Praia Formosa is Madeira's largest public beach, roughly 2 km of rolled pebble and black sand west of central Funchal in Sao Martinho, and it is the island's west-wind kite option.
That is the whole story and the whole problem. The usable west wind, running parallel to the coast, is reportedly rare, and when it does arrive the mountains behind Funchal can turn a 5 kt forecast into 15-20 kt at the right corner, which is not a forecast anyone can plan a trip around.

Water and launch

The water is flat to choppy over an exposed point that throws lefts and rights on SW groundswell, and the launch is a small rocky patch rather than open sand.

Not for learners

Skip it if you are learning: rocks, a tight launch, swimmers on the same water, no kite rescue published. That is a poor combination for a first year.

Lifeguard coverage

During the 2026 bathing season, 1 June to 15 September, lifeguards work the marked guarded area. Outside it a January 2026 edict keeps the promenade covered by the beach concessionaire: three equipped first-aid posts, seven lookout posts with rescue gear, and two lifeguards patrolling by bicycle between 09:30 and 17:30, with the lifeguard's contact number on signage at each post.

Beach safety and rules

2026: the bathing season at Praia Formosa runs 1 June to 15 September and the beach is lifeguarded; outside that period a separate 28 January 2026 edict keeps a vigilance regime on the promenade. No kite-specific permit, zone or seasonal restriction was found for this beach.

Harbour rules

The harbour master's 2024 rule for surfing modalities - surf, bodyboard, bodysurf, longboard and SUP - does not cover kitesurf, and its licensed teaching corridors are at Alagoa, Maiata, Sao Roque, Seixal and Baia dos Juncos, not here; it does set the local benchmark that board sports run only between sunrise and half an hour before sunset and are banned outright under an IPMA orange sea-state warning.
The general rule stands: no board sport inside an area reserved for bathers.

  • Only rig when the wind is actually west and parallel to the coast; offshore or straight onshore against the mountain does not work here.
  • Look at the beach in person before you commit. The usable sand and pebble is small and rocky, the four sections are Praia Nova, Formosa, dos Namorados and do Areeiro, and the 150-space car park fills early in summer.
  • Do not treat a low model wind as definitive: mountain acceleration turns a 5 kt forecast into 15-20 kt at the right corner of the island.
  • During 1 June-15 September 2026 stay clear of the guarded swimming area and speak to the lifeguards first. Out of season the promenade still has three first-aid posts, seven lookout posts and two lifeguards patrolling by bicycle between 09:30 and 17:30, with a phone number posted at each one.
