Lo Stagnone, Sicily

• The lagoon is about 7 km long by 3 km wide, averages 1-2 m deep with areas of 20-30 cm and roughly 1 m maximum in the riding zones - which is why it is world-class for freestyle and useless (and illegal) for foiling.
• Summer wind is thermal and afternoon-loaded: it fills in around 12:00-14:00 at 12-22 knots and builds through the afternoon; Scirocco arrives in 3-4 day sequences at 30-40 knots. Local schools rate the 9 km WRF grid on Windguru as the only model that resolves the lagoon thermal.
• Named eating options at the lagoon end, not just 'kite-centre bars': Santa Maria Restaurant Lounge (beachfront), Ristorante Bar Saro (arancine, cannoli), Le Caserie (modern Trapani cooking), 48 Trattoria (fish, good value). Sunset aperitivo happens in the 'kite village' kiosks and beach clubs within walking distance of the centres.
• Roughly 30 kitesurf schools operate in the lagoon - this is an industrial-scale kite village, not a handful of centres, and it is the reason the environmental dispute over the reserve keeps recurring.

Before you book

• The airport bus is the lagoon bus. Autoservizi Salemi's Marsala-Birgi-Palermo line is routed 'VIA SP21' on most departures - the same coast road the kite centres sit on - with roughly 20 weekday runs from 01:00 to 22:00 and a 30-minute Marsala-to-airport time. • Fixed taxi tariff from Trapani-Birgi: EUR 35 to Trapani, EUR 35 to Marsala. Private kite-centre transfers cost EUR 45 from Trapani for up to 4 people, EUR 130-170 from Palermo.
• Helmet and approved flotation device are legally mandatory for kiting in the reserve, not a school preference (Ordinanza 01/2019); rental of the pair is EUR 8/day at Kiteboarding Club Sicily.
• Launch is a staged, buoyed-corridor procedure: corridors at least 40 m wide at the shore widening to 100 m, orange buoys every 20 m, walk out to 100 m, body-drag 100-200 m, ride beyond 200 m. Powered launching from docks is banned.
• Day-pass economics on the lagoon: KiteClub Marsala EUR 8/day (EUR 60/month, EUR 160/year), storage EUR 3/day or EUR 30/month, rescue EUR 15-20 per use; Duotone Pro Center EUR 10/day access.
• Mozia island (Fondazione Whitaker): EUR 12 adult, EUR 6 student, free under 5, including museum and archaeological area. Open 09:30-18:30 April-October, 09:00-15:00 November-March; boats leave from several points on the Stagnone shore every ~30 minutes, 10-15 minute crossing.
• Lagoon accommodation is a school-brokered apartment market: one operator alone (Kite Season) lists 22 units at EUR 75-145/night, 0.2-3 km from the water, nearly all with AC and WiFi and all with free kite-centre access. Book through the school, not an OTA.

• Wind probability by season from spot statistics: 69-79% of days windy June-September, 58-69% April-May and October - which matches the Reddit trip report of 8 rideable days out of 11 in June rather than contradicting it.

• Lo Stagnone was a major European windsurfing hub for decades before kitesurfing arrived, built on the same shallow, flat, reliably windy water and thermal effects that made the surrounding area a historic salt-production centre - the salt pans and windmills lining the lagoon date back centuries.
