Paje

Paje is Zanzibar's kitesurfing epicenter: a long stretch of white-sand beach on the south-east coast backed by a wide, reef-protected lagoon that flips from ankle-deep flat water at low tide to mild chop and small kickers at high tide. It hosts the island's densest concentration of kite schools (including Zanzibar Kite Paradise, Aquaholics, Paje by Kite and Kite Centre Zanzibar), making it the go-to base for beginners through freestyle riders.

notesThe flat, shallow lagoon is ideal for beginner lessons and first independent sessions; freestyle clinics run in the lagoon chop at higher tide; reef wave breaks further out suit advanced riders, especially during the Dec-Apr swell season.

Monthly wind statistics

Station: Kiwengwa Duotone Pro Center / Zanzibar (Windfinder (observed station), ~~34 (Kiwengwa is on the same east-coast reef system, north of Paje) km) — No station at Paje itself; using Kiwengwa Duotone Pro Center (~34km up the same east-coast reef, short ~4.4-year record 3/2022-7/2026) in preference to Windfinder's Zanzibar Airport station (~32km away but opposite west coast, ~19-year record). Kiwengwa data shows Jan-Feb clearly windiest (34-47% in the 7-22kt bucket) and Apr-Jul surprisingly calm (71-72% dead calm, only 3-6% reaching 7-22kt) — this contradicts Paje's typical kusi (SE monsoon, roughly May-Oct) reputation reflected in the batch's known_best_months; likely a local siting/sheltering effect at Kiwengwa or an artifact of the short record. Cross-check against the longer-record Zanzibar Airport station (SE/SSE-dominant, 7-22kt bucket 59-74% nearly all year, i.e. reliably windy) at https://en.windfinder.com/windstatistics/ras_nungwi_zanzibar. Beaufort-≥4 probability not directly available (knot buckets only); raw buckets kept in wind_bucket_pct_0_1_7_22_34plus_kts. No water temperature reported.
