On the clock

10:00 · 14:00 · 18:00 · 20:00

Flat overnight, building from about 10:00, strongest between 14:00 and 18:00, easing off after 20:00. The daily swing is worth roughly three knots in summer. Indicative, from a reanalysis diurnal cycle rather than a local measurement.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Pont de Ventilègne is the small enclosed bay just north of Bonifacio where the road bridge crosses the water, and it is where the local schools teach. West-sector Libecciu comes into the bay and the enclosed shape kills the chop; you can stand in most of it, and much of it is very shallow.
That is why it is the Bonifacio beginner spot, and also why the schools use it for flat-water freestyle and wakestyle, so do not assume the rider next to you is learning. The beaches at the bridge are easy to park at and used almost exclusively by kitesurfers and windsurfers.
Downwind of the launch is the road; the sides of the pass are rock; outside the bay the westerly is a much stronger wind. The whole bay sits inside the Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve, so the posted signs are not decoration.
June, July and September are the months to come; August has wind too, but the island's beach traffic is at its peak. Nobody has confirmed a rescue boat for independent riders, and no municipal kite arrêté has turned up.

Typical strength

Indicative, from a coastal reanalysis grid cell rather than a beach station. Through June to September about a fifth to a quarter of hours reach 12 kn and roughly one in ten reaches 15 kn. The windier half of the year is November to March: 12 kn or more covers a third to two fifths of hours, 18 kn or more about one hour in eight, and mean gusts run 19-20 kn. Outside the bay the same westerly is a stronger wind than what you feel inside.

Regular in west-sector Libecciu when the spot is working, with flatter water inside the enclosed bay.
Rideable year-round around Bonifacio. June, July and September are the warm months with wind to aim for; August has wind too, but the island's beach traffic is at its peak.

The quiver, in words

No local rider reports were found, so these are derived from the wind range rather than measured. A 75-85 kg rider is on 11-12 m at 15-18 kn, 9-10 m at 18-22 kn, and 8 m or under when a winter Libecciu goes past 25 kn.Size down for outside the bay, where the westerly is stronger than the reading you take on the sand.

Direction to shore

West-sector wind comes into the enclosed bay; this is the regular west-wind beginner option around Bonifacio.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

You can stand easily over much of the closed bay, and the inner end is very shallow. Depth accounts disagree - the same water is elsewhere called only moderately deep - so wade it before you commit to a spot you would not want to swim out of.

Temperature

24.6°C summer · 13.6°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorty or rash vest in the warm season; full suit outside summer, 4/3 mm plus boots in the coldest months. The temperature figures are for Figari/Bonifacio water, not the bay itself.

Currents

No current and no waves inside the closed bay. Outside it, the westerly and the open water are a different proposition.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Supervised, this is the Bonifacio learning spot. The same flat water gets used for freestyle and wakestyle, so advanced riders are here too; that does not make it a place to learn unsupervised.

Rescue

VHF channel 16

No lifeguard, rescue boat or first-aid post is listed for the two Ventilegne beaches; they are classed as wild beaches, with free parking and nothing else on site. Sea rescue is VHF channel 16 or 196 by phone. The access is not usable by anyone with reduced mobility.

Launch

Launch from either of the two beaches at the road bridge over the bay, 7 km north of Bonifacio on the RT40. Parking is free and easy. The sand is used almost exclusively by kitesurfers and windsurfers, all year round. Downwind of the launch is the road, and the sides of the pass are rock.

Rules & access
2026: Ventilegne sits inside the Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve and the beach is listed under Natura 2000. Respect the posted signs and carry your rubbish out. No spot-specific municipal kitesurf order has been found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Take your first sessions with Corsica Kiteboarding or Ecole Kitesurf Corse; the launch is tight and the water very shallow.
  • In stronger west wind, expect the freestyle and wakestyle crowd on the flattest water; give them a lane.
  • Read the reserve signs at the bridge before rigging; the bay is inside the Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve.
  • Stay inside the bay unless you have ridden strong Libecciu before; outside it the westerly is a different wind.
  • Free parking at the bridge, and nothing else. No post, no water, no shade, nobody watching the bay.
  • Wind builds from mid-morning and peaks between 14:00 and 18:00, so an early arrival buys you rigging space, not wind.
