When it fills in

A clear Mistral is already up when you arrive and holds through the day; there is no fill-in hour to wait for. From May to October the thermal builds on top of it as the land heats, so the afternoon is usually the strongest and steadiest part of a sunny day. Unconfirmed against any local hourly record.

Is Solinas is a broad sandy bay in the Gulf of Palmas near Masainas, and unlike most of the Sulcis it comes with services attached. The seabed is sand, shallow near the beach and deepening gradually, so the water stays flat to lightly choppy instead of turning into a wave setup.
That is why it fills with freeriders, people learning and foil and wing riders. The bay shape points the Mistral back at the shore, forgiving while you are learning and a grind when you are tired. Against the open-sea wave beaches of Sant'Antioco this is the soft option, and that is the point of it.
The wind pattern is NW/W/N, with thermal reinforcement on sunny days from May to October. During the bathing season kiting is confined to a designated area of the beach, so read the signs and ask the school before you rig. There is parking and food behind the beach; showers and a kite and wing school are on site.

Typical strength

No published spot average, and the live station on the beach is not archived anywhere public. Working days sit roughly in the 15-25 kt band, and on clear W or NW days the wind runs 5-10 kt above the forecast. Indicative, not measured.

Steady and safe enough in NW/W/N wind. Clear Mistral days are stronger and more constant.
Wind turns up year-round, with thermal strengthening from May to October. The South Sardinia flat-water spots are constant from March to November, and Is Solinas is the practical Sulcis alternative among them.

Thermal or synoptic

synoptic

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider, indicative: 12 m in 14-17 kt, 10 m at 18-22, 9 m at 23-26, 7 m in a hard Mistral. Rig for more than the forecast on a clear W or NW day, because it commonly overdelivers by 5-10 kt. No local size chart is published.

Direction to shore

NW Mistral comes into the enclosed bay head-on, onshore. W and SW arrive side-on to onshore, N side-shore. Onshore is why it is forgiving to learn on, and why a tired rider gets pushed back to the sand rather than out to sea.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Sand all the way out, shallow at the shore and deepening gradually, so there is a long wading zone before it goes over your head. The exact distance is unconfirmed, and with a Mediterranean tide it barely changes through the day.

Tides

No kite-specific tide dependency.

Temperature

25.6°C summer · 14.2°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer is usually boardshorts, rash vest or shorty depending on wind chill; winter and early spring need a full wetsuit, commonly around 4/3 mm.

15–26°C water
Broad sandy bay, generally flat water with light chop and an open-water texture. The seabed is sand, shallow near shore, deepening gradually enough to suit a foil farther out.

Your level

Sandy shallow water and onshore bay wind make this a beach you can learn on and keep coming back to. Freeride and progression both work, and it is a hydrofoil beach.

Hazards riders report 10

  • summer bathing-season restrictions outside the designated kite area
  • onshore wind can push riders back toward the beach
  • shared beach with swimmers and families in peak season
  • dunes and Mediterranean vegetation behind the beach should be protected
  • Summer bathing-season restrictions: kiting only inside the designated area
  • Onshore wind pushes a tired or underpowered rider back onto the beach
  • Shared beach with swimmers and families in peak season
  • Dunes and Mediterranean vegetation behind the beach are protected and off limits
  • Wind commonly 5-10 kt above forecast on clear W and NW days, so it is easy to arrive overpowered
  • No lifeguard outside the bathing season, and rescue cover only while the school is open
Rules & access
2026: the Sardinian regional beach ordinance (det. DG 2614/2026) sets the summer season from 1 April to 31 October and fixes the bathing season from the third week of May to the third week of September; marked launch and landing corridors stay in public use and must be used as the authorising act prescribes, with anchoring, mooring and swimming banned inside them, and the first 5 m from the water's edge kept clear for transit. During the bathing season kitesurf at Is Solinas is confined to a designated part of the beach; the boundary is posted on site and no public map was found. Maritime-authority and municipal ordinances sit on top of the regional text and are the ones that set the actual kite zone.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig inside the designated kite area during the bathing season, and read the signs at the Le Dune parking before you unroll lines.
  • Add to the forecast on sunny days: W and NW can blow 5-10 kt stronger than the numbers say.
  • Pick Is Solinas over Coequaddus or Spiaggia Grande when you are learning, progressing or on a foil.
  • Stay off the dunes behind the beach and keep clear of the swimmers in high summer.
  • Go to Porto Botte or Punta Trettu when you want flatter, lagoon-style water.
  • A 4/3 mm suit covers winter and early spring; in summer it is boardshorts with a rash vest when the wind bites.
  • Add to the forecast on sunny days: W and NW can blow 5-10 kt stronger than forecast, so bring the size below the one you would pick.
  • The on-site number for the school, rescue and the live wind reading is +39 324 584 2551; sea rescue nationally is 1530.
  • Summer parking at Le Dune is 3 EUR a day, 2 EUR from 13:00 (price seen in 2026).
