Nearby Lüderitz Second Lagoon / Speed Spot 7 km · straight-line distance

Guano Bay sits on the Lüderitz peninsula near Diaz Point, looking across at Halifax Island. It is a real spot with its own forecast page and a place on the Lüderitz coastal camps, and next to nothing is documented about riding it.
Expect cold South Atlantic water, a launch of sand and stones, ocean chop with small waves, and Lüderitz wind that runs extreme rather than friendly. The best directions are S, SSW and SW, and the strong season runs roughly September to March, with the southern-summer afternoons doing the damage. Intermediate and up; a beginner has no business here.
The land question matters more than usual: the peninsula sits inside or against restricted diamond ground and protected areas, and while the Diaz Point road and the access to Guano Bay are reportedly open, check in town before you rig. Halifax Island is a penguin and seabird site, so stay off it and give it room.
Bring warm rubber, your own rescue plan and somebody who has been here before.

fills in: Afternoons are generally stronger than mornings on the Namibian coast; no Guano Bay-specific onset time found.

Typical strength

Summer afternoons around Lüderitz run over 40 km/h (about 22 kt), and southern Lüderitz reaches 30-45 kt. No Guano Bay-only range is published.

Strong and exposed Lüderitz wind, thermal in character, best from S, SSW and SW. It comes off a South Atlantic pressure gradient over an upwelling coast, and the afternoons blow very hard.
The best months given are January, February, March, August, September, October, November and December. January, November and December come out strongest on a wind-probability table, with October and February close behind. One model puts the windier part of the Lüderitz year from September 19 to March 14.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Tide predictions are published for Lüderitz Bay. The spot itself is called tide-independent while the usable beach is called tidal, so what the tide does to your launch is unconfirmed.

Temperature

17°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

Full wetsuit for winter; a shorty or a normal suit is reported for spring, summer and autumn. Lüderitz sea temperature averages about 17 C in February and 13 C in August, so most riders will want the full suit all year.

Currents

Cold Benguela upwelling coast. No current report exists for this launch specifically.

11–14°C water
Ocean with small waves off a beach of sand and stones, described elsewhere as sea and lagoon over sand and rock. The bay lies beside Halifax Island, part of the rocky, seabird-rich Lüderitz Bay island group inside a strong upwelling cell. No standing-depth zone and no rescue channel is confirmed.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Intermediate and expert. The extreme Lüderitz wind and the cold water are the reason. Beginner and intermediate instruction is available in Lüderitz, but not at Guano Bay.

Rules & access
2026: Tsau //Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park is classed as restricted-access for tourism, though the drive to Diaz Point and the access to Guano Bay facing Halifax Island is reportedly open. Kitesurfing may require a special permit or membership of a local organisation, so ask before you go. No 2026 kitesurf-specific permit, zoning map or beach ordinance for Guano Bay is independently confirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask in Lüderitz about the current Diaz Point and Tsau //Khaeb access before driving out, and stay on permitted tracks in the diamond area.
  • Read the Diaz Point wind and the Lüderitz Bay tide, not the town forecast alone.
  • Pack small kites and a full suit even in February, when the sea still averages about 17 C.
  • Keep off Halifax Island and away from the birds unless a competent local authority tells you otherwise.
  • Go with Lüderitz locals or an organised kite trip the first time; there are no facilities, no rescue and almost no beach information.

Getting there

Airport

Lüderitz Airport (LUD) is the nearest, close to Kolmanskop. As of August 2026 direct scheduled Windhoek-Lüderitz service looks inconsistent: the FlyNamibia service of April 2-22, 2026 was reported as temporary, and booking searches show no direct Windhoek-Lüderitz flights.

Route

Drive to Lüderitz on the B4, then take the gravel washboard road toward Diaz Point, about 20 km from town. A normal car reaches the public Diaz Point road in dry conditions; kite camps use 4x4, truck or bus, and it is worth checking road and park restrictions before leaving the marked route.

FAQ

Is Guano Bay suitable for beginners?

No, it is rated for intermediate and expert riders because of very strong Lüderitz wind and cold water; general Lüderitz beginner instruction elsewhere does not apply specifically to this bay.

What is the wind like?

Wind is a strong synoptic southerly system with S, SSW and SW as the best directions, with summer afternoons commonly exceeding 40 km/h and sometimes reaching 30-45 knots.

When is the best time to go?

Best months run roughly August through March, with January, November and December marked as the strongest wind months.

Are there access rules?

The road to Diaz Point and Guano Bay is reported open, but the peninsula sits near restricted diamond-area land, so riders should stay on permitted roads and check locally before going.

What hazards should riders know?

Rocks and stones cover parts of the beach, the water is cold, and Halifax Island next to the bay is an important seabird and penguin site that should not be disturbed.
