When it fills in

No daily clock. The west-sector flow is synoptic, so it can be in at dawn, hold through the night and run for days; you ride the forecast rather than wait for a thermal to fill in. No local onset pattern has been documented.

Lozari is a big open sand beach on the Balagne coast near Belgodère and Palasca, east of L'Île-Rousse, and the wind that matters is the Libecciu from the west: side-on to side-shore on the north-west-facing sand, 20-26 knots on a working day with a published average of 26.1 knots.
It is not a flat spot: west wind builds chop and easy waves, and once a westerly has been established for a while some swell comes in and launching through it gets dangerous. The bottom drops away close to shore, or at least riders lose their footing fast; whether you can stand at all is unresolved.
That, plus no school, no rescue and no one to ask, is why it is an autonomous-rider spot: intermediate and up, and you ride with a partner. Season is November-April.
Summer is a question mark: kiting is reportedly forbidden then because of the bathers, yet the beach is also listed as open all year, and no 2026 municipal order settling the dates has been found, so read the signs at the car park before you rig.
Park at the center or south car parks off the main road, where there is more room and fewer people.

The quiver, in words

Indicative rather than local, because no Lozari quiver has been published anywhere. On the 20-26 knots the spot is known for, a 75-85 kg rider is on 7-9 m; keep a 5-6 m for the days the west sector overdelivers and a 10-12 m for the light end.

Direction to shore

W is described as side-on or side-shore on the northwest-oriented beach.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Unresolved and best treated as deep. One condition table claims foot-depth at both high and low water, while the same page warns that you lose your footing fast, with a specific caution for beginners riding without a leash. Assume you cannot stand where a problem would find you.

Tides

Small Mediterranean range, about 0.4-0.7 m, and the water level barely moves. The water state stays much the same through the day, a little choppier at low water when the wind is strong.

Temperature

24°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts or light neoprene in peak summer depending on air temperature; full suit in shoulder season and thicker winter suit when water is near 13 C.

Currents

No measured current data. An open beach in west wind and swell makes for difficult water close in; the Balagne coast has had bathing bans for wind and swell, which tells you what the nearshore does in big weather.

14–27°C water
Long open sandy beach with chop and easy waves in west wind: a large open water area, some swell after established west wind, and a more exposed feel than Calvi bay.

Rescue

VHF channel 16

Nothing kite-specific. The beach is supervised during the bathing season and a seasonal nautical centre on the sand hires SUP, kayak and windsurf gear; neither is a kite rescue, and out of season there is nobody at all. Ride with a partner and keep a self-rescue margin.
The French sea and coastal emergency number is 196, and VHF channel 16 reaches the same watch.

Launch

Straight off the sand. The center and south sectors have the most room and the fewest people, with large car parks off the main road. A separate access means a walk and a wooden footbridge over the river before you reach the sand, so most visiting riders use the center or south car parks.

Hazards riders report 9

  • summer kite ban reported
  • waves in strong west wind
  • deep water close to shore
  • bathers in season
  • Kitesurfing is reported forbidden in summer because of numerous bathers.
  • Waves can become large and make launching dangerous in strong west wind.
  • Riders may lose footing quickly close to shore.
  • Open beach with chop and swell in established west wind.
  • Access and parking are easy by road, but beach-user conflict is likely in peak season.
Rules & access
2026: the rules conflict and no municipal order has been found. Kitesurfing is reportedly forbidden in summer because of the number of bathers; the spot is elsewhere given as open all year; and a kitesurf zone appears among the beach's activities alongside supervised bathing in season. Read the posted signs at the car park before rigging, and treat July and August as restricted until the posted rules allow it.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Park at the center or south car parks off the main road and rig there: more room, fewer people, and no river to cross.
  • Look at the sea before you commit on a strong west day; once the swell is up, launching through the waves is the dangerous part.
  • Do not assume summer riding is allowed: kiting is reportedly banned in the bathing season and the 2026 dates are unconfirmed, so read the posted rules at the beach.
  • Ride with a partner and keep a self-rescue margin; there is no kite rescue and the seasonal nautical centre is not one.
  • Expect to lose your footing close to shore; do not count on standing depth to sort out a problem.
  • For bigger waves drive to Algajola; for a more sheltered bay, Calvi.
  • Pack for 20-26 knots; nobody has published a local quiver for Lozari.
  • Put 196 in your phone before the session. It is the French sea rescue number and out of season nobody is watching this beach.

Getting there

Calvi Sainte-Catherine Airport (CLY)

Route

Drive east from Calvi or L'Île-Rousse toward Belgodère and Lozari and use the signed center or south car parks off the main road. L'Île-Rousse is about 24 km and 30 minutes from Calvi airport; Lozari is a little further east, so with kite gear a car is the only real option.

Staying

Lozari or Belgodère for the shortest drive to the sand; L'Île-Rousse is the nearest town with proper services; Calvi if you want to stay near the airport.

No-wind days

SUP, kayak or a sail with the seasonal Losari nautical centre; L'Île-Rousse and the Pietra; the Balagne hill villages; a beach day; the coast paths and inland hikes.

FAQ

Is Plage de Lozari suitable for beginners?

No; sources call it an autonomous-rider spot rated intermediate, since the beach is open, wave-affected and can lose standing depth quickly close to shore.

What is the wind like?

The main working wind is west, described as side-on or side-shore, producing chop and easy waves as it strengthens, with one dataset averaging around 26 knots.

When is the best time to visit?

November through April is the highlighted season for reliable west wind.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

Sources disagree: one says kitesurfing is forbidden in summer because of numerous bathers, while another lists the spot as open all year, and the exact current municipal basis is unverified.
