On the clock

13:00 · 15:00

Maestral peaks between 13:00 and 15:00 and mornings are usually too light. Burja and Jugo are synoptic and can blow at any hour. No onset time was measured at Fiesa itself.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Fiesa is a small bay a short walk out of Piran, with two protected lakes sitting right behind the beach and a coastal promenade running back into town. It kites, but the launch is tiny and stony and the water is chop and waves rather than a beginner lagoon.
The wind that works is NE-ENE-E Burja, and Fiesa earns its place as the sheltered corner intermediates fall back to when Bora is over 30 kt everywhere else. Learn where the wind dies at the foot of the cliffs before you need to know.
The beach is shallow and clear, with pebbles, concrete platforms, grass, pine shade, showers and rented sunbeds, which means swimmers and paid parking are part of the operating picture in season. No kite rule and no rescue setup is on record here, so ask a local before you rig.

Character

fills in: Maestral peaks between 13:00 and 15:00 and mornings are usually too light. Burja and Jugo are synoptic and can blow at any hour. No onset time was measured at Fiesa itself.

Typical strength

Maestral runs 5-15 knots and occasionally 20. Burja averages 15-25 knots and reaches 40 in exceptional cases; Jugo averages 15-20 and can hit 30. Fiesa is named as the fallback once Burja is over 30. These are Piran Bay figures, not measured at the Fiesa launch.

Bora on this coast is strong and gusty. Fiesa is the protected bay intermediates use when it blows hard, with one catch: the wind dies at the foot of the cliffs.
June-September is the window named for Fiesa and Piran, and the Maestral that carries it is most frequent from March to September, turning up four or five days a week in summer. Burja and Jugo are both autumn-to-spring winds that still appear once or twice a week in summer.
The other reason to come is strong Burja over 30 knots, when Fiesa is the protected fallback: a synoptic event, not a daily thermal you can plan a trip around. Tramontana and Lebic hit the bay two or three times a season with gusts reported near 90 knots, and everything on the water stops.

Also on record

60 non-thermal windy days a year, with monthly averages around 4-5 kt. The figure explicitly excludes thermal wind and is indicative.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider: 12-14m for the 5-15 knot summer Maestral, 9m around 15-18, 7m for a 20-25 knot Burja, 5-6m once it is over 30. Derived from Piran Bay wind ranges; nothing is published for Fiesa itself.

Direction to shore

Side-shore. NE/ENE/E Bora works at the spot; check the exact angle at the launch locally.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

chop, small waves and medium waves in stronger wind; shallow swimming beach inside a small bay

Standing depth

Shallow along the beach itself, but no kiteable standing-depth area is on record.

Tides

The kite spot is tide-independent; northern Adriatic tide movement still exists regionally.

Temperature

25°C summer · 10°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts or shorty in summer; shorty or full suit in spring/autumn; thick winter wetsuit in winter.

Currents

The freshwater lake inlet makes for local temperature and current variation, unconfirmed at the launch itself.

12–27°C water
Shallow and pebbly, with concrete platforms, grass and pine shade above the water line, and clear water. The Fiesa lakes sit directly behind the beach: the larger one is connected to the sea, the smaller is freshwater. Nothing on record says either produces a current at the launch.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Intermediate and expert. The wider Piran Bay is considered beginner-friendly, but the Fiesa launch is not: rocks, almost no room to lay a kite out, chop and waves.

The scene

Rescue

No kite rescue at Fiesa is on record, and the wild section of the beach has no lifeguard supervision.

Launch

A small pebble and stone beach with concrete platforms and grass, near the hotels and the lakes. The part you actually launch from is rock and stone, and it is very tiny.

Hazards riders report 14

  • dead-wind zone at the base of the cliffs - avoid
  • shallow lagoon with variable depth
  • boat traffic and residential development nearby
  • rocky outcrops along the eastern shoreline
  • Very small launch/landing area
  • Rocks and stones on the beach and rocks/reefs in the water
  • Dead-wind zone at the foot of the cliffs
  • Strong Bora over 30 kt
  • Swimmers and beach users in the bathing season
  • No lifeguard supervision on the wild beach section
  • Ship/boat traffic in the Piran Bay area
  • Limited paid parking near the beach in summer
  • Burja launch and landing are awkward enough that many local kiters sit the wind out rather than ride it
  • Tramontana and Lebic squalls, two or three times a season, with gusts reported near 90 kt
Rules & access
2026: no Fiesa kite permit, launch corridor or seasonal kite ban is published. General Slovenian sea-navigation guidance keeps a 150 m swimming strip off natural beaches, requires vessels to stay 50 m outside the outer edge of marked bathing areas, and asks for a slow, perpendicular approach to shore. Check locally: a kiteboard can be read as a vessel under bathing-area enforcement.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Count on the bay washing you back to the beach rather than out to sea if your gear fails or you run out of legs.
  • Ask local riders or Chickenloop at Seča before riding Fiesa in Bora; the launch is small and the cliff shadow matters.
  • Stay off the beach in bathing hours unless a local confirms kiting is accepted and the sand is clear.
  • Wear booties for the stones on the beach and the rock in the water.
  • Do not learn here; the Fiesa launch is rated intermediate and above.
  • Keep Fiesa as your contingency spot and base at Seča, which has the documented school and support.

Getting there

Airport

Trieste Airport (TRS) is the nearest major international airport; Portorož Airport is close by but handles small aircraft only, with Ljubljana, Venice Marco Polo and Treviso as alternatives.
