No fixed daily start. The shamal is a synoptic wind rather than a sea breeze, so during an episode it can already be blowing at dawn and run for three to five days; it presses hardest through the middle of the day and eases after dark. Session times are set around the forecast instead of a clock, and the kite centre fixes the day's window the evening before.

The spot

Fuwairit Kite Beach is a purpose-built kite resort on Qatar's northern coast near Fuwayrit, built around a shallow lagoon with a sand bottom and clean northerly to northwesterly wind. You ride inside a managed operation rather than on an open beach: day passes, a set window, a rental fleet, a rescue craft and a hotel behind the sand.

Season and wind

The season runs November to July, or November through the end of June depending on who is counting, with 15-30 kt the usual working band and the June shamal the strongest of it.

Tide and obstacles

The lagoon needs about a metre of tide before a twin-tip makes sense; under that it drains to knee depth and you walk. On the seaward side of the beach, sharp coral sits millimetres under the surface at low water.

Turtles and distance

Turtles matter here, because Fuwairit is one of Qatar's main hawksbill nesting beaches and in 2026 the nesting season ran April 1 to August 1 with the nesting area fenced off. It is remote by Qatari standards, one to two hours by road from Doha/Hamad International Airport, and at the back of the season the heat is a bigger problem than the wind.

For a 75-85 kg rider on a twin-tip: 12m covers the common 15-18 kt days, 9-10m carries the usual 20-25 kt band, and 7-8m is the June shamal kite when it pushes past 30 kt. The rental fleet is Duotone, so hire sizes track the same range.

Typical strength

15-30 kt through the November-July season, most days landing in the 16-25 kt band. Competition week in early February was forecast at 18-24 kt. June shamal spells are the outlier and reach about 35 kt.

Kite operations run November to July. Side-onshore 15-30 kt is the working description of the season, with the wind arriving from the left as you face the water.

The windy season is also given as November to the end of June, with June shamal days producing the strongest wind, up to about 35 kt. Qatar's strongest northerly shamals are most frequent in June, July and August, so the back end of the season is windy and very hot rather than windless. Modelled monthly means for the lagoon are far lower than the operator ranges, 7-12 kt, which is the gap between an average over every day and a range quoted for rideable ones.

Standing depth

You can stand across most of the lagoon, but only when the tide has filled it. Roughly a metre of tide is the working minimum before twin-tip riding makes sense; below that it drains to ankle and knee depth, too thin to swim in, and you can walk out hundreds of metres. On the open-sea side of the beach depth runs from a few inches to well over head height.

Tidal, and the tide is the planning variable rather than a detail. The lagoon needs about a metre of tide to be worth rigging for, and heights like that come round every day, so the job is matching the tide window to the wind window.During the 31 Jan-4 Feb 2023 event high water fell in the late morning and slid into the early afternoon across the week. Sea temperature runs around 26 °C generally, dipping to about 20 °C in January, with 18–20 °C recorded for January-February 2023. No data on current strength was found.

Rescue

First aid and a marine rescue craft are run from the kite centre during operating hours, which is why the lagoon works for beginners at all. Away from the resort there is nothing on this stretch of coast: no lifeguards, no club, no boat. Qatar's single emergency number is 999.

Launch

A built kite centre on the lagoon rather than a beach launch: white sand, teaching and briefing rooms, changing facilities, rental gear and a competition and media centre.

2026: independent riding runs through paid access rather than free public self-launch. A half-day pass is QAR 120, a full-day pass with your own equipment QAR 160, and a full-day pass with equipment hire QAR 730, covering the beach, dining area, terrace, bar, showers and changing rooms.

Pass details and requirements

2026: the own-equipment day pass runs eight hours and its start time is confirmed one day before arrival around the wind forecast; if the wind fails you are offered a reschedule or an activity of equivalent value. 2026: minimum age 11, minimum weight 32 kg, and riders must be confident open-water swimmers. No kite certification level is stated as a condition of the day pass.

Turtle nesting season

2026: the hawksbill turtle nesting season ran from 1 April to 1 August, with the Fuwairit nesting area fenced and closed to the public and a separate stretch of beach left open to visitors. Confirm the riding zone and any turtle-season limits before arrival.

Match the tide, not just the wind: under about a metre the lagoon is a walk, not a session.
Confirm your pass time the day before, because the centre sets the day's window around the wind forecast.
The wind comes from the left as you face the water, so plan your upwind and your walk back accordingly.
Stay off the seaward side at low water, where the coral is millimetres down; the lagoon side is the forgiving one.
Keep out of the fenced hawksbill nesting zone from April 1 to August 1, and keep light and noise away from the turtles.
Bring real sun cover and water, and note that day-pass riders must be confident open-water swimmers, minimum age 11 and 32 kg.
