Santa Margherita di Pula, also listed as Cala Marina and usually described around Flamingo Beach, is a sandy open-sea spot in south Sardinia with no tide to read. The water runs the whole span, from shallow and flat to big waves, and every month of the year turns up as possible.
The tighter local read is 12-30 knots, chop with waves, minimum intermediate, no good for lessons. Grecale builds the rideable waves, Libeccio can push past 20 knots, and NW Mistral blows slightly offshore, which is the one to be careful with.
Summer is the real obstacle: from 1 May to 30 September kiting moves to the authorized kite area at La Maddalena Spiaggia near Cagliari, and the beach here fills with swimmers and umbrellas anyway. Access is the other problem, since much of the frontage is private or runs through resorts. In winter it is completely usable, which is when to come.

Character

Typical strength

12-30 kt

Depends entirely on the day: Grecale can build rideable waves, Libeccio can top 20 knots, and NW Mistral is slightly offshore and wants rescue on hand.
Treated locally as a winter spot, roughly 30 September to 30 April. From 1 May to 30 September the only authorized kite area in the province of Cagliari is La Maddalena Spiaggia, about 15 minutes toward Cagliari, so the calendar rather than the wind decides most of the year.
Libeccio doubles as a summer thermal here, which is of limited use while that restriction stands.

The quiver, in words

Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, derived from the 12-30 knot range rather than from local rider reports: 12 m at the light end, 9 m around 20 knots, 7 m when Libeccio pushes past 25. No measured local sizing is published.

Direction to shore

Grecale and Levante come in side-shore on port tack, and Levante above all is the one that builds waves worth surfing. Libeccio enters side to side-on-shore on starboard tack and arrives clean, both as a frontal wind and as a summer thermal. Scirocco is side-on but only really fills on a disturbance.NW Mistral is slightly offshore, which is the direction to have rescue lined up for.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

Have rescue lined up when NW Mistral blows, since it comes slightly offshore. No independent public rescue arrangement at Santa Margherita is published.

Launch

Big sandy beach reached around the Hotel Flamingo and Cala Marina. Getting onto it is the hard part, because much of the beach is private or runs through resorts, and summer kitesurfing moves to the authorized Maddalena Spiaggia kite area near Cagliari.

Rules & access
2026: from 1 May to 30 September kitesurfing is available only in the authorized kite area at La Maddalena Spiaggia near Cagliari, with Santa Margherita completely usable in winter. Sardinia's 2026 regional beach ordinance also regulates marked launch and landing corridors and beach use through the bathing season. No Santa Margherita-specific 2026 launch corridor is published.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Do not assume you can launch here in summer: check the current corridor or use the authorized Maddalena Spiaggia area.
  • Leave NW Mistral alone without confirmed rescue; it blows slightly offshore.
  • Ride Pula as a wave and freeride day, not as a base for learning.
  • For lessons or early progression, go to Maddalena Spiaggia, Poetto/Petrol Beach or Punta Trettu.
  • Levante is the direction that turns this into a wave day; Libeccio is the one that goes over 20 knots.
  • Treat 30 September to 30 April as the season and plan the trip around it.
