The spot

Poetto is Cagliari's city beach and a genuine kite spot, but the season is upside down: the schools ride it as a winter and low-season beach, because there is no launch lane on the main shore and in summer the sand belongs to swimmers. The usual launch is the 6th bus stop by the Il Nilo kiosk, wide enough to rig and with parking a minute away.

The water is open beach with chop and waves rather than flat training water: Scirocco and Levante build the waves and the shorebreak, while Mistral comes off the land on this side of the bay. Moderate days work for a beginner with a school. Strong east or southeast days and anything over 30 knots do not.

Summer alternatives

From May to September the answer is not Poetto at all, and the schools move to La Maddalena Spiaggia, also called Petrol Beach, or to Punta Trettu. The pedigree is real, though: the Comune di Cagliari put the 6th stop at the centre of the 2024 Sardinia Kiteboard Grand Slam and Kite Foil World Series world championship.

8-35 knots is the band quoted locally; anything over 30 knots here is hard work even for experienced riders.

Poetto is a low-season spot. The kite window most often given is 1 October to 30 April, with the summer riding moved to La Maddalena Spiaggia from 1 May to 30 September; a tighter version of the same idea is mid-March to mid-May plus mid-September to the end of October, with everything from June to the end of August off entirely because the beach is packed and there is no launch lane.

Wind conditions

Scirocco and Levante are the most frequent winds and the ones that raise the waves, averaging 10-20 kt and more when a strong SE passage comes through. The angle you want is side-on from E through SSE, which keeps space and margin between you and the bathing areas. Maestrale is irregular here and blows offshore.

2026: the municipality funded lifeguard cover on the free beaches of Poetto and Cala Mosca from 15 June to 15 September, daily 09:00-19:00, with four manned stations - Cala Mosca and the 1st, 4th and 6th bus stops. The 6th stop is the usual kite launch, so in high summer there are lifeguards standing exactly where kiters would rig, though that is bather rescue and not a kite service. Outside those dates and hours there is no rescue cover for kiters, and no paid or club rescue arrangement was found. Emergency numbers are 1530 and 112.

Launch

The 6th bus stop by the Il Nilo kiosk is the winter launch: wide beach, parking close. The two ends of the promenade are the other low-season choices. No fixed launch lane exists on the Cagliari side of Poetto, and none has been marked.

2025: Cagliari coastguard Ordinance n. 98/2025 prohibits transit by surf, windsurf, kitesurf, wing-foil and similar craft inside bathing zones unless authorised operators or the municipality have separated users with launch corridors; where transit is allowed, these craft must stay at least 60 m from swimmers and from vessels under way or moored. The same ordinance frames the Sardinian bathing season as summer 1 April-31 October and winter 1 November-31 March.

2026: no replacement Cagliari ordinance is published. What did change in 2026 is the beach cover: the municipality funded lifeguard service on the free Poetto and Cala Mosca beaches from 15 June to 15 September, 09:00-19:00, with four stations including the 6th stop that kiters use.

Practical kite window

In practice the main Poetto beach is treated as closed to kiting through the crowded months, with the kite window given locally as 1 October to 30 April, or more narrowly mid-March to mid-May plus mid-September to the end of October, because there is no launch lane on this beach and none has been set up.

Launch at the 6th bus stop by the Il Nilo kiosk: it is the widest rigging space and the parking is under a minute from the sand.
Come between October and April. From June to the end of August the beach is full and there is no lane to launch from.

Check what is legal on the day, because without an authorised corridor the only riding is outside the bathing setup.
Ask the riders already on the beach before you rig; there is no marked lane and the usable stretch moves with the season.
Skip Mistral days here unless you are fully at home with offshore wind and getting yourself back in.
Take the side-on angle from E to SSE when you get the choice: it gives the most room and the biggest margin from the bathing areas.
Send beginners to Quartu Poetto or Punta Trettu when Levante or Scirocco turns this beach into a wave spot.
Plan every session on self-rescue. Between October and April there are no lifeguards on this beach.
Build a summer trip around La Maddalena Spiaggia, about 15 minutes away, rather than around Poetto.
Ride the shorebreak days with an eye on your drift, because Scirocco sets a lateral current along the beach on top of it.
