The spot

Falsterbo Strandbad is the south-facing beach at Sweden's southwestern tip: a long run of white sand, with chop to small waves rolling in off deeper water. It is one beach in a cluster: Skanör, Parkvägen at Höllviken and Falsterbo Kanalen sit minutes away and each wants a different angle, so the day's direction decides where you launch rather than whether you ride at all.

Wind

The Strand itself works on easterly through southerly wind, which is not the prevailing southwest, so check before you drive out.

Water conditions

There are standable sections, but the water shelves fast, seaweed fouls lines near shore, and a rider who cannot hold upwind ends up grinding along the beach among the bathers.

Rules and summer

The thing you plan around is the rules: Vellinge municipality confines riding to mapped zones from 15 June to 15 August, and the county marine reserve closes some areas year-round and others from 1 March to 1 July. Peak summer is thick with swimmers, so use the marked corridors and give yourself extra room on launch.

Access

Copenhagen Airport is the easy way in, roughly 40 minutes by car and around 1.5 hours by public transport.

Dominant direction

Southwest dominates the annual record and suits Skanör, Falsterbo Kanalen and Höllviken better than Falsterbo Strand. The south-facing Strand itself wants ESE through SSW to give a workable beach angle, and reads increasingly onshore as the wind swings south.

Big-kite territory. Sessions here mostly land in the 10-20 kt band, so a 75-85 kg rider is on a 12 m for the bulk of them, drops to 9-10 m when a front pushes it past 20 kt, and needs 14-15 m or a foil to get anything at all out of a light day.Bring the light-wind kite: it will get more use here than the small one. No local school publishes a size-by-weight chart, so treat these as derived from the wind band rather than quoted by a school.

Average strength

13 kt annual average with gusts to 18 kt and a dominant southwest, recorded at a Falsterbo station between 2002-06-01 and 2023-09-30 before it stopped reporting. That is nearly double the roughly 7 kt from the Malmö station 30 km inland, which badly understates the exposed peninsula tip.

Typical strength

Most sessions run in the 10-20 kt band, with 16-22 kt the sweet spot when a front comes through. The 13 kt annual mean and 18 kt gusts are the fair expectation; higher headline averages circulating for this spot do not match the station record.

Frontal, synoptic maritime wind, so the quality tracks the weather system rather than the hour of day. KSurf cancels or reschedules lessons when it comes in too weak, too strong or badly gusty.

This is a cluster, not one beach: Falsterbo Strand, Skanör, Höllviken/Parkvägen and Falsterbo Kanalen each want a different angle, so the day's direction decides where you go rather than whether you ride at all.

Falsterbo Strand faces south to southeast and needs ESE through S; the prevailing southwest works better on the other beaches. Summer is constrained by bathers and the 15 June-15 August zone rules, and spring and autumn bring the bigger systems.

Winter riding happens, but the sea sits around 4 C and ice can form on the water.

Standable at both high and low water along the main Falsterbo Strandbad frontage, over a smooth sandy bottom, though depth varies along several kilometres of beach. It shelves faster than a lagoon and the chop rolls in off deeper water. Nearby Parkvägen at Höllviken drops away quickly at the entry but is waist-deep flat water once you are out.

Tides

Effectively tideless. The Öresund range here is about 0.1 m and the spot is not tide dependent; what moves the water level is wind and air pressure, not the moon. The beach is standable at either state, though rocks can show in the outer sections at low water.

Rescue

No lifeguard and no kite-club safety service at Falsterbo Strandbad. Emergency calls go to 112.

The nearest sea rescue is the volunteer station RS Falsterbokanalen at Västra Hamnplan 5 in Höllviken, founded in 2001 with around 38 volunteer crew, covering the busy Öresund shipping water; its duty phone is 0705-87 80 59.

Cold water is the real risk outside high summer, with the sea averaging 4.3 C in winter, so ride with someone watching from the beach instead of counting on a boat arriving.

Launch

Sandy beach launch at Falsterbo Strandbad: fine white sand, a broad waterline and room to lay out lines without obstacles. 2026: Vellinge municipality's wind- and kitesurfing zone applies 15 June-15 August, and in that window riding is confined to the mapped surf zones, marked on the beach by a post with a small flag. The municipal map also shows areas where wind- and kitesurfing is never allowed, areas open 16 August-14 June and usable in summer only when the beach and water are empty of bathers, and an area at Kämpinge closed 1 March-1 July.

County and permits

County reserve rules for Falsterbohalvöns havsområde ban wind- and kitesurfing year-round in the mapped red/green striped areas and from 1 March-1 July in the mapped red-dot areas. The permitted zones were worked out with local surfers rather than imposed on them, and no permit is required. The municipality can be reached on 040-42 50 00 for the current map.

Rider tips

Check Vellinge municipality's current kite and windsurf map before every summer session, and the county reserve maps before riding anywhere near the tip; Måkläppen and the bird zones have their own seasonal access rules.
Look for the post with the small flag between 15 June and 15 August: that is how the permitted corridor is marked on the beach.
Ride the Strand on E to SE and S wind; if the direction is wrong, move to Skanör harbour, Parkvägen at Höllviken or Falsterbo Kanalen rather than forcing an offshore angle.
In June to August clear the bathing area quickly, and do not drop the kite close to shore when the seaweed is in, because that is where lines foul.
Make the 12 m your main kite and carry something near 9 m for frontal days; the light-wind kite earns its bag space here.

Copenhagen Airport is the main international gateway to Skåne. Trains cross the Öresund Bridge to Malmö and Hyllie, then Skånetrafiken buses run out toward Falsterbo and Skanör. Driving from CPH to Falsterbo is about 50-51 km; public transport is roughly 1 h 20-30 min depending on the connection.
