When it fills in

Afternoon. The Muscat coast runs a thermal on- to side-shore breeze that builds as the land heats and fades in the evening, which is why mornings are usually a write-off here. No Azaiba-specific start or finish hour is published.

Athaiba is the old kite-spot spelling for the Muscat launch everyone now calls Azaiba, listed as Alzaiba/Athaiba Beach at 23.605, 58.3767 on the Gulf of Oman. It is a real launch rather than a padded directory entry: Azaiba is one of the main Muscat kite beaches and the schools teach here through the October-April winter.
The water is warm, shallow a long way out, and mixed between flat, chop and small waves, so you get ramps but no real swell.
Take it as a convenient city session or a lesson venue a 10-20 minute drive from Muscat International Airport, not as the reason you fly to Oman; Masirah and Bar Al Hikman are the reliable ones. The beach narrows at high water, the sand is full of shells, and rocks show at the lowest tide.
Season information contradicts itself across every account, so ride on the day's forecast and on what the local school tells you.

Typical strength

10-20 knots reported at Muscat/Azaiba; 12-15 knots average is also reported at Athaiba.

The 12-15 knot average is a steady one, with NE the best direction and NW noticeably less powerful. For the October-April season the figure given elsewhere is 10-20 knots.
Usable in several seasons, and the accounts do not agree: spring, summer and fall good with winter unpredictable in one, October-April in another, May-September in a third. Treat Azaiba as a light-wind city beach whose good days depend on the forecast rather than the calendar.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

mixed

Standing depth

The water is shallow for about 500 m from shore before getting deeper.

Tides

Big tide range, and the beach width goes with it: at high tide it narrows to about 30 m. Tide-aware forecasts are published for Alzaiba Beach.

Temperature

30-31°C summer · 23-25°C winter

Wetsuit

Usually no wetsuit; rash guard/shorts common, optional lightweight shorty in winter.

Currents

Nothing charted at the launch. When it blows, the chop comes with a set moving along the beach, enough to matter if you are swimming after a board. No rip channel or measured flow is documented, so read the water before you commit downwind.

24–33°C water
Shallow and clear, and mixed in state: flat patches, chop and small waves, with the ramps forming because the shallow shelf runs so far offshore. The sea is warm all year, averaging around 30.9 C in summer and around 24.4 C in winter.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Graded beginner, intermediate and expert, and the local school runs its winter teaching here. Beginner suitability still turns on the beach crowd, the cars and motorbikes, the tide-shrunk launch width, and having supervision in onshore or cross-onshore wind.

Rescue

No lifeguard cover to count on: this is an open city beach with no posted service. In practice the cover is the local school and whoever else is on the sand, so stay inside a self-rescue of the beach and tell someone your plan.
Oman's emergency number is 9999; maritime incidents, drownings included, go to the Coast Guard on 24714888 (2026).

Launch

Soft sandy public beach in Muscat/Azaiba, with shells, about 2 km of available beach, parking, and easy beach access; the launch/landing area can shrink at high tide, and bystanders/cars are reported hazards.

Hazards riders report 10

  • rocks exposed at lowest tide or rough-season conditions
  • shells on beach
  • bystanders on an urban public beach
  • cars/motorbikes historically entering beach areas
  • animals reported at the beach
  • reefs reported at the beach, though the same description also denies any reef there
  • very strong sun and heat
  • forecast-dependent light wind
  • vehicle access to the beach is prohibited under Muscat Municipality's beach-driving ban, though older listings still describe driving up to the water
  • no reef at the beach entry itself, despite the generic reef hazard tag carried elsewhere
Rules & access
  • 2026: Muscat Municipality prohibits driving cars and riding motorbikes on public beaches under Local Order No. 23/92 and No. 32/97, with fines up to 100 OMR or imprisonment up to two months; this covers every Muscat public beach, Athaiba/Azaiba included.
  • 2022: camping was prohibited on Al-Azaiba Beach and Al-Ghubra Beach because those sites fall outside the camping-permit areas.
  • 2025: the separate Royal Oman Police beach-activity permit covers organized sporting activities and events (diving, tour-boat operation, jet skiing, cruises) rather than individual casual riders, and kitesurfing is not among the listed activities. No 2026 source confirms a kiteboarding-specific permit, zoning map, rescue requirement or seasonal kite restriction at Athaiba/Azaiba.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the Alzaiba/Athaiba forecast the same morning; this is a local wind and the days are hit or miss.
  • Take your first sessions with a school or a local: the beach is public, tide-affected and full of bystanders.
  • Do not drive onto the sand. Muscat Municipality bans vehicles on public beaches, so park legally and walk in.
  • Carry sun protection and more water than you plan to drink; you will not need a wetsuit.
  • Rig away from the hotel and public-use sections once the after-work crowd arrives.

Azaiba is inside Muscat. Drive toward Ghoubrah, carry on to the beach and follow it until you can see kites. Muscat airport is about 10 km from the spot. Public beaches are closed to vehicles, so find a legal parking and access point instead of driving onto the sand.
