Sardinia - Punta Trettu
Punta Trettu is one of Europe's best flat, shallow lagoons for learning and progressing, but it is a spot, not a town: there is a kite village with an on-site bar/kitchen and little else right there, so real evenings and errands happen 10-20 minutes away in Sant'Antioco or Carbonia. It suits beginners, families, foilers, and anyone chasing guaranteed flat water in a quiet, undeveloped corner of Sardinia. It is not for wave riders, people wanting resort nightlife, or anyone hoping to go car-free - this is rural Sulcis-Iglesiente, Sardinia's old mining region, not the Costa Smeralda.

Editor's brief
Punta Trettu is a regulated kite zone, not a beach. A written spot regulation splits the water at a natural offshore sandbank: left side free-riders, right side authorised schools only. You may launch only inside the marked consortium area, and the harbour frontage, the shore in front of the municipal car park and the buoyed Sant'Antioco navigation channel are prohibited, enforced by police and Coast Guard fines. The wind over-delivers by 5-10 knots against forecast from April to October, because the Mistral is compressed through the Sant'Antioco strait and thermally reinforced over the shallow warm lagoon. It builds through the day: afternoons are the session, mornings the forgiving beginner window. Mistral (NW) rules April-September; Scirocco (SE) peaks in April, September and October and gives the mirror-flat water the spot is famous for. Roughly 75% of days are windy June-September, 12-40 knots, 15-28 in summer. It is further from Cagliari than everyone says. Road routing gives ~95 km and 1h15-1h30 from the CAG terminal, not the ~50 km printed everywhere - that is the straight-line distance. KiteGeneration's '80 km' is the distance to Carbonia. There IS a train, contrary to the previous record: Trenitalia Cagliari (and Elmas Aeroporto) to Carbonia Serbariu, about 1 hour, about EUR 4, roughly 8 direct pairs a day into a purpose-built rail-and-bus interchange. It just stops 19 km short of the lagoon. Fill that last 19 km with a EUR 90 private transfer from Kite Village Sardegna, a KiteGeneration shuttle, or a rental car quoted from EUR 12/day at the airport. A car is still the honest answer: the spot has one bar, no shop, no pharmacy and no ATM, and the comune's only bank branch is a single Banco di Sardegna in San Giovanni Suergiu, 8-10 minutes away. Medical reality: Pronto Soccorso at Ospedale Sirai, Via dell'Ospedale, Loc. Sirai, Carbonia (0781 6683472), 19-22 km and 25-30 minutes away. No trauma centre in the Sulcis - specialist cases go to Cagliari, ~80 km. Rescue at the spot is a paid callout, discounted only via the schools' Rescue Vouchers, with lifeguard cover April-October. - The spot is a kite village plus a lagoon - one bar, no shop, no pharmacy, no ATM. Nearest cash is the single Banco di Sardegna branch in San Giovanni Suergiu, 8-10 min away.
- Cagliari airport is ~95 km by road, not the ~50 km often quoted - budget 1h15-1h30, not 45 minutes.
- You cannot ride where you like: two zones split by a sandbank (left free-riders, right schools only), launch only from the marked consortium area, and the harbour front, the shore by the municipal car park and the buoyed navigation channel are off-limits with Coast Guard fines.
- You cannot rent gear straight after a course - every operator tests that you ride independently, and ProKite holds your ID card during the rental.
- A EUR 10/12-month club membership with RC insurance is compulsory before you touch anything; rescue callouts are chargeable.
- In high season the launch is about 700 m from the free car park, along the spit - a real walk with a board and two kites.
- Forecasts under-read this bay by 5-10 knots. Size down, especially on Mistral afternoons.
- The car park is free, unattended and out of sight of the water for a whole session; take valuables with you.
- Book kite-camp rooms early for July-August - on-site capacity is a handful of suites and one studio.

- How many riders are typically in the school zone on a windy July or August afternoon, and do the three or four schools coordinate a rotation or cap? This is the fact that would settle the 'crowded and small' complaint for good.

Itinerary idea
Classic plan: fly into Cagliari, spend 5-7 days kiting Punta Trettu based at the kite village or in Sant'Antioco, then add 2-3 days for Cagliari city, Nora ruins, Chia beaches, and a day-trip or overnight on Isola di San Pietro (Carloforte) via the Calasetta ferry.
