Policoro Lido has no other spot on this map within 40 km of it. straight-line distance

Policoro Lido is a sandy strip on the Basilicata stretch of the Ionian coast, in the Metapontino south of Matera, and it is the only clear kite entry anyone has documented on that shore. The wind is the problem.
The sourced range is 1-10 knots, NE or SW, across March to October, which makes this a lesson beach and a light-wind freeride beach, nothing more. A local sailing club runs kitesurf courses in Policoro, so there is someone to learn from, but nobody has published a reliable monthly wind figure for the spot.
In summer the sand fills with bathers. Basilicata requires kite departure and landing through designated corridors, and no Policoro corridor map is published for 2026, so ask before you rig.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rules & access
2025: in Regione Basilicata, kitesurf departure and landing must use designated corridors. No Policoro-specific corridor map is published for 2026.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Bring the biggest kite you own: the sourced range here is 1-10 knots.
  • Ask the sailing club where the corridor runs before you launch; Basilicata requires marked departure and landing lanes (2025).
  • Come in the shoulder months, March to May or September to October, when the beach is empty.
  • Treat July and August as bathers first, kiters second, and set up well away from the umbrellas.
