When it fills in

Front-driven, so it can be up at any hour and the best days often start before breakfast. On top of that there is a daily build: lightest around sunrise, picking up from mid-morning, best from about midday to 5pm, easing after 6pm. In spring the share of hours over 12 knots roughly triples between dawn and mid-afternoon. Indicative, from modelled hourly data rather than a beach station.

Nord-Nord Strand is the kite beach at Podersdorf am See on Lake Neusiedl, the flagship Austrian lake spot, and the wind comes with the weather, not with the afternoon.
NW is the direction you want, onshore to side-on and the most frequent; SE-SW shows up in summer and SE more in autumn and winter, and the S/SE and easterly days are gustier and side-off.
Spring and autumn are the seasons, March to May and September to October, when west-weather fronts bring 6-25 knots and a 7-15 m quiver covers it.
The lake is 1.5-1.6 m deep on average and you can stand almost everywhere, which is why the schools sit on this beach and why it is one of the easiest places in Austria to learn. It is also why it is crowded: windy weekends and holidays fill the setup area early.
From 10 May to 20 September the Burgenland rule keeps kites 200 m off the shore; at Podersdorf that is the yellow-buoy line, and you walk or body-drag out through the marked corridors, no jumping in them.
Riding here needs the official kite trikot, 15 EUR (2026), on top of PODOBEACH day admission of 10.50 EUR (2026) in high season or 7.90 EUR (2026) in low season. Summer thunderstorms can take the wind from nothing to 6-10 Beaufort fast, and low-water spells make the near-shore very shallow and foiling a poor idea.

Typical strength

6-25

Front-driven inland-lake wind: it blows often, but it shifts and gusts; the easterly and southerly days are the least reliable and the gustiest.
Spring and autumn are the main seasons. Summer brings SE-SW wind but also light spells and sudden thunderstorms; autumn and winter turn more SE, and from March and April the west-weather fronts bring the stronger days. No published long-term station average exists for the beach.
Modelled long-run values over the lake put the all-hours mean near 7 knots and the average daily peak at 11-13 knots, with a daily maximum over 12 knots on about half the days from January to May and under a third in August. The wind is frontal first and thermal second.

The quiver, in words

7-15 m covers the year. For a 75-85 kg rider that means a 12 m on the common 12-15 knot days, 9-10 m when a front pushes 18-22, and a 7 m on the strong NW days, with the 15 m kept for the marginal end. The weight-anchored sizes are indicative, read off the wind range.

Direction to shore

NW is onshore to side-onshore at Podersdorf; W/SW are described as onshore or side-shore, while S/SE can be side-offshore and gusty.

Dominant direction

NW most frequent; N/NW and SE/SW are main directions, with SE to SW more common in summer and SE more common in autumn/winter.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

flat

Standing depth

Shallow freshwater steppe lake; about 1.5-1.6 m average depth, with standing-depth water across most or almost all of the lake.

Tides

None; it is a lake.

Temperature

25°C summer

Currents

No tidal current; strong wind can move water around the lake and cause local low-water/rescue limitations.

Freshwater, shallow, mostly flat lake water. Low water levels can be helpful for learning but require care near shore and make foiling less suitable.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Standing depth and a row of schools make it a beginner lake; advanced riders and pros ride here too, mostly on the frontal days. On those days the gusts and the crowd are the judgement call.

The scene

What riders come here for

beginnerslearningfreestylefreerideflatwater
The flagship Austrian lake scene, with a row of schools, a couple of shops, gear storage and a proper beach setup; social and convenient. Windy weekends, public holidays and bathing-season days are crowded.

Rescue

The kite schools run a boat pickup. In strong wind the water gets pushed across the lake and can go too shallow for a boat to reach some places. The lifeguards, showers and toilets belong to the PODOBEACH bathing area rather than to the kite water.

Launch

Nord-Nord Strand is the named kite area at Podersdorf, in front of the cluster of schools. The beach is laid out in lanes: an entrance, three setup zones behind the yellow line, one start and landing zone, three buoyed corridors out through the shallows, and a separate windsurf area to one side.Launching and landing are only allowed in the marked start and landing zone; the corridors are for entry and exit and must be kept clear.

Hazards riders report 10

  • wind can be unpredictable/gusty (especially from the east)
  • shallow water close to shore
  • crowded on windy weekends
  • Gusty and rapidly changing frontal wind
  • Sudden thunderstorms and storms can increase wind quickly to 6-10 Beaufort
  • S/SE and easterly winds can be side-offshore and/or gusty
  • Very shallow water and low-water periods near shore
  • Crowding on windy weekends and holidays
  • Nature reserve on the left side of the shore after about 500 m; landing there is prohibited
  • Marked entry/exit corridors must be kept clear; no jumping in corridors
Rules & access
2026: you need the official kite trikot, 15,00 EUR (2026), worn where it can be seen at all times and sold at the cash desk, plus PODOBEACH day admission, 10,50 EUR (2026) in high season or 7,90 EUR (2026) in low season. Launch and land only in the marked start and landing zone, without exception. Do not park kites, boards or foils in that zone, and secure kites properly on land; rig and park in the setup zones in front of the yellow line. The yellow-buoy corridors are for going out and coming in only and jumping in them is forbidden. Swimming is banned across the whole watersports area. Landing in the nature reserve along the shore is prohibited. Do what the beach staff tell you. The Burgenland state rule (Landesverordnung paragraph 16) runs every year from 10 May to 20 September: no kitesurfing on Lake Neusiedl within 200 m of shore except designated exceptions, which at Podersdorf means the yellow-buoy zone.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the local station's live reading before rigging; on a frontal day the forecast and the lake disagree.
  • Bring the small kite on a NW front: the gusts build fast, and the range is 7-15 m for a reason.
  • 10 May to 20 September: walk or body-drag out past the yellow 200 m buoy line before you put the board on, using the marked corridors.
  • No jumping in the corridors, no parked kites in the start/landing zone, and launch only there; beach staff will send you back.
  • Windy weekend: arrive early, the Nord-Nord Strand parking and setup area fill fast.
  • In a low-water spell stay off the foil and watch the depth near shore; the left-hand shore past about 500 m is nature reserve and landing there is prohibited.
  • Buy the kite trikot, 15 EUR (2026), and pay PODOBEACH admission, 10.50 EUR (2026) high season or 7.90 EUR (2026) low season, before walking onto the beach.
  • On a marginal day, wait it out: the lake adds a few knots through the middle of the day and gives back what it gave after about 6pm.
