The spots
Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie - Grande Plage
Grande Plage is the long west-facing town beach of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, running south from the port and jetty toward Bretignolles-sur-Mer, with the Vie river mouth at its north end.
intermediateIn seasonno month named for this spot
The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 15.2 kt in November, the strongest month it models for this spot.

More on Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie - Grande Plage
That river mouth is the thing to respect: it pulls a tidal current, and the beach itself is posted for dangerous currents, so check the tide before you launch anywhere near the entrance. Wind is west-sector, southwest to northwest, with northwest side-on and southwest more onshore; NE and E are offshore and ESE side-off, and nobody has published reliable wind averages for this exact beach. In season kites are allowed only in a limited zone at La Passerelle, the 2026 beach-safety order applies, and lifeguard posts run from late June to late August, with a resort crowd to walk through in July and August. Kitesurf Saint Gilles, the local club, is based here and the school takes beginners, but on your own this is an intermediate spot: swell, shorebreak, current and port zones. Outside peak summer it is a local Atlantic session spot with far fewer people. Water is about 19.4 C in August and about 10.2 C in winter.
Getting on the water
Access is from the front-de-mer: about 15 minutes' walk through Grande Plage, or about 10 minutes through the Passerelle / Paterne access. The kite water is the buoyed channel at the south end of the beach, past accès 29 and beyond the 50 m Paterne buffer zone, rather than the middle of the beach where the bathing sector runs.
If it goes wrong
Lifeguards on the bathing sectors, nothing for kiters. Grande Plage is watched from 27 June to 30 August 2026, 11:00-12:30 and 14:00-19:00, from the Garenne, Rochebonne and la Paterne posts, with lookouts at Notre Dame and Océanides. The Rochebonne post takes calls on 06 72 97 47 19 during the surveillance period; otherwise 112. The kite channel sits in the third sector, which is not watched at all. The local school sells supervised riding and coaching sessions, with a boat option at extra cost.
Room to rig
large sandy beach, seasonally constrained by bathing and activity zones
Rules and access
2026: municipal beach order 2026-0922-PLA sets bathing and nautical rules inside the 300 m band. Grande Plage is split into three sectors. A 50 m buffer at the Garenne jetty is closed to everything. From accès 11 to 175 m past accès 29 runs the 2,480 m bathing and nautical sector, ending in a 50 m Paterne buffer that separates bathers from the kite channel. Kitesurf, wingfoil, windsurf, rowing, canoe, sea kayak and SUP over 3.5 m have their own 300 m-wide buoyed channel, sector 4, starting 350 m past accès 29 and marked by cylindrical buoys to the north and biconical buoys to the south; it is a corridor between the shore and open water and speed inside it is capped at 5 knots. Past it, about 340 m of unwatched, unregulated water runs to the commune boundary. Foil craft are allowed only before 10:00 and after 20:00 and only inside surf zone 2b. Swimming is banned year-round in the Vie, the Jaunay, the port channel and the nautical channels. When the buoys are not in place, surf, kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf are allowed at the rider's own risk, still under the 5-knot limit in the 300 m band. Smoking has been banned on the beach since 27 June 2025.
Saint-Jean-de-Monts - Plage de la Daviere
La Daviere is the long west-facing beach north of the Saint-Jean-de-Monts resort, backed by forest and dunes, and it is the spot people fall back on in summer when the central beach is closed to kites by municipal order.

Kiting is authorised all year, and the 2026 order gives kites a buoyed zone 500 m long starting 100 m east of the Chemin de la Daviere access, open from sunrise to 19:00 daily until the last Saturday of August; facing the sea, it is on your left. Sandy bottom, no rocks, chop and waves over the sandbanks. The tide is the catch: on large coefficients there is no beach at all at high water, so nowhere to launch or land, and waves build on the flood and fade on the ebb. West to northwest is the cleanest wind and the most frequent; south to southeast comes through irregular off the forest and relief. A 22 kt figure gets quoted for the spot but nobody has a primary wind table, and the best months are November to March, when the water is around 10.1 C. Summer averages about 15 riders on the beach and 19.3 C in the water, with a watch point rather than lifeguards from 4 July to 26 August 2026, 13:00-19:00. Beginners do fine here with a school in moderate conditions; alone, treat it as intermediate for the shorebreak and the tide.
Getting on the water
Sandy beach launch at La Daviere; the marked kitesurf practice zone runs 500 m along the beach starting 100 m east of the Chemin de la Daviere access, buoyed and open sunrise-19:00 daily through the last Saturday of August. Access is through forest/dune paths from a parking area set back from the beach.
If it goes wrong
No dedicated kite rescue. A watch point ('vigie'), not a staffed lifeguard post, operates at La Daviere from 4 July to 26 August 2026, 13:00-19:00; supervised bathing with lifeguards is on other beaches in the town. Trouble on the water is a call to the CROSS: 196 from a phone, VHF channel 16.
Room to rig
Wide at low water, with a large hard-sand area to rig, launch and land on. It shrinks through the flood, and on large coefficients the high-water beach is reduced to a sliver.
Rules and access
2026: Saint-Jean-de-Monts arrêté n°2026_477A (19 May 2026) sets a marked kitesurf/kite-foil practice zone ('aire d'évolution kite-surf') at La Daviere, 500 m wide, starting 100 m east of the Chemin de la Daviere (WGS84 approx. N46 47.918 W2 06.491 to N46 47.765 W2 06.174); kite practice is authorised there from sunrise to 19:00 daily, through the last Saturday of August, once the seasonal buoys are in place. The companion beach-use order n°2026_688A (24 July 2026) confirms kitesurf/kite-foil is governed by this nautical-activities order and that other beach users keep priority; it also reserves the southern part of the same Daviere kite zone for occasional char-a-voile/land-sailing lessons run by the town's water-sports base. Outside the marked season the buoyed zoning is not in place and general beach rules apply.
