When it fills in

There is no daily rhythm to plan around. The wind here is synoptic and arrives with the weather system rather than at an hour of the day, which is why the school will not put kite courses in the diary far ahead and runs a mailing list for short-notice dates instead. No local measurement of a daily cycle exists.

Hainer See is a former lignite-mining lake of about 600 ha, roughly 20 minutes by car from Leipzig's city boundary, and Wakebeach on the north shore is the one place on the Leipzig-region lakes where kiting is more or less tolerated; everywhere else it is largely prohibited under Saxon shipping rules, as of 2026. Tolerated is the operative word.
The exception permit from 2017 ran until the end of 2022 and no current written permit text, zone map or registration rule has turned up, so call Wake-Beach before you drive.
The wind is inland and moody: west and east are the cross-lake directions that work, northwest comes through turbulent and partly offshore, and in west wind the downwind exits are poor.
The launch by the beach-volleyball field is small, with obstacles close in, and you share the water with wakeboard, waterski and SUP traffic; once you are clear of the shore there is flat water and room. Wake-Beach runs beginner courses with a motorboat, which is the sensible way in for a first-timer here.
The water averages about 20 C in June, 22 C in July and 21 C in August and 5-7 C in the winter months, so for most people this is a summer and shoulder-season lake.

Typical strength

No measured statistic exists for the lake. The modelled long-run annual mean is about 6 kt from the southwest, which is an all-hours figure across every calm day and not what anyone drives out for. This is a forecast spot: you ride the front, not the average.

Inland wind, moody and variable; even Wake-Beach does not schedule kite courses far ahead because of it. NW is unpleasant and turbulent.
No best-month data exists for Hainer See; it is a forecast spot, not a season spot.

synoptic inland wind

The quiver, in words

No local size table exists. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider on flat inland water: 12-15 m through the ordinary 12-16 kt day, 9-11 m when a front pushes past 20 kt, a foil or a 17 m if you want anything out of the light days. Derived from what the lake's wind figures imply, not from local riders.

Direction to shore

W and E are the useful cross-lake setups at Wakebeach; NW is reported turbulent and partly offshore.

Dominant direction

W and E, with WSW/ESE also listed in spot guides.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

lake

Standing depth

A standing shelf runs out roughly one line length from the Wakebeach launch, reportedly, and the water over it is flat. Past that the bottom drops away into the old mining pit. No depth profile has been measured or published.

Tides

None; inland former mining lake.

Temperature

Summer Third-party water-temperature table gives Hainer See average water temperatures around 20 C in June, 22 C in July and 21 C in August, with July max around 25 C.

Winter Third-party water-temperature table gives average water temperatures around 5-7 C in December-February.

Wetsuit

Summer thin wetsuit or shorty depending on wind chill; spring/autumn full suit; winter thick cold-water suit. No Wake-Beach-specific wetsuit table was found.

Currents

No tidal current; no source found for significant lake current.

Large former lignite-mining lake in the Leipziger Neuseenland, about 600 ha. Flat water with enough room on the lake once clear of the small launch area.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginners are fine inside a Wake-Beach course, which comes with a motorboat and teachers. On your own, think twice: the launch is small with obstacles close in, and kiting here is tolerated rather than permitted outright.

Rescue

Wake-Beach courses run with a motorboat on the water. Nothing is confirmed for independent riders.

Launch

Start and land by the beach-volleyball field, obstacles close by. The kite area is marked with buoys and riding is confined to it; the way in is on foot through the campsite, which is now fenced, so ask at Wake-Beach, whose station sits just before the campsite entrance on the right, or at the campsite reception before rigging.Parking at the spot itself is prohibited and checked regularly; the paid car park five minutes away is reportedly 8 euro a day.

Hazards riders report 13

  • obstacles near launch
  • NW wind is turbulent and partly offshore
  • poor downwind exit options in west wind
  • Obstacles near the start/landing area.
  • Small launch at Wakebeach.
  • NW wind is reported turbulent and partly offshore.
  • Poor downwind exit options in west wind.
  • Kiting in the Leipzig lake region is generally restricted or prohibited outside exceptions.
  • Wakeboard, waterski, SUP and other Wake-Beach users share the wider watersports area.
  • Former mining lake with deep water; standing-depth details unconfirmed.
  • The standing shelf is only about a line length wide; past it the lake drops into the old mining pit.
  • Riding outside the buoyed kite area is not covered by the exception the lake rides on.
  • Access is on foot through a fenced campsite, and parking at the spot is prohibited and checked.
Rules & access
  • 2026: kitesurfing on the Leipzig-region lakes is still largely prohibited under Saxon shipping rules; Hainer See is the exception, where kiting is more or less tolerated.
  • 2017: Hainer See got an official exception permit, initially valid until the end of 2022. 2024: riders reportedly describe kiting as officially allowed at two marked spots on the lake, with wingfoiling permitted more widely across the Leipzig lakes. The kite area is buoyed and riding is only permitted inside the marking; access runs through the fenced campsite and the standing advice from riders is to ask Wake-Beach or the campsite reception first. No current written 2026 permit text, zone map or registration rule for independent riders has been found; check with Wake-Beach before riding.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Call or message Wake-Beach before you drive; the terms for independent riders are not published anywhere we could find.
  • Skip NW forecasts: at the launch the wind is turbulent and partly offshore.
  • Ride inside the buoyed kite area if the buoys are out; if there is no marking, ask at Wake-Beach or the camping reception where the line is.
  • Do not book a long weekend on the forecast alone; inland wind here changes fast enough that even the school will not schedule courses far ahead.
  • Launch and land by the beach-volleyball field and stay clear of the wakeboard, waterski and SUP lanes.
  • In west wind know your downwind exit before you go out; the options along the shore are poor.
  • Walk in through the campsite; the Wake-Beach station is just before the campsite entrance on the right. Do not park at the spot, it is checked.
  • Get on the school's mailing list if you want lessons; dates go out at short notice because the wind will not be booked in advance.
