The spot

Location & winds

Balistra is an east-facing beach about 10 km north of Bonifacio, at the top of the Golfe de Sant'Amanza, and the wind that made its name is the wrong one for going out alone. West, the Libeccio, is the dominant wind; it often accelerates over the land, leaves the sea flat, and blows dead offshore, so ride it with a boat behind you or not at all.

East and NE, the Levante, come in from open water with freeride chop and the odd small wave, which is the day for an independent rider; keep clear of the Capu Biancu cliffs on the right, which throw a big wind shadow.

Beach & parking

The beach is huge and sandy with free parking by the sand, paid for with roughly 2 km of potholed dirt track.

Summer swimmers

From about 1 July to 15 September the shore is a supervised swimming beach and the bathers own the water's edge.

Protected landscape

Behind it is the Étang de Balistra, a protected lagoon of about 100 hectares whose dune cordon is already worn down by too many feet; stay off the vegetation and the wetland margins.

Season is May to October on paper; which months Balistra itself delivers, as opposed to the wider Bonifacio area, is unconfirmed.

The sea in front of the beach is not standing depth, which is why lessons out there run with a boat alongside. The shallow lagoon behind the beach is standing depth throughout and is where beginners are put, but it is a protected wetland with a worn dune cordon, so ask the school on the beach first.How much teaching actually happens in the lagoon rather than in open water is described differently in different places.

The school on the beach runs a support boat that collects riders and ferries them back upwind, with radio contact to the instructor, and sells supervised sessions to riders on their own gear. Nothing covers an independent rider outside its hours, and the summer lifeguards watch the bathing area, not kiters offshore.

Sea emergency in France is 196 from a mobile and VHF channel 16 on the water, answered by CROSS, with 112 from the beach.

Launch

Big sandy beach, around 800 m of it, with free parking close to the sand, an accessible ramp, a paillotte in season and a water-sports school on site; the way in is a long dirt track with potholes and bumps.A beach volleyball net goes up from mid-June to the end of September. In summer the beach is supervised for swimming and full of bathers, so pick your launch spot with care.

2026: Plage de Balistra is a non-smoking beach inside the Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve; follow the posted signs and carry all waste out. Dogs are allowed.

Lifeguards cover the bathing area roughly 1 July to 15 September, from late morning to late afternoon, with the exact dates and hours fixed by municipal arrete each year; the school on the beach gives those hours as 11:00 to 18:00.

No kite permit, kite corridor or seasonal kite ban for Balistra has been found for 2026.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Read the Balistra forecast alongside the Cap Pertusato and Figari stations; there are no published statistics for the beach itself.
Treat a west day as a boat-supported session: the water is flat but it is offshore, and self-rescue means drifting out.
In July and August rig and launch away from the bathers and do not ride along the swimming beach; lifeguards are on from about 1 July to 15 September.
Take the final dirt track slowly; it is roughly 2 km of holes and bumps.
