The summer day has a sea-breeze shape, but a weak one: hourly averages sit flat until late morning, climb through the early afternoon and peak between 14:00 and 17:00, then fade after 19:00. Bora and Scirocco days ignore that clock and can blow through the night.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Bibione is a big upper-Adriatic resort beach in San Michele al Tagliamento, Veneto, and the kite case is simple: the sand runs for miles, the entry is shallow and gradual, and the water sits between flat and chop.
Summer is when the wind shows up, thermal breeze plus north-easterly regimes, though nobody has published much in the way of Bibione-specific wind statistics beyond a July average. The same months fill the beach with loungers and swimmers right down to the waterline.
Maritime rules in the Caorle district put kite transit and landing into dedicated corridors during the bathing season, so an independent rider has to establish the permitted access before pumping. Off-season, or early in the morning, the beach turns back into what it looks like on the map: enormous and empty.
Skip peak beach hours in July and August unless you are going out with an authorized school.

Typical strength

Most days here are too light to ride. A 2015-2024 hourly reanalysis of the grid point off the beach averages 5.8 kt across June-September afternoons and puts only about 4% of those afternoon hours at 12 kt or more; October to April afternoons reach that mark about 9% of the time. The sessions come from the exceptions, a Bora out of the north-east or a Scirocco from the south-east, which run in the mid-teens and above. Model values over open water, not a beach measurement.

more regular in the warm season when thermal breezes and NE regimes are present
Summer is the window for warm water and for the thermal breeze, not for stronger wind: the reanalysed monthly means barely move across the year, 4.9-5.8 kt every month, with March, April and September marginally ahead of midsummer.
What summer adds is the number of afternoons with any breeze at all, and it is also when the bathing band and the crowd close the beach to launching. Nearby Brussa gets Bora from the north-east and Scirocco from the south-east, the upper-Adriatic pattern, and no Bibione beach station series has been published.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

Lifeguard cover here is a bathing service, not a kite one. Concession beaches and the free stretches must have guards on from 09:00 to 19:00 between the second Saturday of June and the second Sunday of September, and 10:00-12:30 plus 13:30-18:00 at the two ends of the season, with at least one manned tower every 300 m at the quiet times (2024 Caorle rules).
At sea, 1530 reaches the Coast Guard free from any phone and 112 is the general emergency number. Nothing kite-specific, and no boat on call for an independent rider.

Launch

Direct launch from the free stretches of Bibione's sandy beach: with nobody swimming there you may take off and land without manoeuvring, steering as square to the shore as you can and keeping the kite low until the 500 m limit. In front of a concession you need the authorized kite corridor instead, recognisable by two lines of orange buoys and the white-flagged 80 cm buoys at its seaward mouth. The main watersports school beach sits east of Piazzale Zenith, opposite Lido dei Pini.

Space

The beach is about 300 m wide and runs for miles, with a big launch and landing area. In summer the loungers and the tourists cut usable rigging and walking space down hard.

Hazards riders report 7

  • swimmers and loungers pack the beach in summer
  • shorebreak/small waves complicating the first meters when wind is strong
  • limited rigging space in peak season
  • very crowded beach in June, July and August
  • sunlounger fields and limited practical rigging space in peak summer
  • shorebreak and short waves make the first meters awkward when the wind builds
  • must keep clear of swimmers and marked bathing zones
Rules & access
1 May to 30 September: the sea within 500 m of the Caorle maritime district shore, which includes Bibione, is reserved for bathing, and transit, launching and landing by kitesurf inside that band is prohibited except through an authorized corridor (Caorle bathing-safety ordinance 24/2024, coordinated text).
From a free stretch of beach with no bathers on it, take-off and landing are allowed without doing manoeuvres, on a course as perpendicular to the shore as you can hold and with the kite kept down until you are past the 500 m limit.
In front of a concession you use the kite corridor instead: minimum 30 m wide at the sand, widening to 80 m at 100 m out, running the full 500 m, marked by two lines of orange buoys 20 m apart with white flags on 80 cm end buoys and a sign reading 'CORRIDOIO RISERVATO ALL'ATTIVITA' DI KITESURF - DIVIETO DI BALNEAZIONE'; the corridor is free for anyone to use and swimming inside it is banned.
The bathing season itself is set nationally as the third Saturday of May to the third Sunday of September; the 2025 San Michele al Tagliamento beach-activity ordinance classifies tavole con aquilone as sailing craft and ties beach activity to the Caorle maritime rules, and the comune published 23 May-27 September as the 2026 season.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride early morning or in the shoulder season if you want clear rigging space.
  • Find the active kitesurf corridor and the bathing-zone markers before you rig: the 2026 bathing season runs 23 May-27 September.
  • Stay off the beach at peak hours in July and August unless you launch through an authorized school or a managed launch.
  • For emptier sand, drive to Brussa, Foci del Tagliamento or Lignano Sabbiadoro.
  • Take the ATVO shuttle from Venice or Treviso if you are not driving; by rail it is Portogruaro or Latisana plus a bus.
  • Look for two lines of orange buoys with white flags on the big end buoys: that is the kite corridor, anyone may use it, and it runs the full 500 m out.
  • Do not plan a trip around summer wind. The reanalysed averages are lowest in June and July, and the windier afternoons fall in the cold months when the beach is empty anyway.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Bibione?

June through September is generally regarded as the best window, when thermal breezes and north-easterly regimes are more present.

Is Bibione suitable for beginners?

The shallow, gradually sloping sandy beach suits beginners and freeriders, especially when the summer beach crowds are lower.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

A 2026 Caorle-district ordinance reserves the first 500 m from shore for bathing from 1 May to 30 September, requiring kitesurfers to use dedicated corridors.

What is the water like?

Water is flat to choppy with small short waves when the wind strengthens, over a gradual sandy entry with no meaningful tide effect.

What are the main hazards?

Heavy beach crowding with swimmers and loungers in July and August is the main constraint, along with limited rigging space in peak season.
