On the clock

13:00 · 18:00

At Mugoni the northerly summer thermal is usable roughly 13:00-18:00, sometimes later. Onset for the other Alghero beaches is unconfirmed.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Alghero works as a group of beaches rather than one launch. The four names that matter are Lido / San Giovanni in town, Mugoni in the Porto Conte bay, Poglina and La Speranza to the south, and Porto Ferro to the northwest. Lido is the easy one: sandy, gently shelving, fine for a first season.
Mugoni is the protected bay, shared with windsurf and wing foil, and it goes gusty when Maestrale is disturbed by Ponente. Porto Ferro and La Speranza are the exposed wave choices, and Porto Ferro is kiteable by expert riders only.
June to September is the warm-water season, though the local surfers and kiters keep going into autumn and winter, when the beaches are less crowded and the swells more active. Wind direction, launch legality and the crowd change beach by beach, so ask a local school which one is on before committing to the drive.

Typical strength

10-25 knots across the Alghero beaches. At Mugoni the summer northerly thermal adds 8-10 knots on top of the base wind.

Consistent as a rule, with Mugoni the exception: gusty when Maestrale is disturbed by Ponente, and messy under-shore in Grecale.
June-September is the main Alghero kitesurf season. The local spots are also used in autumn and winter, especially when beaches are less busy, with Porto Ferro and La Speranza preferred by wave surfers.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Lido di Alghero has a sandy seabed and water that deepens gently, which is why it is the beginner beach of the group. At Mugoni the bay stays flat to lightly chopped, 10-30 cm of chop in the northerly winds, but no standing-depth measurement has been published; Porto Ferro, La Speranza and the harbour launch are unconfirmed.

Tides

Tidal influence at Alghero is relatively limited; water level remains fairly constant through the day.

Temperature

24.9°C summer · 13.8°C winter

Wetsuit

Short wetsuit or boardshorts are normally enough in summer; long wetsuit is appropriate in spring, autumn and winter.

Currents

Strong currents at Porto Ferro and La Speranza are unconfirmed.

15–26°C water
The Alghero record covers a cluster rather than one uniform launch: Lido/Mugoni are more sheltered and sandy, while Porto Ferro and La Speranza are wave-oriented and more exposed.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginner suitability depends on which beach you pick. Lido is the good one to learn on, wide, sandy-bottomed and gently shelving, and Mugoni suits learners and improvers too. Porto Ferro is kiteable only for expert riders, because the waves, currents and exposure need preparation.

Launch

Several Alghero launches are used: the initial and final stretches of Lido/San Giovanni near town, Mugoni in Porto Conte bay, Poglina/La Speranza south of town, and Porto Ferro northwest of Alghero. In summer, crowding pushes kiters to a specific kite area at San Giovanni Beach, about 5 minutes from Lido, and to Ninfee Beach, a designated kite zone about 1 km from Mugoni. Mugoni has a paid summer car park with an equipped area called Le Ninfe, giving shade, a freshwater rinse and beach access. There is also a sandy kite beach by Alghero's yacht/fishing harbor, with parking across the access road.

Space

varies by beach; Lido is the broadest city option, Mugoni has a long but narrow beach, and Porto Ferro is a long wild beach.

Hazards riders report 16

  • sea urchins on rocky seabeds at some beaches
  • strong currents at exposed spots (Porto Ferro, La Speranza)
  • summer crowding shifts kite zones to designated areas
  • Porto Ferro is expert-only on a kite: the waves, currents and exposure need strong technique.
  • Mugoni can become gusty with Maestrale disturbed by Ponente, and very holey in full Ponente.
  • Grecale at Mugoni can be disturbed close to shore, making return to the beach awkward.
  • Libeccio at Mugoni can bring shore-break and 50-60 cm chop.
  • Summer beach crowding and bathing zones may restrict practical launching at city beaches.
  • Sensitive protected coast exists around Porto Conte / Capo Caccia - Isola Piana; respect access and nature rules.
  • sea urchins on the shallow rocky seabed at La Speranza
  • Porto Ferro is kiteable for expert riders only, given waves, currents and exposure
  • Mugoni can become gusty when Maestrale is disturbed by Ponente, and very holey in full Ponente
  • Grecale at Mugoni can be disturbed close to shore, making return to the beach awkward
  • Libeccio at Mugoni can bring shore-break and 50-60 cm chop
  • summer beach crowding and bathing zones may restrict practical launching at city beaches
  • sensitive protected coast around Porto Conte / Capo Caccia - Isola Piana; respect access and nature rules
Rules & access
2026: navigation, mooring and bathing along the Capo Caccia - Isola Piana protected coast are governed by Capitaneria di Porto ordinance no. 29/2026, and ordinance no. 50 of 12 August 2026 re-modulates the moorings, on a trial basis, in the water off Cala dell'Olandese, the Calette del Lazzaretto, Cala Monte Tundu and Cala del Rosso. Neither text is known to carry a kitesurf clause, and no Alghero kite corridor map is published. In summer the practical kite areas are Ninfee Beach, about 1 km from Mugoni, and San Giovanni Beach for the town stretch. General Italian bathing-season rules still apply: no kite transit through swimmer zones, and use of authorized corridors where they exist. Check the current ordinance locally before launching.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Beginners: use Mugoni or Lido with a certified local school, and stay off Porto Ferro and La Speranza in wave conditions.
  • In summer the harbour kite zone shifts to San Giovanni Beach, about 5 minutes away, and to Ninfee Beach, a designated kite zone about 1 km from Mugoni.
  • At Mugoni, watch for gusty or holey Maestrale under Ponente influence, and for disturbed Grecale close to shore on the way back in.
  • Check the current beach ordinances and marked corridors before a summer session.
  • Keep a car: the point of Alghero is changing beach with the wind, and they sit 10-25 minutes apart.
  • Pack 9-12m for summer and 6-9m for the winter storms.
  • Porto Conte and Capo Caccia sit inside a marine protected area, and the maritime ordinance covering navigation, mooring and bathing there is reissued: read the current one rather than last year's.
  • Mugoni parking is paid in summer and the Le Ninfe area next to it has shade and a freshwater rinse.

Route

Fly to Alghero-Fertilia, then use taxi, bus or rental car; a car is the practical option for switching among Lido, Mugoni, Porto Ferro and La Speranza.

Transfer

10-25 minutes depending on the beach. Porto Ferro is about 15 km from Alghero airport and about 20-23 km from Alghero itself.

Cost level

medium, higher in July-August

Staying

Alghero town has the most restaurants, apartments, B&Bs and services; rural or beach-side lodging around Porto Conte/Mugoni shortens access to the northern beaches.

No-wind days

Alghero old town, Neptune's Grotto, Capo Caccia, Porto Conte natural park, boat trips, SUP, kayaking, snorkeling, diving, beaches and local food/wine.

FAQ

Is it suitable for beginners?

It depends on the beach: Lido is called ideal for beginners because of its sandy, gently shelving water, and Mugoni is also popular with learners, while Porto Ferro is kiteable only for expert riders because of waves, currents and exposure.

What is the wind like?

The area is used with a mix of Maestrale, Grecale, Tramontana, Ponente and Libeccio plus a summer thermal breeze, typically 10-25 knots, with June-September the main season.

Are there kite schools or rental?

Shore Wind operates at Mugoni, and other Alghero kite and windsurf operators are listed by Kiteguide.

What are the main hazards?

Porto Ferro's waves, currents and exposure make it expert-only, Mugoni can turn gusty or disturbed under certain wind angles, and sea urchins are reported on some rocky seabeds.
