The beach and wind

Maddalena Spiaggia, Petrol Beach to everyone who kites there, sits at Capoterra just southwest of Cagliari, and it is where the city goes in summer once Poetto shuts to kites. The wind is a thermal out of the S-SE that builds after midday, often 10-20 knots, and it wants hot, sunny, high-pressure weather to show up at all. Mistral is the wrong wind here: offshore and gusty.

Conditions and skill level

The sand is easy and the water flat to choppy, with a marked launch corridor you are expected to use, because swimmers sit both upwind and downwind of it in July and August. Beginners should be with a school in high season, and independent riders need to hold upwind to get in and out of the corridor. The setting is industrial, with oil and gas ground behind the beach and tankers offshore, though the beach and water themselves are reported clean.

Seaweed turns up seasonally and it is the beginners who suffer it. Come between June and early September for the thermal, which reportedly runs on 60-80% of days.

2026: Maddalena Spiaggia is treated locally as the official kite area for Cagliari and Capoterra, and its launch corridor must be respected. In summer you are expected to enter through the approved launch area and stay inside it until you are roughly 200 m off the beach, which also means being able to ride upwind to get back in.

Season and windows

Poetto is the winter spot; its winter window is given both as 1 October-30 April and as 30 September-30 April, with Maddalena covering the summer half, quoted both as 1 May-30 September and as 30 May to September.

No municipal or Capitaneria ordinance text is published, and the Capoterra ordinance register has nothing on the beach.
