Grande Plage is the long west-facing town beach of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, running south from the port and jetty toward Bretignolles-sur-Mer, with the Vie river mouth at its north end.
That river mouth is the thing to respect: it pulls a tidal current, and the beach itself is posted for dangerous currents, so check the tide before you launch anywhere near the entrance.
Wind is west-sector, southwest to northwest, with northwest side-on and southwest more onshore; NE and E are offshore and ESE side-off, and nobody has published reliable wind averages for this exact beach.
In season kites are allowed only in a limited zone at La Passerelle, the 2026 beach-safety order applies, and lifeguard posts run from late June to late August, with a resort crowd to walk through in July and August.
Kitesurf Saint Gilles, the local club, is based here and the school takes beginners, but on your own this is an intermediate spot: swell, shorebreak, current and port zones. Outside peak summer it is a local Atlantic session spot with far fewer people. Water is about 19.4 C in August and about 10.2 C in winter.

Character

Typical strength

No station sits on this beach. Town-level monthly means run from about 16 km/h in August to about 23 km/h in December, roughly 9 to 12 knots as an all-hours average, so the kiteable days are the ones well above that line. Indicative, no local measurement.

Open Atlantic exposure; west-sector winds are the usable ones. No live wind station on the beach itself.
Open all year; surveillance and zoning change for the 2026 summer period. No best-month list on record.

Direction to shore

NW is side-on; SW is onshore; NE/E are offshore; ESE is side-off.

Dominant direction

SW to NW; SE is side-off and not a direction people choose.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Tide-affected Atlantic beach at the mouth of the Vie. The river mouth runs a tidal current; check it before launching.

Temperature

19.4°C summer · 10.2°C winter

Wetsuit

Cool Atlantic water: about 19.4 C average in August and about 10.2 C in winter. Full suit most of the year, thicker neoprene in the cold months.

Currents

Tidal current at the Vie river mouth, and Grande Plage itself is posted for dangerous currents. Swimming is banned all year in the Vie, in the Jaunay, in the port channel and in the buoyed nautical channels, which tells you plainly enough what the water does there.

Rescue

Lifeguards on the bathing sectors, nothing for kiters. Grande Plage is watched from 27 June to 30 August 2026, 11:00-12:30 and 14:00-19:00, from the Garenne, Rochebonne and la Paterne posts, with lookouts at Notre Dame and Océanides.
The Rochebonne post takes calls on 06 72 97 47 19 during the surveillance period; otherwise 112. The kite channel sits in the third sector, which is not watched at all. The local school sells supervised riding and coaching sessions, with a boat option at extra cost.

Launch

Access is from the front-de-mer: about 15 minutes' walk through Grande Plage, or about 10 minutes through the Passerelle / Paterne access. The kite water is the buoyed channel at the south end of the beach, past accès 29 and beyond the 50 m Paterne buffer zone, rather than the middle of the beach where the bathing sector runs.

Rules & access
2026: municipal beach order 2026-0922-PLA sets bathing and nautical rules inside the 300 m band. Grande Plage is split into three sectors. A 50 m buffer at the Garenne jetty is closed to everything. From accès 11 to 175 m past accès 29 runs the 2,480 m bathing and nautical sector, ending in a 50 m Paterne buffer that separates bathers from the kite channel. Kitesurf, wingfoil, windsurf, rowing, canoe, sea kayak and SUP over 3.5 m have their own 300 m-wide buoyed channel, sector 4, starting 350 m past accès 29 and marked by cylindrical buoys to the north and biconical buoys to the south; it is a corridor between the shore and open water and speed inside it is capped at 5 knots. Past it, about 340 m of unwatched, unregulated water runs to the commune boundary. Foil craft are allowed only before 10:00 and after 20:00 and only inside surf zone 2b. Swimming is banned year-round in the Vie, the Jaunay, the port channel and the nautical channels. When the buoys are not in place, surf, kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf are allowed at the rider's own risk, still under the 5-knot limit in the 300 m band. Smoking has been banned on the beach since 27 June 2025.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Find the current La Passerelle/Paterne kite zone on the beach map or the signage before you rig; in season it is the only stretch of Grande Plage where kites are allowed.
  • Check the tide before launching anywhere near the Vie entrance; the river mouth pulls a tidal current and Grande Plage itself is posted for dangerous currents.
  • Stay well off the port, the jetty and the bathing zones, and pick the west-sector days: NW is side-on, SW onshore, NE/E offshore and ESE side-off.
  • In July and August park on the front-de-mer and budget extra walking time through the crowd to the Passerelle access.
  • Full wetsuit most of the year: about 19.4 C in August and about 10.2 C in winter.
  • The kite channel starts 350 m past accès 29 and runs 300 m wide between the buoys; it is a corridor to open water at 5 knots, not a playground.
  • Nobody watches the sector the kite channel sits in; the lifeguard posts cover the bathing sectors, 27 June to 30 August 2026, 11:00-12:30 and 14:00-19:00.
  • If you foil, the window is before 10:00 and after 20:00, and only in the surf zone.

FAQ

Is it suitable for beginners?

The spot is rated for intermediate riders rather than beginners, because of Atlantic swell, tidal current at the Vie river mouth and nearby port zones.

Are there rules, permits or restricted zones?

In season, surf, longboard and kitesurfing at Grande Plage are authorised only in a limited zone at La Passerelle, and a 2026 municipal order governs beach safety and nautical activities.

What hazards should I know about?

Hazards include tidal current at the Vie river mouth, Atlantic swell and shorebreak, port and jetty zones, and a shared beach with surfers, bathers and resort users.

What is the wind like?

The best wind sector runs southwest to northwest, with northwest side-on and southwest more onshore; northeast and east winds are offshore.
