thermal breeze

13:30 · 14:00 · 17:00

The summer thermal fills in during the early afternoon: transfers leave around 13:30-14:00 and sessions run to about 17:00. Bora and Scirocco are frontal and can blow at any hour, including overnight.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Lignano Sabbiadoro splits its kite year in two. From October to May you ride the Lignano beach itself without limits; in summer kitesurfing in front of the main beach is not allowed and everything moves out to Isola delle Conchiglie, an uninhabited sandbank near the Faro Rosso, reached by instructor motorboat.
The island is the reason to come: shallow for hundreds of metres, sandbanks, flat to choppy, and enough obstacle-free sand to rig and run the land drills.
Summer wind is the teaching kind, an afternoon sea breeze of 7-13 knots, with transfers leaving around 13:30-14:00 and riding until about 17:00. Outside summer it is Bora, sideshore, reported at 12-40 knots, with Scirocco as the other frontal option, and that is a different sport in 8.9 C water. Tide does not matter here.
What nobody states plainly is whether a rider who is not booked with a school can use the island in summer, so ask before you build a trip around it.

Typical strength

7-13 knots for the summer afternoon teaching breeze; 10-14 knots reported for summer thermals; 12-40 knots reported for winter Bora episodes

Thermal sea breeze for the summer lessons. Bora or Scirocco outside summer for the stronger days.
October to May you ride the Lignano beach itself without restriction, and that is the stronger half of the year for wind. In summer the beach is given over to bathers and practice moves out to Isola delle Conchiglie. Rideable wind across the year is generally put at 12-30 knots.
Island lessons run April to September on the afternoon thermal.

The quiver, in words

Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, no local measurement published. The 7-13 knot summer teaching breeze is 15-17 m territory or a foil, and a 12 m only works at the top of it. Ordinary rideable days across the 12-30 knot range sit on 9-12 m.A winter Bora at 25-40 knots is 5-7 m and a different day entirely.

Direction to shore

Southerly winds are onshore; Bora is sideshore.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The island is a lesson spot: shallow water, clean sand, room to walk a kite. Strong winter Bora and open water need more experience than that.

Rescue

+39 339 828 1513

The summer island sessions come with instructor cover and the RIB that ran the transfer; that boat is the rescue. No public rescue service is confirmed for the island. Tiliaventum ASD is based at Via Monte Ortigara 3M, Marina Punta Faro, +39 339 828 1513.

Launch

In summer, instructors run students and riders out by motorised RIB - under five minutes from the Lignano beach - to the uninhabited Isola delle Conchiglie, a few hundred metres off the Pontile Santa Monica near the Faro Rosso. Golden sand, shallow water for hundreds of metres, and a sea breeze that pushes back toward the beach.Out of season you rig and ride along the Lignano beach itself.

Space

Big on the island sand; the launch and landing area itself is reportedly medium.

Hazards riders report 10

  • bathers and beach crowding in summer
  • seasonal beach restrictions
  • summer kitesurfing forbidden in front of the main Lignano beach
  • boat access required for the island in summer school operations
  • bathers and tourist beach crowding on the main beach
  • strong and gusty Bora episodes in winter
  • very shallow sandbanks
  • current local rules should be checked before independent launch
  • Swimming, transit and any recreational water activity are forbidden directly beneath the Faro Rosso pier (Pontile Santa Monica).
  • A separate bathing-restricted zone applies near Punta Marinetta at the west end of Lignano beach.
Rules & access
2026: from October to May kitesurfing runs without limitations along the Lignano beach. In summer it is not allowed on the stretch in front of the main beach, and practice moves to the nearby uninhabited Isola delle Conchiglie with qualified instructors, reached by their motorboat. Swimming, transit and any recreational water activity are forbidden directly beneath the Faro Rosso pier (Pontile Santa Monica), and a separate bathing-restricted zone applies near Punta Marinetta at the west end of the beach. Every published wording describes the island as instructor-led; no text grants or denies access to an independent rider, so confirm before building a trip around it.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Book summer sessions through a Lignano school or association; the island transfer runs on their motorboat.
  • Do not rig in front of the main Lignano beach in summer unless a current local authorization says you can.
  • If you are learning, take the afternoon sea breeze at 7-13 knots rather than a Bora day.
  • Ask on the day whether independent riders can use the island launch; the published wording only ever mentions qualified instructors.
  • Stay out from under the Faro Rosso pier at Pontile Santa Monica, where swimming, transit and any water activity are forbidden.
  • Come between October and May if you want wind rather than a lesson; that is when the beach is open and the Bora and Scirocco arrive.
