On the clock

The best wind is typically 9:00 AM-12:00 PM; a small thermal effect is also noted in July-August afternoons.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Nathon is Koh Samui's west-coast kite spot and the island's ferry and commercial town at the same time. It runs on the southwest monsoon, which is what makes it the other half of Samui: the east and south-east beaches work on the northeast monsoon, and in December-February that NE is straight offshore here, so winter riders go elsewhere.
Lessons run in front of the shop from May to November; the honest riding window is June-September, SW to W at 10-25 knots on 8-12 m. The bay is shallow and sandy, mostly flat with some chop and waist-high in places, so it is easy water to learn in and easy water to cruise.
Best wind is usually 9:00 AM-12:00 PM, with a small thermal kick on July-August afternoons. The catch is the port. Ferries, fishing boats and transport boats work the pier, and you need to give that whole zone room; cloud lines in the southwest season also bring sudden stronger wind, so watch what is coming across the channel.

Nathon is Samui's west-coast option once the southwest monsoon reaches the island. Lessons run directly in front of the Nathon shop from May to November; June-September is the part of that window that actually delivers. December-February northeast monsoon is offshore here.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

No lifeguard service and no kite rescue are documented for this beach. On a lesson you have the school's cover from the shop directly behind the launch; riding independently, assume self-rescue and someone watching from the sand, and remember that a downwind drift here takes you toward the pier and the working boat lanes.

Launch

Beach launch directly in front of the KBA Nathon shop, with easy beach access and ample setup space.

Hazards riders report 5

  • ferry and boat traffic near the port
  • trees near the beach
  • storm fronts or large cloud formations causing sudden stronger wind
  • offshore NE monsoon winds in December-February
  • ferry, fishing, and transport-boat traffic around Nathon port

Rider tips

  • Do not ride Samui's winter NE monsoon at Nathon; it is offshore here.
  • Ride mornings, 9:00 AM-12:00 PM. July-August afternoons get an extra thermal push.
  • Keep well clear of Nathon Pier and the working boat lanes.
  • Get the forecast from the school on the day, because a cloud line changes the wind strength fast.
