.
Bring small kites in peak summer; the 2026 events at El Burrero ran 35-40+ knots.
Respect the beach zoning and the current signage, especially in summer with bathers and lifeguards on the sand and the flags up.
If you cannot see where the kite and wing launch is, ask at Club Nautico El Burrero or the riders on the beach; the zoning has been moved before.
Outside 1 July to 30 September there are no lifeguards and no flags. Ride it as an unsupervised beach and bring someone who can land you.
Boots are worth packing: the entry is rock and callao, not sand.

By car, leave the GC-1 at exit 18 (Carrizal/GC-191), turn toward El Burrero and follow it down to the seafront. By bus, line 85 runs Playa del Burrero to Los Molinillos, and from the airport you take a bus to Las Majoreras and walk in.

8 minutes by taxi or private transfer. On public transport, the airport bus leg is followed by a 28 minute walk from Las Majoreras.
