Nosy Be

advanced only

Nosy Be has no other spot on this map within 40 km of it. straight-line distance

Nosy Be is a volcanic island off Madagascar's northwest coast, reached by ferry from Ankify. The Tsaratanana massif inland takes the edge off the trade wind before it gets here, so the wind is thinner and less reliable than at Diego Suarez and Sakalava Bay. The dry season, roughly May-Oct, is the window worth trying.
Water is mixed, boardshorts all year, coral around the island. Come for the diving and the island, pack a kite in case, and do not build a kite trip around it. Not a place to learn, and no school base here is on record.

The wind

Direction

Wind is less reliable than at Diego Suarez and Sakalava Bay because the Tsaratanana range partly shelters the island. The dry season, roughly May-Oct, is the better window.

A weather model covers this place, but its figures do not sit with the wind strength this record states, so no season is drawn from them. They are in the table above, and no riding season is on record either.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month.

Rider tips

  • Take the ferry from Ankify; that is how you get onto the island.
  • Read the forecast before you commit a day to it. The Tsaratanana range shelters Nosy Be and the wind is patchier than at Diego Suarez.
  • Aim for the dry season, roughly May-Oct, if you want any chance of wind.
  • Pack boardshorts only, and watch the coral around the island.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Nosy Be?

The dry season, roughly May to October, is the more viable window, since wind is less consistent than at Diego Suarez or Sakalava Bay.

Is Nosy Be suitable for beginners?

No; it's treated as a secondary, exploratory kite stop rather than a dedicated beginner or school base.

What is the wind like at Nosy Be?

Wind is thermal but less reliable than nearby Diego Suarez spots because the Tsaratanana mountain range partially shields the island from the trade winds.
