The thermal reinforcement that makes the spot's reputation builds around midday and peaks through the afternoon on clear spring and summer days, adding 5-10 knots over the models; on those days a forecast of 5-6 knots from the northwest can still turn into a session, and the wind eases again towards evening.

The spot

Punta Trettu is a sand spit in the shallow lagoon between south-west Sardinia and Sant'Antioco, in the municipality of San Giovanni Suergiu near Matzaccara. The water is flat and sandy, knee-to-waist deep over most of the school side, and a natural sandbank splits the teaching zone from the independent riders' zone, so nobody is learning a water start in your landing area.

Wind seasons

Season runs April to October: NW Maestrale thermals in spring and summer, SE Scirocco later on, usually stronger than the models call it because thermal and venturi effects add 5-10 knots on clear days.

The shallow water is the hazard here, and falls in knee-deep water over firm sand have produced serious ankle and knee injuries.

Facilities and rules

It is not a resort beach. Food, shops, beds are spread between Matzaccara, San Giovanni Suergiu, Carbonia and Sant'Antioco, and without a car you are stuck. Independent riders check in at a kite center, carry the third-party liability insurance Italian law requires, learn the zone map, and stay clear of the boat channel and the fishermen's zones.

15-25 knots is the everyday working range, 15-28 knots through summer. Figures quoted for the whole year stretch to 12-40 knots. Winter Tramontana is the outlier and can pass 40 knots, reportedly above 50.

Generally steady in the lagoon in Mistral/Maestrale, with local thermal/venturi reinforcement on clear or slightly cloudy days; Scirocco is cleanly channelled, though it can also be gusty at the main spot.

Main season is April-October, which is also when the schools and their rescue boats work; one center opens in March, and the windy season as a whole can run March-November.

On clear or slightly cloudy days the Mistral comes in 5-10 knots stronger than the models call it. Windy days run about 70-75% in March-November and around 75% in June-September.

Rescue

What cover exists depends on which operator you are with and on the time of year. Kite Village runs motorboat rescue during school opening hours across its April-October season. ProKite keeps a boat available for recoveries and gives the service free to its members. Punta Trettu Kite Center ties rescue to lifeguard working hours and may charge independent riders a fee or a voucher.

Kitesurfing is allowed only in the designated zones at Punta Trettu Kite Beach, and riding outside them draws fines from the maritime police and the Coast Guard. The water is split in two by the natural sandbank: standing with your back to the northwest, the left side is the riding area for independent riders and the right side is the teaching area for authorized schools.

Navigation restrictions

Kiting is not allowed in the navigation channel that serves Sant'Antioco port, nor on the water in front of the small harbour. 2020, still the reference in the 2025 beach-safety ordinance: the leisure-craft ordinance no. 25/2020 of the Sant'Antioco maritime district, whose waters begin at Punta Trettu, allows kitesurfing for riders over 14 in daylight only, makes a certified helmet and an approved flotation aid compulsory at all times, and bans riding within 200 m of beaches, more than one nautical mile out, and within 500 m of harbour mouths, jetties, fish farms, fishing-gear markers, navigation marks and diver floats. 2025: kitesurf, windsurf and wing foil are permanently banned inside the lagoon's navigable channel and in a 50 m strip either side of it (ordinance 26/2025).

Launching and offshore

2026 operator rules: check in at an official kite center and sign the daily sheet, carry the third-party liability insurance required by Italian law, use a leash, keep lines wound when the kite is not in use, no jumping close to the beach, and only schools holding a municipal permit may teach. 2026 high-season launching is only at the end of the headland, about 700 m from the parking area; stay at least 200 m off the shore, do not cross the marked boat channel about 500 m out, and respect the fishermen's zone restrictions from 1 October to 31 May.

Insurance and site access

Insurance and site access are handled differently by each center: ProKite Sardegna A.S.D. membership costs EUR 10 and includes personal insurance plus use of the showers, changing rooms, wash-down area and wifi; Punta Trettu Kite Center folds membership and third-party insurance into its course prices; KiteGeneration advertises free entry to its area with no card.

Rescue and facilities

Rescue vouchers for independent riders were tied to an official April-October season in 2022 and that framing has not been updated since. Municipal ordinances issued in 2026 for Punta Trettu cover kite events (no. 20/2026 for a kite race, no. 23/2026 for a big-air event); no standing municipal ordinance text defining the zone boundaries was found. Dogs are not allowed on the beach apart from police, rescue and guide dogs, and there are no public toilets.

Do not judge the day from raw model forecasts on clear Mistral days: 5-10 knots of thermal and venturi on top is normal, and a 5-6 knot northwest forecast can still turn into a session.
Go early for the calm beginner water, or wait for the afternoon if you want the thermal at full strength.
Budget EUR 10 for the 2026 club card at one of the schools; it covers the personal insurance and the showers, and third-party liability cover is a legal requirement here.
Plan the 700 m walk from the parking to the high-season launch at the end of the headland, and carry water and sun cover for it.

Cagliari Elmas (CAG) is the nearest major airport; local schools also mention Alghero and Olbia as alternatives around 2.5-3.5 hours by car.

By car from Cagliari, take the SS130 toward Villamassargia/Carbonia, keep going toward Carbonia/San Giovanni Suergiu and follow signs for Matzaccara/Punta Trettu. Public transport gets you as far as Carbonia Serbariu; from there it is a taxi, an arranged pickup or a local transfer. Come with a car if you can.

There are B&Bs and houses within about 600 m, apartments or villas at Matzaccara about 5 minutes by car, hotels or restaurants about 10 minutes out, and everything else in San Giovanni Suergiu, Carbonia or Sant'Antioco.The kite centers rent or arrange rooms and apartments, and sell kite packages.There are no authorized campsites at Punta Trettu; camper parking on municipal ground next to the schools is reportedly tolerated.
