Algajola - Aregno is the long sandy Plage d'Aregno between Calvi and L'Île-Rousse, and in the Balagne it is the wave beach, not the learning one.
W/SW and NE are the wave directions; the Libecciu from the west is the main setup, side-on to side-shore on this west-facing beach, and a strong NW Mistral goes onshore and messy, at which point Calvi is the better bet. The shorebreak is big.
There are rocks toward the north end and around the launches, no kite school anywhere in the Balagne, and one report of current pulling offshore in big weather. The listed window is November-April, though the spot is open all year; in July-August the sand belongs to bathers, restaurants and private beaches, with lifeguards on duty and little room to launch.
Swell takes a few days of strong wind to fill in, so check the wind history, not just tomorrow's forecast. No official 2026 municipal kite ban or corridor has turned up.

fills in: Summer sessions, when they happen, are mainly afternoon thermal; unconfirmed beyond one account.

Typical strength

No wind station on this beach. A spot average of 24.5 knots circulates for Algajola, while the long record at Calvi airport 15 km away gives an annual mean of 8 knots with mean gusts of 23 over 2000-2026, so treat 24.5 as what a session day looks like rather than a normal day. The riding days are the ones with Libecciu established. In summer the beach is reckoned sailable roughly one to three days a week, mostly on the afternoon thermal.

Powerful and technical when swell is running; good for wave riding but not a forgiving teaching spot.
November-April is one listed window. The spot is open all year but should be avoided in July-August because of tourist crowds.

The quiver, in words

Indicative for 75-85 kg; no local quiver is published. An established Libecciu at 20-30 knots is 7-9 m. The summer afternoon thermal is nearer 11-12 m. Packing for both is the awkward part of a trip here.

Direction to shore

W/SW described as side-on or side-shore on the west-oriented beach; strong NW Mistral can become onshore and choppy.

Dominant direction

W/SW and NE for waves; W (Libecciu) is the main setup.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

sea

Standing depth

Foot-depth water near shore at both high and low tide has been reported, but this is a wave beach with a big shorebreak and there is no depth survey.

Tides

Small Mediterranean tide, and it is not what you plan around. Flatter water at low tide and choppier at high has been reported. Wind, swell and shorebreak decide the session.

Temperature

24°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer can be ridden light or in shorts on warm days; use a full suit in spring/autumn and a thicker winter suit when water is near 13 C.

Currents

No measured current data. A strong offshore pull in big conditions has been reported, and in August 2023 bathing was banned at the Aregno and Algajola beaches because of dangerous swell, current and violent wind.

14–27°C water
Open sandy Balagne beach that becomes a wave/shorebreak venue in established W/SW or NE wind and swell. The sea can be calm or become surfable when Libecciu rises.

Rescue

Lifeguarded as a bathing beach in summer only. No kite-specific rescue, no club boat, and nothing at all out of season, which is when the wave days come. Bathing has been closed here before in dangerous swell and wind, most recently in August 2023.

Launch

Launch off the sand of Plage d'Aregno, best from the centre of the beach facing the channel or from the quieter north end, and always downwind of the rocks that outcrop toward Aregno. The beach runs about 1.4 km of fine sand and at least 80 m wide, chapel on one side, mountains behind.Parking is strung along the beach road that leaves the N2197 at the edge of Algajola and follows the sand and the railway. The citadel end is the busy one; the north end is quieter, with small dunes.

Space

Wide off season. In summer the citadel end fills with private beaches, restaurants and bathers, the beach is lifeguarded, and the usable room shrinks toward the quieter north end.

Hazards riders report 9

  • strong wind
  • waves
  • technical conditions
  • Large shorebreak and technical wave conditions.
  • Strong wind and gusty/rough sea in established Libecciu or Mistral.
  • Rocks near launch areas; guidance advises launching downwind of rocks.
  • Tourist crowds and bathers in July-August.
  • Potential offshore-drift current in big weather, reported.
  • Rocks toward the north/Aregno end are noted.
Rules & access
2026: open all year; no municipal kite ban, corridor, permit or seasonal restriction for Algajola or Aregno has been found. The beach is supervised as a bathing beach in summer and carries private beach concessions, restaurants and a nautical centre, so July-August the sand is effectively spoken for. Closures do happen on this coast: in August 2023 bathing was banned at the Aregno and Algajola beaches because of dangerous swell, current and violent wind.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Launch from the centre of the beach facing the channel, and downwind of the rocks.
  • If you are not used to launching through shorebreak, wait for a smaller, cleaner day; this is a wave spot first.
  • Skip July-August: bathers, private beaches and no kite corridor, unless the sand is clearly empty.
  • Check the wind history as well as the forecast; the swell only fills in after several days of strong wind.
  • In a strong NW Mistral, Algajola goes onshore and rough; compare with Calvi, which can be the better call in strong Mistral.
  • Park on the beach road along Plage d'Aregno; it is about 15 minutes from Calvi airport.
  • The north end toward Aregno is the quieter half of the beach in season, but it is also where the rocks are, so scout it on foot first.
  • Do not plan a summer trip around this spot alone: the sailable count in summer is about one to three days a week.
