Qurum Beach is Muscat's city beach, a long strip of sand at Shatti Al-Qurum facing the Gulf of Oman, and kiting here is a local habit rather than a trip.

The wind is NE, cross-onshore, and the season is the cold half of the year, November-April, with the afternoon usually the best of it; plenty of people ride in the evening because of the heat. How much wind you get depends on which figure you trust: one range puts it at 5-15 kt, another at 15-22 kt, so read the forecast the night before and pack the big kite.

Water and beach

The water is chop with good clarity, it deepens slowly, and the current runs hard when the tide turns. The beach signs point it out. Walk the sand before you pump, because stones and debris will chew a kite that gets dragged.

When to visit

This is a public beach with walkers, joggers and families on it, not a kite scene, so nobody is going to land your kite for you. Come if you live in Muscat or you are already in the capital, 20-30 minutes from Muscat International Airport; it is not worth a flight on its own.

No kite rescue, no kite school based on the beach and no documented lifeguard cover at Shatti Al-Qurum, so a self-rescue and a body-drag back to the sand are the plan.

Emergency calls in Oman go to 9999, the Royal Oman Police number (2026). The practical cover is riding with someone who knows how the current runs at the tide change.

Launch

Large sandy public city beach at Shatti Al-Qurum. Low tide makes the beach wider, and high tide still leaves plenty of space for launching and landing, but stones and debris on the sand can damage a kite if dragged.

2025: a security permit exists for organized sporting activities and events at beaches and clubs, covering diving, tour-boat operation, jet skiing and cruises, with designated-site, weather-check and daylight-hour conditions; kitesurfing is not on the list, and the permit targets organizers and operators rather than individual riders.

2026: Muscat Municipality's Local Order No. 23/92 and No. 32/97 prohibit driving cars or riding motorbikes on any public beach in Muscat, Shatti Al-Qurum included, with fines up to 100 OMR or up to two months imprisonment. No Qurum-specific kitesurf zoning, permit rule or rescue requirement for individual riders was found.
