When it fills in

Nothing thermal to wait for; the wind comes with the front and can be there at any hour. The clock that matters is the rule rather than the weather: riding is daylight only, and you cannot start until the watersports centre is open to take your registration.

Schladitzer Bucht is a managed kitebeach on Schladitzer See, a flooded lignite pit about 11 km north of Leipzig. Fresh water, flat to choppy, 22 m at its deepest, and inland wind that is gustier and less dependable than anything on the coast. You need paperwork before you rig.
In 2026 the operator requires independent riders to register at Wassersportcenter I or II, show a kitesurf licence of at least VDWS Level 4 or equivalent, and pay 5 EUR per day or 40 EUR for a season pass (2026); kiting is daylight only, inside the marked zone, at your own risk. That is the price of an exception.
Kitesurfing stays forbidden on most lakes around Leipzig and across Saxony, and here it is allowed only under defined weather conditions and time windows. The grass rigging field is about 200 x 50 m and shared with the school, so give lessons room.
Boat rescue has come with the registration; whether it runs every day the kitebeach is open is unconfirmed. Which directions work best is unconfirmed too: NE, ENE, WSW, W, WNW and SW in one version, SE and NE best with S and N rideable in another.
No best-month list is on record either, so treat any windy day with the center open as the season.

fills in: Nothing thermal to wait for; the wind comes with the front and can be there at any hour. The clock that matters is the rule rather than the weather: riding is daylight only, and you cannot start until the watersports centre is open to take your registration.

Typical strength

Inland lake wind: gusty and rarely strong. The nearest long-record station, Leipzig/Halle airport about 8 km away, averages 9 kt across the year with WSW dominant and gusts to 14, measured from November 2000 to July 2026. Sessions happen on the frontal days that lift it into the mid to high teens. Nothing is measured on the lake itself, and the lake's own forecast point publishes no statistics.

Inland synoptic lake wind, gustier and less reliable than the German coast. No dependable long-term average wind speed for the kite zone is published.
No best-month list is on record. The center runs year-round, but actual kiting depends on operator rules, daylight and enough wind.

Thermal or synoptic

synoptic inland wind

The quiver, in words

Indicative, no local log. For 75-85 kg: 13-15 m on the ordinary 12-15 kt day, 10-12 m at 18-20 kt, 9 m when a front pushes past 22. The lake is underpowered far more often than it is overpowered, and the gusts are the reason to keep a size in hand rather than to go small.

Direction to shore

The kitebeach sits in the southeast corner of the lake, so the westerly family arrives across the full length of the water: W, WSW and WNW come in side-onshore with the longest fetch, while NE and E blow off the near bank. Which directions work best is disputed between the published lists. Derived from the launch position, not confirmed by the operator.

Dominant direction

Published directions conflict: NE, ENE, WSW, W, WNW and SW in one version; SE and NE best, with S and N rideable, in another.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

lake

Standing depth

Standing depth reaches only about 3 m out from the shore edge, and then the bottom drops away. This is a flooded pit, 12 m deep on average and 22 m at its deepest, so everything past the first few metres is swimming water and a body-dragged kite is a swim, not a walk. The 3 m figure is unconfirmed elsewhere.

Tides

No tides; inland former mining lake.

Temperature

19°C summer · 4°C winter

Wetsuit

A wetsuit is normally needed outside warm midsummer; published averages show about 19 C in summer and about 4 C in winter, so cold-water neoprene is required in winter.

Former lignite open-cast mine lake near Leipzig with flat to choppy freshwater. The lake has a listed 218 ha surface area, 6.5 km shoreline, 22 m maximum depth and 12 m average depth. Grass rigging and a local school launch are at Schladitzer Bucht; the operator runs a regulated kitebeach rather than open kiting around the whole lake.

As of 2026, independent riders must register and show at least VDWS Level 4 or equivalent, so this is not an unsupervised beginner spot. Lessons may be possible through the local watersports center, but beginner suitability for independent kiters is unconfirmed.

Rescue

No public rescue service covers the kite zone. Boat rescue has been described as part of the registration package, but the operator's own 2026 kitesurf rules page lists fees, licence level, age and zones without mentioning a rescue boat at all, so ask at the Wassersportcenter when you sign in rather than assuming it.
The bathing beach is supervised by the local water rescue service during swimming operations, which is a lifeguard service for swimmers and not a kite pickup. Emergencies go to 112. Given the depth, self-rescue on this lake means a long swim, so keep the marked zone and the bank close.

Launch

Grass rigging and launch meadow at Schladitzer Bucht, about 200 x 50 m, shared with the local kiteschool. Access is through the operator's kitebeach/marked entry rather than informal launching around the lake.

Rules & access
2026: independent kitesurfing at the Schladitzer See kitebeach requires registration at Wassersportcenter I or II with the Camp David / ALL-on-SEA operator and a kitesurf licence of at least VDWS Level 4 or equivalent, meaning you can hold height reliably and know the right-of-way rules. The wording is per session, not per visit: a valid day registration at 5 EUR or season registration at 40 EUR is required for every kitesurf session (2026). Minimum age 16. Riding is daylight only and at the rider's own risk; the marked start and landing zone must be used and no other; the marked kite zone is the only water you may use, with swimming areas, white-buoyed restricted zones and nature protection areas off limits. Teaching yourself or each other is prohibited on land and on water, and staff instructions are binding. The whole thing runs on an official exemption permit, because kitesurfing is otherwise generally prohibited here; 2026 regional guidance keeps it forbidden on most Leipzig-region lakes, with Schladitzer See an exception allowed only under defined weather conditions and time windows. The registration rule has reportedly existed since 2017, and the launch field is shared with the school.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Register at Wassersportcenter I or II before you rig; independent kiting without registration is not allowed.
  • Bring your VDWS Level 4 card or equivalent proof, plus 5 EUR for the day or 40 EUR for the season pass (2026).
  • Ride only inside the marked kite zone. Schladitzer See is one of the few Leipzig lakes where kiting is allowed at all, and it stays that way only if people keep to it.
  • On the grass and on the water, give the school's lessons and staff priority.
  • Phone or check the operator's day rules before driving out: kiting is allowed only under defined weather conditions and time windows, and daylight only.
  • Do not read this as a standing-depth lake. You can stand for about three metres off the bank and then it is 12 m under you.
  • Rig big. The nearest long-record station averages 9 kt across the year, and the 13-15 m is the kite that gets the sessions.
  • Carry coins for the parking machine; the tickets are checked and the fines are not small.

FAQ

Are there rules or restricted zones?

Yes. The 2026 operator page requires registration and a kitesurf licence of at least VDWS Level 4 or equivalent for independent riders, who must ride only in the marked kite zone.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Not for independent riders; the registration and licence requirement means it is treated as an intermediate-and-up spot, though lessons may be available through the local school.

What is the wind like?

Sources disagree on the best direction, variously naming northeast, southwest and westerly winds, with generally gustier conditions than the coast.

Are there kite schools nearby?

ALL-on-SEA at the Camp David Sport Resort runs the Schladitzer See kitebeach and its registration system.
