On the clock

20:00

Nothing thermal to wait for: the wind that works here arrives with a weather system, so a NW or NE can be in at dawn and still be there at midnight. There is a modest daily lift on top, indicative from 2016-2025 reanalysis, peaking around 15:00-16:00 in the cold half and later, 17:00 to 18:00, in summer. In summer that matters, because the wind is usually still near its daily peak at 20:00 when the daytime kite ban lifts.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Longchamp is a 600 m wave beach in Saint-Lunaire, between Dinard and Saint-Briac on the Cote d'Emeraude, and it is a surf beach first: when it works the water has surfers and windsurfers in it and the space for kites is tight. It only works in NW or NE.
Straight north is onshore, and with the waves that come with it getting back upwind is hard work, so a north forecast is not the day to drive over.
The tide is the big one here, Saint-Malo range: at low water a rock uncovers in the middle of the spot, and at high water the sea wall is the main danger and it disturbs the wind close in. Summer is mostly out.
Kiting is forbidden on all four Saint-Lunaire beaches every year from 15 June to 15 September between 10:00 and 20:00, so a summer session means early morning or evening.
Nobody has published wind numbers or a month-by-month season for the beach; the water is 18-19 C in summer and 8-10 C in winter, so it is a full suit even in summer and a thick one with hood, gloves, boots in winter. Intermediate-to-advanced wave riders only; it is not a place to learn.

In summer that matters, because the wind is usually still near its daily peak at 20:00 when the daytime kite ban lifts.

Typical strength

No anemometer average is published for the beach itself; the nearest live reading is the small wind station on the Pointe du Decolle. Indicative from 2016-2025 reanalysis: the mean sits near 10 kt from November to March and near 7-8 kt from June to August, with 15 kt or more in about one hour in seven in the winter half against roughly one hour in forty in midsummer. Since only NW and NE actually work here, the count of kiteable days is a fraction of that again.

Directional and technical. It works in NW or NE only, and at high tide the wind is disturbed near the sea wall.
No month-by-month wind season has been published. In practice this is a spring and autumn beach, plus summer mornings and evenings, because daytime kiting is banned in summer.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, no local size survey: the useful NW and NE days sit around 15-22 kt, which for 75-85 kg is a 9 m to 12 m on a twintip and a size down on a surfboard in the waves.A 7 m day here is a winter gale, and through most of the summer there is simply not enough wind in the sector that works.

Direction to shore

North is onshore. NW and NE are the sectors that work; whether they count as side-on or side-shore at the launch is unconfirmed.

Dominant direction

NW or NE only; in north wind the wind is onshore and waves limit upwind ability.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Not documented for kiting, and the tide decides it. On a big coefficient the low can be around 1.2 m against a following high above 12 m, so at low water there is shallow sand a long way out, with the mid-beach rock uncovered in it, and at high water the sand is squeezed against the sea wall with no shallow margin at all.

Tides

Saint-Malo range, and it runs the spot. On a big coefficient the low sits near 1.2 m and the following high goes above 12 m, so the beach empties and refills between sessions. At low tide a rock uncovers in the middle of the spot; at high tide the sea wall is the main danger and it disturbs the wind close in.

Temperature

18-19°C summer · 8-10°C winter

Wetsuit

Cold-water Channel setup: summer generally still requires a full suit for long kite sessions; winter requires a thick suit with hood/gloves/boots. Exact local kite-school wetsuit guidance was not found.

Rescue

Town-employed, SNSM-trained lifeguards watch the marked bathing zone on all four Saint-Lunaire beaches daily in July and August, 11:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 19:00 (2026), with a flag mast on each beach and a beach wheelchair at the post.
That is bathing supervision inside the zone, not kite rescue, and it covers exactly the weeks when kiting is banned from 10:00 to 20:00. Outside July and August nobody is watching.

Launch

Rig on the sand only when the tide has left enough of it, and keep clear of the surfers and windsurfers, the central rock and the sea wall. It is a 600 m board-sports beach; there is a local surf report and an anemometer for it.

Space

Restricted; the practice area is small.

Rules & access
  • 2026: kitesurfing is prohibited on all four Saint-Lunaire beaches, Longchamp included, from 15 June to 15 September every year, between 10:00 and 20:00; the town's order regulating beach policing and safety was reissued in 2025. 2026: unregistered craft, including windsurf boards, boards, kayaks and sea canoes, may not be used inside the supervised bathing zone.
  • 2026: dogs and other animals are banned from the beaches from 15 June to 15 September, guide dogs excepted.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Skip high tide when the beach is squeezed against the sea wall: the wall is the main danger and the wind near it is disturbed.
  • Note where the central rock uncovers at low tide before you ride; it sits in the middle of the spot.
  • North wind is onshore here and the waves make upwind a grind; only NW or NE work, so do not go on a straight-north forecast.
  • From 15 June to 15 September kiting is banned between 10:00 and 20:00 on every Saint-Lunaire beach, every year; in summer plan for before 10:00 or after 20:00.
  • Give the surfers and windsurfers their water; the practice area is small and it is a surf beach.
  • Full suit even in summer (18-19 C water); a thick suit with hood, gloves, boots in winter at 8-10 C.
  • The evening slot after 20:00 in summer is not a consolation prize: this coast is usually still near its daily wind peak at that hour.
  • Check the tide coefficient with the forecast. A 1 m low and a 12 m high on the same day are two different beaches.
  • There is a live wind station on the Pointe du Decolle; it is the closest reading to the beach.

FAQ

Is Plage de Longchamp suitable for beginners?

No; it is a wave spot with restricted launch space, surfers, a low-tide rock and a high-tide sea wall, and is not supported as a beginner teaching spot.

What is the wind like?

The local association says it works only in NW or NE wind; in north wind the flow is onshore and waves can limit upwind progress.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

Kitesurfing is forbidden on all four Saint-Lunaire beaches, including Longchamp, every year from 15 June to 15 September between 10:00 and 20:00.

What are the main hazards?

A rock in the middle of the spot that uncovers at low tide, the sea wall as the main danger at high tide, and cohabitation with surfers and windsurfers.
