On the clock
08:00 · 11:00 · 14:00
Not an afternoon spot in the usual sense. The modelled 2022-2025 pattern is dead overnight, builds from about 08:00, is at its best between 11:00 and 14:00, and slides off through the late afternoon. Indicative, from a model rather than a beach anemometer.
The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Typical strength
The range quoted for this bay is 12 to 30-plus knots, and it is an average of two beacons up the coast rather than a reading from the beach. Forecasts run low here: the local correction is to multiply a model figure by 1.5 to 2, so a 20-25 knot prediction can land at 30-35 on the water. Against that, a modelled 2022-2025 series at the shore reaches 12 knots in only about one afternoon hour in ten, which matches the spot's reputation as lightly used.
The quiver, in words
Island quiver guidance for an average Réunion rider is 7-10 m², 5-14 m² across the whole range. No Étang-Salé-specific kite size is published.
Direction to shore
The beach faces about south-south-west. South-east trades run along the shore, but the island's relief takes most of them out before they reach this coast. The north-west the spot is usually said to need comes in side-offshore, which is why a lull leaves you working to get back.South and south-south-east arrive side-onshore. Inferred from the beach orientation.
Dominant direction
Conflicting: mainly SSE/S with N to W also given, or NW only, or regular SE alizés. Unresolved.

The model is wrong here
The model reads 26% of days at its best month, which does not sit with the season and the wind strength this record states. The figures are kept and drawn as hatching so no wind colour can be read off them, and the ringed months are the ones riders name.

riders' months
Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.
Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water
Type
waves
Standing depth
No standing-depth lagoon in the kite area: the riding is open ocean with waves. Flat water sits on the Bassin Pirogue side, but access and navigation there are reportedly prohibited.
Tides
Small and semi-diurnal, two highs and two lows a day. An ordinary day runs about 0.09 m at low water to 0.47 m at high, so tide is not what decides a session; swell and wind are. Mid-tide is the usual call for the left-hand wave.
Temperature
26-29°C summer · 22-24°C winter
Wetsuit
Boardshorts/rash vest are generally enough; a 2 mm top or shorty can be useful at dawn, dusk, or in windy conditions.

Rider tips
- Do not plan on Bassin Pirogue: access and navigation there are prohibited.
- Ask local riders which direction is actually working before you rig, because the published guidance contradicts itself.
- Arrange boat support or stay conservative, since a small wind variation can make the return to shore difficult.
- Launch from Étang-Salé beach and move well away from the bathers and the supervised swimming zone.
- Keep off the simulator and wave area when the surfers or the surf school are on it.
- Wear shoes on the black sand; in full sun it gets too hot to stand on.
Getting there
Airport
Roland Garros Airport (RUN) for most arrivals; Saint-Pierre Pierrefonds Airport (ZSE) is the nearest passenger airport to the break.
Route
Drive to the beach at Étang-Salé-les-Bains; kite access is from Étang-Salé beach itself. Roland Garros Airport to L'Étang-Salé is about 71 km by road.

Staying
Stay in Étang-Salé-les-Bains, Saint-Leu or Saint-Pierre depending on whether you want the black-sand beach, west-coast breaks or the Saint-Pierre kite hub nearby.

FAQ
Is Étang-Salé-les-Bains suitable for beginners?
No, general Réunion guidance says all listed spots require autonomous confirmed-to-expert riders, though some sources separately rate it intermediate.
What is the wind like?
Sources conflict: one lists SSE/S plus N-W as working directions, another says only NW works, and a third describes regular SE trades, so ask local riders which direction is actually working.
Are there rules or restricted zones?
Access and navigation at the adjacent Bassin Pirogue are prohibited under an integral maritime protection zone; kiters should access via Étang-Salé beach and move away from bathers.
What are the main hazards?
Very hot black volcanic sand underfoot, shark-risk vigilance on this open coast, and a wind shadow that can make returning to shore difficult if the wind changes.
