Le Saline sits on the Gulf of Olbia a few kilometres from the airport, and that is the practical reason to come: land at OLB and you can be rigging 6-15 minutes later.
The kite beach runs alongside the Saline pond, flat on the pond side, open sea on the other, turning to chop and small waves as the wind builds. The wind list is long, Levante, Scirocco, Grecale, Tramontana and Maestrale/Mistral, but the one that matters for learning is the thermal Scirocco: side-on, around 12-20 kt, 9-13m kites.
Mistral works too and is at its most frequent in spring and summer, but it comes in gusty and is not the day for a first lesson. Sardinia Kite School and S-LOOP both work the beach and there is an authorized launching corridor, so ask before you pump. Nothing here is documented as standing depth.
The pond makes people assume shallow water everywhere, and how far the shallow actually extends at normal summer levels is unconfirmed. May to September is the season, and July and August bring people without ever making this a swimmers' beach.

Character

mixed

fills in: No precise summer thermal timing has been published for Le Saline.

Typical strength

Thermal Scirocco days run force 3-5, roughly 12-20 kt, and that is what most sessions here happen in. Mistral is the stronger wind, force 4-7, and gusty with it. Indicative ranges; no measured local average exists for the beach.

Good enough to learn in on thermal Scirocco and Grecale. It is a gusty beach, so a strong Mistral wants respect.
A summer learning spot, driven by thermal wind. Mistral works year-round and is at its most frequent in spring and summer; Scirocco shows in spring and summer too but lands more often in autumn and winter.

Also on record

12-20

The quiver, in words

9-13m covers a 75-85 kg rider on the thermal days, 12-13m when it is barely filling in and 9m once it settles around 20 kt. A strong Mistral is 7-9m territory. Derived from the wind ranges rather than a local recommendation, and no school publishes sizing by rider weight.

Direction to shore

side-on for Scirocco; Mistral is reported as side-shore/side-onshore and Scirocco cross-shore/cross-onshore.

Dominant direction

Levante, Scirocco with a thermal component, and Mistral dominate. Scirocco, Levante, Grecale and Tramontana all work; side-on thermal Scirocco is the strong one, with Grecale close behind.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

flat, chop and small waves by wind direction; beach plus nearby pond/lagoon

Standing depth

Summer thermal lessons run in low or high water. How far the shallow actually extends is unconfirmed.

Tides

Mild Mediterranean tidal impact; no spot-specific tide limitation is published.

Temperature

25.8°C summer · 13.8°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or shorty in July-August for many riders; long wetsuit in winter and cooler shoulder months.

Currents

Current is reportedly minimal, unconfirmed. It is likely to matter more out toward the open sea, and nothing has been measured locally.

Rescue

Sardinia Kite School runs radios and assistance during its lessons. S-LOOP keeps a support dinghy for lift and recovery, uses radio helmets, holds a safety corridor and maintains communications with the Coast Guard as the reference authority for the area. Neither arrangement covers an independent rider, and there is no standing public kite rescue on this beach.

Beach launch at Le Saline, beside the pond and a short walk from the road and parking, with an authorized kite launching corridor.

Hazards riders report 6

  • shallow salt-marsh bottom can be uneven
  • sensitive wetland ecosystem - stay to designated access areas
  • Gusty wind.
  • Sensitive pond/wetland setting: stay to designated beach/corridor access.
  • The shallow areas are not mapped, so do not assume the whole spot is standing depth.
  • Small waves and chop can develop depending on wind strength and direction.
Rules & access
2026: the Le Saline/Punta Saline kite beach has a designated launching corridor and is authorized for kite launching. No municipal ordinance text specific to Olbia/Punta Saline has been confirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Set the navigation to Le Saline near Olbia, not the Le Saline at Stintino: different beach, other end of Sardinia.
  • Ask at Sardinia Kite School or S-LOOP where the authorized corridor runs before you pump.
  • Learn on the side-on thermal Scirocco or the Grecale, and leave the gusty Mistral days until you ride upwind.
  • Do not assume the water is shallow just because there is a pond behind you.
  • Fly into OLB for the shortest transfer on the island: about 5 km, a 6-minute bus to Spiaggia Le Saline.
