On the clock

14:00 · 15:00 · 16:00 · 17:00 · 19:00

A set Maestrale runs day and night, but the usable window is the afternoon. Strength climbs from late morning, peaks between 14:00 and 17:00, and eases after 19:00. The winter afternoon peak is the sharpest: about one hour in four over 12 kt at 15:00-16:00, against one in ten overnight. Indicative, no local measurement.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Geremeas is a winter answer to a Cagliari problem: it is the only Mistral option a few kilometers from the city. The wind that works is pure Maestrale, or Maestrale with a west tendency; let it swing north and it turns very gusty, with holes in the first 100 meters off the beach.
The bay is small, the wind is often strong, and beginners have no business here. Summer is not open beach kiting near Cagliari: from 1 May to 30 September the only authorized kite area is La Maddalena Spiaggia, under the 2026 rules.
Nobody has published rescue cover, current data, a launch-corridor map or a kite-size range for Geremeas, so plan it as a self-sufficient session. Come on a clear winter Maestrale and ride somewhere else the rest of the year.

fills in: A set Maestrale runs day and night, but the usable window is the afternoon. Strength climbs from late morning, peaks between 14:00 and 17:00, and eases after 19:00. The winter afternoon peak is the sharpest: about one hour in four over 12 kt at 15:00-16:00, against one in ten overnight. Indicative, no local measurement.

Typical strength

12-20 kt when the Maestrale is working, into the high twenties on the hard days, with a modelled five-year peak above 30 kt. Roughly one hour in six clears 12 kt in January, March and April; June is the flattest month, at about one hour in forty. Indicative, no local measurement.

Pure Mistral works, and so does Mistral with a west tendency. A slight north tendency turns it very gusty and leaves holes in the first 100 meters.
January, March and April carry the most hours over 12 kt, with November, December and February close behind; May, June, September and October are thin. The October-to-April framing is set as much by the summer kite ban near Cagliari as by the wind, since July also carries a fair share of hours over 12 kt.
Kitesurfing near Cagliari is confined to the authorized kite area at La Maddalena Spiaggia from 1 May to 30 September. Wind figures are indicative, with no local measurement.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider: 12 m covers the 13-16 kt days, 9-10 m the 18-22 kt core of a Maestrale, 7-8 m when it is properly on. Size down rather than up, because the wind is gusty near the beach and a north lean punches holes in the first 100 m.Indicative, derived from the modelled wind distribution; no published local kite range.

Direction to shore

The beach runs NW-SE and faces about southwest. A clean WNW Maestrale lands cross-shore from the right with a slight onshore lean, and a west tendency swings it further onshore.Let it back to NNW or N and it is coming off the land behind the beach, which is where the gusts and the holes in the first 100 m come from.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

Nothing is published. No lifeguard or safety boat is listed, and no school works this beach; the Cagliari schools are the nearest people to call. 1530 is the coastguard emergency number. Plan the session as self-rescue, and keep in mind that a north-leaning Maestrale is blowing off the land here.

Rules & access
2026: from 1 May to 30 September, kitesurfing near Cagliari is allowed only in the authorized kite area at La Maddalena Spiaggia. Geremeas is a winter spot outside that window.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride it only on pure Maestrale, or Maestrale with a west tendency.
  • Walk away when the Maestrale shifts north: gusts and holes in the first 100 meters are what you get.
  • Do not learn here. La Maddalena Spiaggia, Is Solinas or Punta Trettu are the beaches for that.
  • Call a Cagliari school before you rig, above all inside the 1 May to 30 September bathing season.
  • Bring a full suit: the spot works in winter, when the water sits around 14.2 C.
  • The beach is Spiaggia Maròngiu. Some listings put Geremeas about a kilometre inland, so navigate to the beach and not to the village.
  • Afternoon is the window. The Maestrale reinforces from late morning and peaks between 14:00 and 17:00.
