Les Rochelets is the beach Saint-Brevin gives to kites in summer: from 15 May to 15 September it is the town's dedicated kitesurf beach, with the schools running access for free riders, while the other Saint-Brevin beaches only open to kites from 16 September to 14 May.
So it is one of the few places on this coast where you can ride in July. Wind works from SSE to NW with W the best of it, and a thermal breeze reportedly fills in along Saint-Brevin on warm days.
All tides work, but high tide is the one to plan for, when the basin behind the Boivre sill fills and the water goes flat; otherwise expect small waves around 1 m.
The hazards are people and paperwork rather than terrain: bathers, surfers on lines you will not see, buffer zones, nesting areas, fragile dunes you must not rig on, and a crowd whenever the temperature climbs. Small rock slabs show at low tide on big coefficients.
There is a lifeguard post with parking, shower and WC in season, but no kite rescue on record, and the water is 19.1 C in August and 8.7 C in February.

Typical strength

About 15 knots of steady breeze is the working average for the Saint-Brevin beaches as a group; indicative, with no measurement at this beach. The usable band runs SSE to NW with W the best of it.

A regular thermal breeze reportedly builds along Saint-Brevin, and Rochelets works in Atlantic synoptic wind too. No monthly reliability figures.
In low season - 16 September to 14 June, minus every weekend and public holiday between 1 May and 30 September - kites are allowed along the whole Saint-Brevin shore.
In high season the free-rider kite zone is the stretch between allee des Bouillons and allee des Paquerettes, at the south end of Rochelets running into l'Ermitage, well clear of the supervised bathing strip that begins at avenue Alexandre Bernard.
The 2024 municipal order starts high season on 15 June; 15 May is the date in wide circulation locally, so treat mid-May as the moment the zoning bites.

Conflicting: about 15 kt average breeze by one count, 3 kt annual average from station observations between 2012-04-01 and 2024-08-31 by another; neither is spot-specific.

The quiver, in words

No local size chart exists. Worked back from the roughly 15-knot area average, a 75-85 kg rider on a twintip is on a 12 m for an ordinary day, a 9 m when it blows into the low twenties, and a 14 m or a foil under 12 knots. Indicative, derived from the wind figure rather than measured here.

Direction to shore

side-onshore to side-shore for W/SW/NW on the west-facing beach; exact angle by direction unconfirmed.

Dominant direction

SSE to NW; best W. Also reported as S to NW.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

ocean beach

Standing depth

Shallow patches around the Boivre sill at high tide, reportedly; no measured range.

Tides

Works at all tides. At high water the cuvette behind the Boivre sill fills; it is described both as the flattest water on the beach and as the part that throws up waves of about a metre, so look at it from the sand before you commit to a board. Small rock slabs show through at low water on big coefficients.

Temperature

19°C summer · 9°C winter

Wetsuit

Cold Atlantic water year-round: 19.1 C in August and 8.7 C in February. Mid-August wants a 3/2 mm sealed wetsuit; late winter a 5/4 to 6/5/4 with hood, boots and gloves.

10–21°C water
Long sandy beach with a marked seasonal nautical-sports area. At high tide a flatter basin (the cuvette) fills; small waves, around 1 m, are typical. Bathing is supervised in July and August.

Your level

Rescue

The Rochelets lifeguard post is one of the town's four. In 2025 all four were staffed from 2 July to 31 August, every day, 13:00 to 18:45; outside those hours swimming and everything else is at your own risk. A tiralo beach wheelchair is kept at the post.
Cover is for bathers - there is no kite-specific rescue - and in high season a beach marshal reportedly patrols the kite zone to keep the zoning honest.

Launch

Launch from the Rochelets lifeguard-station/parking sector and stay inside the posted kite navigation zone when seasonal zoning is active.

Hazards riders report 13

  • seasonal bathing and watersports zoning
  • Boivre creek and tide-dependent water state
  • shared-use beach
  • Very frequented when temperatures rise
  • Nearby bathers and summer buffer zones
  • Surfers sharing the same area and following different lines
  • Small rock slabs visible at low tide on large tidal coefficients
  • Seasonal bird nesting zones
  • Fragile dunes; do not walk or rig there
  • Shared-use beach where other beach users have priority
  • Supervised bathing strip immediately north of the avenue Alexandre Bernard alignment, 200 m wide
  • Riding inside the first 50 m from the water's edge is against the municipal order
  • Lifeguard cover is short: 2 July to 31 August in 2025, and only 13:00 to 18:45
Rules & access
2024 municipal order ST 2024-0177 of 21 May 2024. Low season is 16 September to 14 June excluding weekends and public holidays between 1 May and 30 September, and kitesurfing is allowed along the whole beach.
High season is 15 June to 15 September plus those weekends and holidays; the kite zone for free riders is then the stretch between allee des Bouillons and allee des Paquerettes, and the order states that zone is for free riders only, with authorised clubs and schools placed on the separate northern stretch between avenue Roger and chemin de la Marine where no more than 24 kites may be in the air at once out to the 300 m band and trainees must wear a coloured bib.
The supervised bathing zone at Rochelets is the 200 m north of the avenue Alexandre Bernard alignment. Year-round: ride beyond the first 50 m from the water's edge, marked by buoys 25 m apart; rig and derig only inside the marked zones; pedestrians and bathers have priority; obey the municipal police and beach mediators.
Clubs and schools must apply for access before 15 February each year. Marked bird-nesting areas and the dunes are off limits.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Read the posted zoning at the lifeguard station before you rig in summer; bathing, surf, buffer and kite areas move, and the kite zone is the only place you are allowed.
  • Between 15 May and 15 September the schools manage free-rider access, so ask them first rather than launching and finding out.
  • Come up on the high tide for the flat water in the Boivre basin, but only if the posted kite area includes it.
  • Surfers ride different lines and are hard to spot in the water; give them and the bathers more room than you think you need.
  • On big coefficients at low tide small rock slabs show through; do not assume it is all sand.
  • Rig on the beach, not in the dunes; they are fragile, and bird nesting zones close parts of the beach in season.
  • The high-season kite zone sits between allee des Bouillons and allee des Paquerettes, south of the bathing strip that starts at avenue Alexandre Bernard.
  • Lifeguard hours in 2025 were 13:00 to 18:45 from 2 July to 31 August; a morning session in July has nobody watching.
  • Stay beyond the buoy line 50 m off the water's edge; the buoys sit 25 m apart.
  • The cuvette at high water is called both the flat spot and a metre of wave; look at it before you pick a board.
  • Mark your board and kite with your name and phone number, reportedly obligatory on these beaches.

Beginners are listed among typical riders on this wide sandy beach, but summer crowding, zoning and nearby bathers mean independent beginners should ride under school or local supervision.

What hazards should I know about?

Hazards include seasonal bathing and watersports zoning, tide-dependent water near the Boivre creek, small rock slabs visible at low tide on big coefficients, fragile dunes and bird nesting zones to avoid.

Are there kite schools or rental?

Several kite schools operate nearby, including LINE UP Kiteschool, H2air Kiteschool, Glisse Academy and Association NewKite.
