Baie de Figari is a thermal bay in south-west Corsica, 10 minutes from Figari airport and just past Pianottoli-Caldarello. The wind is an afternoon thermal that a Libecciu or Mistral day tops up; it fills in early afternoon, May to September, with June-August the safest bet, and tide is not a factor. ENE, E, SW, WSW or W all work.
Inside the bay the water is flat to a light chop, with small waves farther out when it blows SW. Standing depth is disputed: either you have foot almost everywhere or only knee-deep at the edges, depending on who you ask, so check before you send a beginner out alone.
Eole runs the lessons and the rental (kite, windsurf, wingfoil) from the beach, and rental for riders on their own is only offered outside July and August. The gusts sit in the first stretch off the sand and a NE day is dirtier still; the wind cleans up once you are out.
Getting there is a long potholed track past Port de Figari to a last parking area, and once on the beach there are rocks, sharp broken bushes and summer bathers to keep clear of.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

bay

Standing depth

Fine sand on a gentle slope, with a long stretch off the beach where you have foot. This is disputed: you may instead find it knee-deep only at the edges and out of your depth everywhere else, so check before sending a beginner out alone.

Tides

Tide is not a factor here.

Temperature

24.6°C summer · 13.6°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts, a rash vest or a shorty in summer depending on the wind chill; a full suit outside summer, and a 4/3 mm with boots in the coldest weeks.

14–26°C water
Large protected southwest Corsica bay with flat to choppy water; small waves can appear farther out, especially in SW wind.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Schools teach from first lesson up to confirmed riders, and the flat inside of the bay suits that. Listings disagree on the level, beginner in some and intermediate/expert in others, which mostly reflects the gusts by the beach and the offshore exposure outside the bay.

Rescue

VHF channel 16

No public rescue boat on the bay. The school on the beach runs a boat that collects riders and drops them back upwind, and sells supervised sessions to people riding their own gear.
Outside its hours there is nothing local: the sea emergency number in France is 196 from a mobile and VHF channel 16 on the water, answered by CROSS, with 112 from the beach.

Launch

From the main road at Pianottoli-Caldarello, turn toward Port de Figari and follow the long track to its end and the last parking area; from there a footpath by a wooden barrier leads onto the beach. The launch runs along the edge of the parking on fine sand with a gentle slope into the water. The first 100-200 m off the sand is the gusty part; the wind cleans up beyond that.

Rules & access
2026: kite rental is for riders who already ride on their own, and it is not offered in July or August; anything run by the school requires an FFV licence at 14.50 EUR a year. Riding zones are marked on the spot and bathing areas are roped off in summer, but no municipal arrete text setting them has turned up. Vehicles are reportedly not allowed in the parking after 20h.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Drive the access track slowly; it is potholed the whole way past Port de Figari to the last parking area.
  • Plan an early-afternoon start; the thermal does not fill in before then.
  • Get away from the beach as soon as you are up: the gusts live in the first stretch off the sand, and a NE day is worse.
  • Ask Eole Figari about the summer zones before an independent session in July or August; rental for independent riders is only offered outside those two months anyway.
  • Move the car before 20h; a parking restriction after that hour has been reported.
  • Bring a 4/3 with boots for the cold months; summer is boardshorts or a shorty.
  • Get away from the beach as soon as you are up: the gusts live in the first 100-200 m off the sand, and a NE day is worse.
  • In the fire season, water bombers scoop out of this bay. Get off the water if one starts running.
  • Save 196 in your phone before you go out: that is the sea emergency number, VHF 16 on the water.
