   Palombaggia is the postcard beach of Porto-Vecchio, about 10-12 km south-east of town on the south-east coast of Corsica, facing the Cerbicale Islands: white sand, red granite, umbrella pines, clear water, flat to choppy over sandbanks.

   Golfo di Sogno is the flat-water corner at the northern end of the bay of Porto-Vecchio: a sandy launch beside a family campsite, with Benedettu, north of the inlet, the sector most people rig from.

1. People sleep in Porto-Vecchio and ride somewhere else. Every thread that asks where to kite in Corsica comes back with the same list — Piantarella, La Tonnara, Figari, Ventilegne, Balistra — all of them on the Bonifacio side, twenty to forty minutes down the road. One rider who spent a full high season based in the town named the three beaches he actually used and none of them was in the gulf.

2. Balistra is the answer people give when there are kids in the car. There is a lagoon behind the beach that works when the wind is offshore and shelters the family, with open sea a few metres away for whoever wants it, and a belt of campsites five to ten minutes off. Two catches: the access is a dirt track off the Bonifacio road, and by June the sunloungers are already out.

3. The reason for the driving is that the beaches nearest the town shut to kites in high season, and riders have been planning around it for twenty years. Riders still ask first which spots are not prohibited in summer; the answer is that the others are banned when the tourists arrive. Pinarellu is treated the same way: an off-season bay.

4. Pinarellu is the one bay on this side that riders actually name. It is a closed bay with flat water that comes alive on an east or north-east wind and on the morning thermal; one rider rates it, in an easterly, as good as the famous lagoon down at Bonifacio. Mornings and late afternoons are when it fills in, and it is a light spot — ten to twenty knots, not a strong-wind day out.

5. Golfo di Sogno is the exception inside the gulf — one rider calls it flatly his best spot on the island. The trade-off is spelled out in the community entry: the wind is rarely strong, but in summer you can get out more than twenty days a month on flat shallow water, and the hazards are swimmers, boats and holidaymakers rather than anything in the water. Parking is a strip of roadside above the beach.

6. Porto-Vecchio itself divides people. A boardsports thread doing the whole island puts it plainly — Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio are a bit see-and-be-seen, and the Balagne in the north is quieter with bigger landscapes. Nobody argues that the gulf is unpleasant, only that the town is the busy, expensive end of the island.
